What is the Paul Gilbert lick NOT teaching you?!? Paul introduced us to his favorite alternate picking lick back on his OG Hot Licks video, and he has since disavowed it as being the be all end all alternate picking workout. It's a great outside picking exercise, but there's a lot it DOESN'T show us if you want to become an alternate picking PRO!
In this video, I'm going to show you variations on the PG lick that will get you inside picking, outside picking, and crushing the game while learning the fretboard MORE BETTER! It's a smashing little etude that's gonna turn you into SHREDDY KREUGER!

I met Paul at a clinic once , he gave out a hand drawn lesson on A pentatonic minor and said 'If your teacher hasn't shown you the pentatonic minor get a new one"
I'll have to learn that someday.
I’d say no need for a specific key, start with major, learn the intervals, then you’ll automatically learn the natural minor since it’s relative to major, then you’ll know minor and major pentatonic. It’s all connected :)

Hmm... didn't even know that was a Paul Gilbert lick, but I have played a variation before as fun practice exercise starting out. I just knew it as that cool intro lick from Annihilator's Alison Hell.

Excellent variations! Whenever I get a new student, they'll very often already be practicing this maneuver. I have to explain to them that the pickslanting challenges are insane, and that even though it seems simple, it really isn't. There was a video (somewhere) where PG himself admits that this maneuver is disastrous for beginners

Great lesson, Mr. Ben. I've always struggled with the classic 'Gilbert lick' outside picking mechanic. BTW - I saw you play with Mr. Andy last week at the Dallas show, very cool! I talked to Andy and he said you engineer all his records. Didn't know that. Was going to say howdy to you too but you had quite the crowd around you. Guess that happens with almost half a million subscribers!

IDK if i like to even want to start thinking about this, ive allways just let the inside or outside pick thing just happen automaticlly via whatever the path of least resistance happens to be, an extra thing to be self concious about is another oppertunity for me to choke.

Alright, this has gotten downright weird. This must be at least the 3rd or 4th time this year alone. That the Weekend Wankshop topic is almost exactly what I've been working on. Get'n the vibes out there one way or another? Uncle Ben has hit paydirt repeatedly now. I dig the simple approach that focuses on the basics that rarely get talked about. All these fundamental skills are guaranteed to get you more money and chicks.

I like the variations on this lesson, I love pattern permutations like these. I honestly think the lesson would have benefited from a close up view of when the target pick escales are. Nice nonetheless! Edit - to make it more PG like would be good to get rhytm variations too, you know moving from steaight 8th notes to 16ths to some tuplet
It's funny that this became The Paul Gilbert Lick. I heard DiMeola play it a decade earlier and it's almost guaranteed that's where Paul heard it.

What the Paul Gilbert lick DOESNT teach you is that in order to master this technique (as well as many others in this style), you must first acquire a Gibson 2024 emerald green SG. A secret only the coolest guitar players know.

I'll stick with my Alpine White 74 Gibson Les Paul Custom .it's the only gutair I've ever played .and it was my favorite guitarist go to 🪓 .doubt I have to tell anyone who played the exact guitar . color .year . and Python Snakeskin Strap lol but yeah the SG is sick

As a young shredder, i practiced that PG lick constantly, since the day that REH video came out.
I could NEVER play it up to speed, despite starting slow and working my way up.
I hit a speed barrier, i could never clear, no matter how much i practiced.
It was incredibly frustrating, although i ended up mastering the "Legato section" of the vid.

Idea for another more better Uncle Ben video: "What the Ritchie Blackmore arpeggio isn't teaching you?" Context: Is there a way to pick that part, which starts with 567s on GBA strings in Rainbow's "Man on the silver mountain". It seems nobody covered it online how to pull that off with a pick without arpeggiating as Ritchie Blackmore does. It seems impossible for me in 100 years to pull that off with the actual rhythm 😅

Hi, Uncle Ben! The Paul Gilbert lick has troubled me with pickslanting for a very long time (i.e., changing the pick angle when hitting a new string for a one single note, and then coming back to the previous string, like at 5:47). Can you elaborate on how best to practice this with pickslanting? Are you changing the pick angle at all when hitting the new string for a single note, and then coming back to the previous?
Love the color of that Shaktor but cannot dig that headstock.... Unless I needed to pierce through some chainmail or something
Ben, can you drop a comment about whether you incorprated two-way pick slanting with this as opposed to just letting your picking angle develop naturally based on ensuring the licks are played cleanly and in time? Cheers.

What the "other" Paul Gilbert lick? He plays it as much as he does this one. I've found a few people trying to teach it, but i cant understand it. We've all heard it. He usually plays it in A pentatonic, 5th fret "box", but does elsewhere also.
why dont go from the last not on the string.down stroke, down to the next string (economy Picking)
I played it a few times and already a bunch of chicks showed up. What can you recommend for feeding these chicks until they're big enough to fry and eat for dinner? Also, can you explain how to tell the roosters from the hens?
Let them things wander out in the yard and feast on bugs and whatnot, you’ll get the best eggs that way!

Hey Ben, been a fan for many years now, would love it if you could take the time to read this one, I’m a 21 year old from Queensland Australia, I’ve been battling an ongoing eye condition stemming from a skin disease I got when I was 8, it had left me in a coma for some time and it’s left me going blind, as of November last year that’s when my eyes got worse, i ended up homeless for some time there, at an attempt to get big enough to maybe go overseas and get my eyes treated by a world class specialist I’ve started a CZcams and TikTok channel teaching guitar I know you have a huge audience and would appreciate it to the moon if you could help us out, if not even just some advice to help me improve I’d appreciate it so much and keep it up!

That’s correct, according to the data.
Back in the day when I bought the VHS tape, I wound up overdeveloping my outside picking, thanks to Paul. Can concur, got the chick, but not much money.

Paul was my next door neighbor in 1988 in Hollywood at 6711 Yucca . Then he lived next to me in Vegas. I know his ex Patricia, russ parrish , etc etc . Blah blah . If it wasn't for to be with you mr big and blowing up with mr big in japan , he would be broke, just like Juno and more than words , because shred guitar doesn't pay bills , and the audience is a sausage fest . Play like angus and make money ang get chicks. Shredding is a waste of time
