Their leader Bang Chan choose and picked the team members by himself. However, they have to undergone the final assessment by JYP before debut. They have their survival showcase. On the other note, they write, compose & produce their own music (mainly by Bang Chan, Chang Bin & Han. Their unit called 3 Racha). Other members also participating in writing and composing the song in this album. Yup! The Muddy Water is LIT!!!

So usually kpop companies hold auditions or scout and then the lucky participants or lucky few that auditioned/were scouted make it they get a phone call stating that they made it. Once that happens they become trainees and train under the company in vocals, rap, dance and choreography, and music (writing and composing + producing). Usually artists will have monthly evaluations in those categories or a competition segment (where all the trainees or handpicked trainees) compete against each other in order for a select few to make the debut team. Depending on the company the debut team will go on to do promotional work and content to spread the name + faces of the group. After, the debut group still has to do monthly evaluations and debut preparations. Just because they make it in the debut team doesn’t mean their safe from eliminations. That’s why it’s so imperative for fans and ppl in general to really understand thee amount of sacrifice and constant effort it takes to become an idol/debut.
In Bangchans case all his members and himself went through that process but what was different is that BANGCHAN IS THE ONLY LEADER TO HAVE CHOSEN HIS MEMBERS HIMSELF THROUGH JYP’s stray kids survival show (y’all can check out the survival show on JYP ent YT channel or stray kids YT channel).
