    Switch your latch to a rotary style latch, it's spring loaded. Southco makes a very nice one. Southco also offers a 12V rotary latch with the pull solenoid already inside the rotary latch as an option as well. The weight of the door does not affect a rotary latches vs a mechanical gate strike-catch style latch like you have.

      Good luck, what I can recommend is look into other options that wire to connect to the push pull solenoid. I've been thinking about carburetor linkage or something similar. Also, I just uploaded a new video. I've switched to a 4g lte security cam. So I habe a live feed to view anytime. I've also partnered with a company that provides prepaid sim cards for the cam. Thier rates are extremely affordable.

    What about adding a pully or two in between the actuator and the release (block and tackle concept). This would give the actuator more pulling power when opening if you can manage the slack in the cable between the two components.

    • @radioace318la
      @radioace318la Před 3 lety

      That's exactly what I was thinking. Leverage is your friend. A slight turn on a steel to steel cable employing a small pully. It would have to be in close proximity to the trigger to obtain the necessary leverage. A 50# pull would be way more than enough power. Even with a return spring. I've seen some in a local hardware store. most of the stuff you find at Home Depot and Lowes is cheap Chinese crap. I have some leftover cable and pullies from a Cessna 150 salvage job just itching to be "repurposed " :) Thanks for the ideas. I'm working on my hog trap as we speak.
      Cheers from Louisiana. BTW, can you use any carriers simm card? AT&T sucks where I need to use it. Verzion works well. I read something a guy used a Tracphone simm.

      Another option if your going to use a gate latch is to weld a 12-18” rod to the latch. Then attach that to actuator. That will provide lever arm to make it must easier to pull.

    Instead of using the actuator to pull a wire, can you mount the actuator where the gate latch is and just have it pull a pin and drop the gate? Or have it connected directly to a latch of some sort. Then just run electrical wires in a small conduit back to control box.

    Tech question- Was looking at same GSM relay you used on Amazon before finding your video. GSM relay says it has 30 amp outputs which should be more than enough to energize the car door actuator on its own correct? Why did you end up using a secondary lawn mower relay between the GSM relay and the actuator? If I understand what you did correctly, you ran a battery to a GSM relay to a lawn mower relay to an actuator- isn't the lawn mower relay redundant since the GSM relay by itself should activate the actuator or am I missing a step?

    • @JSROutdoors
      @JSROutdoors  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I used the lawn mower relay as a extra precaution. I used an actuator for shaved doors with a 100lb pull. It has a pretty big draw.

      I based this off the signal strength in my home and the provider I chose to use for the coverage. Our At&t phones have spotty coverage. The gsm controller has signal and the only cell coverage that works inside our home is Verizon. There is a chance the antenna is pulling AT&T enough to operate, but based off the provider I selected it's Verizon. Thanks for watching! If you haven't subscribed, please do!

    Hi, I've been trying to learn and hopefully get something figured out on my trap. I'm kind of new to all of the workings of electrical stuff, but I've been studying up on it. What size wires do you use to connect into the controller, does it matter if you use 12 gauge on all of it? I saw on another deal where they used 24 ga, just can't really find what is better to use as far as the detailed working of the project. Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

    • @JSROutdoors
      @JSROutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Personally, I used 16 guage for the controller and 12 guage for the solenoids. 16 guage is plenty for the controller and I used the 12 guage because of the amount of power the push pull solenoid draws when it's used. Typically, the rule of thumb is the more Amps it draws a low guage thick wire is better.

      Thanks so much, I really appreciate you getting back with me and your help. I did trial run today and got solenoid and auto relay rigged up on board. Pretty awesome when you get it to work. I used 12 Gauge on all if this. But I'll get 16 for when call box comes in.
