Thank you so much! I have been trying to understand the dang "Y-Wing" forever. I have no problem solving puzzles until I get to this point. I could never quite figure out which blocks were eligible for elimination. The "roof" concept of the trapezius cleared it up beautifully. This is singularly the best and simplest explanation I've gotten. Thank you so much for your videos!
HI Hilary. I cover the Y wing and XY wing later in a tutorial
Before I viewed Sudoku Guy, I never tried doing the daily puzzles in my newspaper. Now, I watch for them, clip them and print 4 to a page so that the answers follow the previous puzzle. I am sure to date them to keep them in order. This way, I can work the puzzles as I find time, and I have the answers if I am not sure. Sudoku Guy got me started doing the puzzles. I never thought I could do them, and I am getting better and better, trying more advanced lessons, and frequently repeating them. Sudoku Guy, you proved that a person can do Sudoku, even if
challenged, like me.

I wish to thank Sheuy 187 as he explains the skyscraper very well. He points out what is not a skyscraper as well as shows that a skyscraper will have 4 cells, each in a different block.
Poseidon99Jeus Well buddy a lot of people learn better with repetition which is also known as emphasis of an important point that the teacher is making. Anyone that has used instructional techniques in their lives would recognize that. Your offensive criticism isn't constructive.
Robin your videos are awesome and I successfully used the skyscraper technique that you taught in this video to solve puzzles.
I am very grateful for all of your videos they have really helped me get past the " what do I do now moment" that you reach in a puzzle..

I've come back go this video so many times now. I can spot skyscrapers but always screw up their usage. Not sure why it's taking this one so long to sink in for me. You explain it quite clearly.
Hang in there. Some of the advanced patterns take time to spot. the more you do them the easier it becomes.
Oh my god. The X Wing, Skyscraper lessons are the advanced techniques I’m looking for. I’m very familiar with the TMB LCR techniques. However, I always struggle when I do the difficult puzzles simply because I’m not aware of these advanced techniques.
Thanks for explaining. I’ll keep watching other lessons/tutorials and look for advanced techniques like these. Thank you 😊

Thank you so much! i cover the skyscraper in more detail in tutorial #75. I think you will find this even more helpful
This is very helpful! I don't understand the cleaver much but the rest I can use.
Glad it was helpful! I suggest you look at the section on the cleaver again and eventually using TMB it will make sense
Of all the sites I have looked at to help me with sudoku, you are the very VERY best!! I love the way u go thru the puzzles. Is there any chance of u doing a lesson on both wxyz wings and AIC as I am so stuck on those!!! Thank u so much for your videos!!!!!
thankx...please tell your friends!

I took that challenge and decided to see if I could find the alternative solution. One thing that I noticed is that the second row from the bottom has only one spot where you can fit a 1.
I'm not sure if that solves the entire puzzle, but it looks like it helps quite a bit.
Go ahead and tell me if you can solve it. There is often more than one path to take in order to solve. Sometimes just one new number will enable you to solve the puzzle.
How can I take that challenge ? From where to get that same puzzle?
Thanks for the explanation! Also found this to be called a Sashimi X-Wing.
Very cool! Yes you are right.

Skyscraper starts at 8:31
Good Point for those who don't want to revise.
Hi Sudoku Guy & thank you for helpful videos. I was wondering *why* this 'Skyscraper' pattern works though - what's the numerical / mathematical basis behind it? I think this would help me use it in practice. Thanks
I have no ideaHI David. It involves strong links firstly and the ability to "See'" I suggest you look at tutorial # 75 and I hope this helps. Sky scraper are not as common as X wings.
may you please help me to understand sashimi x wing pattern
Another name for the sashimi X wing is the skyscraper. I explain this in lesson 22 second half. You can also see this explained by going to Shuey 187 on youtube.
See lesson 22 comments.
Does the skyscraper technique only work if the 'rooftops' are of similar height?
+KiM O. The sky scraper usually take up 4 blocks, and the roof tips are always at an angle. ie they are not the same height.
Ah ok. I think my sky scrapers have been too close to each other (i.e. only takes up 3 blocks) or too small (i.e. one 'tower' takes up 3 squares in one block) so the technique hasn't been working for me. I'll keep practicing. PS: Well done and thanks for such great vids. Your pace is perfect and explanations are the best on CZcams.
The rows of the roof have to be different rows within the same 'tier'. A tier is a bundle of three adjacent rows, that together cover 3 blocks, so row 1,2,3 or row 4,5,6 or row 7,8,9 form tiers.
Same idea for columns.
Nice
Thanks
@@SudokuGuy 💐👍
The roof of skysraper not necessarily have to be in a difference of one row or column-right?
Yes good question Mandira
I’m stuck on a tricky puzzle. I’ve been trying to use a swordfish pattern or a skyscraper. I found a skyscraper pattern but it didn’t eliminate anything. I might have to use a logic chain
Try looking for a chain of pairs an Xwing or a skyscraper.
@@SudokuGuy I ended up figuring it out with some help on Reddit, what it needed was an x wing, and that opened up a w wing. With that I was able to crack the sudoku.
That makes you feel good doesn't it?
@@SudokuGuy Yeah, I got to learn and apply a new technique. That's always exciting. A w-wing is basically a chain of pairs, so you were exactly right with your advice
Everything has been ok until I got to the skyscraper. I will go over it again
Hi Bro. yes the skyscraper is tricky. Watch my upload in july. I explain "seeing" again when doing the W wing.
So to summarize the concept 'to see': two cells see each other if they are in the same row, the same column, or the same block.
Yes
I may have misunderstood something. Have a puzzle with 4-8 in middle row of TR, 4-8 in bottom row of MC. According to what I may have misunderstood, BL should also have 4-8 or 8-4 in the top row, but it's impossible in any of the rows in BL. Had this scenario before. What have I misunderstood?
Hello Castello I am so sorry I do not know what you mean TR MC BL You are the first person to mention this.
@@SudokuGuy Ha ha, I'm using your terminology. TR = Top Right, MC = Middle Centre, and BL = Bottom Left. Thank you for responding.
Great technique. However, is "skyscraper" really needed to solve the particular puzzle used in lesson 22? I think not because in row 8, second from the bottom, there is only one "1" therefore the 1 must go in that cell, squarely in the middle of the lower right hand corner block. Everything flows readily from that point. Just curious.
Thank you David for your comment. Yes your discovery is excellent, however i wanted to sow the skyscraper pattern as it becomes very important when solving very difficult puzzles, and sometimes the skyscraper using X chains will be the breakthough to get to the end of the puzzle. Yes in this lesson it would be possible to solve the puzzle without spotting the skyscraper. I have found that often a clue can be missed as well. It's all part of solving sudoku .My tutorial schedule has a more detailed skyscraper coming soon
@@SudokuGuy - thanks. I definitely need to review most of the higher level tutorials!
The roof have has to be in the same block level, correct?
Yes Watch my tutorial in August which explains in more detail to "see' concetp. If you wish to solve more advanced puzzles this is valuable. Have fun and stay safe!
How do you know the puzzle is correct if you don't check every row, column, & block after finishing?
If you find a number repeated in a row column or block you know the puzzle has not been solved. If there is an answer somehwere (often in the back of a book/magazine) look at that as well. This will show you if you have repeated a number.
hi sudoku guy,
re. the cleaver.
your handle was on the right to add the 5.
can it go on the left? if not, why not?

Does the roof of a skyscraper have to be two rows tall?
Hi David usually 2 rows but sometimes can be 3 rows.

why can't the "5" handle go to the left side of the clever?
Because you LCR wil only work when it's on the right hand side
Because of LCR
At 7.20 mins I'm totally lost as to how fives were put into the two boxes, can anyone explain please?
Hi Joan. I suggest you look at lesson 7. The cross/meet technique is used to locate that 5.
@@SudokuGuy Thank you very much, you're fabulous
The Skyscraper technique is amazing. I can't understand why anyone would let a computer resolve a puzzle for them. What's the point? I guess some people just can't stand an unknown.
I guess is that they don't know the technique they need, and if the computer gives them the answer it does not mean they understan, which means they may not be learning.
13:52 - that's the skyscraper. Why didn't the 46 on the left "see" the 3457 on top right, beside the 345? It's in the same block.
Not sure why anyone would use a software to solve a Sudoku; there's no fun (or pride) doing that. TFS, Nicole
Hi Nicole it is because it is not a 4 of the corner of the building.
@@SudokuGuy Okay, I'm going to check it out again once I finish viewing Tut #1. I'm not sure I understood then.
@@SudokuGuy OK. You do explain that one exactly at 12:52 and on and I had missed it completely. Thank you, Nicole

Hi sudoku guy
Thanks for your tutorials, however your skyscraper in this video is wrong. If try to complete the sudoku with your skyscraper result you actually cannot get the puzzle out. You presumed wrongly there were no other optional "4" in the right hand side wall but there was one more "4" (2,3, 4) that your student had not inputted. This meant that your resulting "6" was wrong and is actually a "2", and your "4" on the left hand wall top is actually a "6." This is not to say that your explanation was not helpful, but just that your student had not set up all the possibilities in the first place correctly; which is a worthwhile warning to others attempting this technique.
thank you for your comment.
Mark can you explain to me what you mean by the mistakes. Do you want to explain to me 2,3 and 4 that the student did not enter? how can you be so sure that the 6 is wrong and there should be 2
Well, you've given rules, but you haven't explained WHY those rules apply.
You will get more why if you look at my latest video tutorial 64.
