How to Make a Chess/Checker Board Using Epoxy Resin
Technique for the board:
Either via pouring or using a syringe, add colored resin to every other square on the board
Use a skewer to spread resin to fill the square without bleeding into the opposing square
Use opposing colors on the opposite squares and spread as noted above
Allow curing per manufacturer's instructions
Add clear resin to fill the rest of the mold and again cure
Carefully use a torch to remove any bubbles
Demold
I added bumpers on the bottom of the board to raise it slightly
Technique for Gilding:
I decided to guild the edges of the board using gilding glue and gold foil
Tape off the area you do not want to gild
Use a paintbrush to apply the gilding glue
For the brand I used, I had to wait 30 minutes before applying the gold foil
Apply gold foil and use a different paintbrush to remove excess
NOTE: I made a mess doing this so my technique may not be the best and you may wish to look at other people's videos for gilding techniques if you decide to gild the edges
Technique for Chess/Checker pieces:
Add the same color resin used for the board into the chess piece molds
It's very important that you squeeze the molds to ensure the resin fills the mold properly
Use an acrylic paint pen to paint the crowns on the molds (if you want)
Add the same color resin used for the board into the checker piece molds
Move resin around the mold to ensure it fills to reduce bubbles or gaps
Cure per manufacturer instructions and demold
I added felt bumpers to the bottom of each chess piece so they would slide more easily
Enjoy your custom, handmade chess/checkerboard, or give it as a gift to someone deserving of the amount of time and technique this piece takes to complete. 😊

This is gorgeous.
Thank you very much.
Be well.

Finally, a video with step by step instructions, every video I watched today is skipping steps. Could you explain this part: Either via pouring or using a syringe, add colored resin to every other square on the board? --- because not one video explains this.
Hi there! Sure. It means fill one square with just enough resin to lightly coat the square. Be sure to not over pour or it will bleed into the adjacent square. You can use a skewer or cotton swab to push the pigmented resin to the corners of the square. You then repeat the same with an opposing color in the adjacent square and continue until all squares are filled. Does that help? If not, just let me know and I’ll try to explain further. Look @ 0:23 of the video for a demonstration.
So pretty!! What color & brand is the blue pigment you used?
Thank you so much Nicole. I used Eye Candy Nokon Blue. Be well.
Hello 😊 I wish I had watched this before I did mine. How did you find using the syringe? I haven’t yet due to cleaning it. Did you toss it after or clean it and was it horrible to clean if you did? Your board came out beautiful!
Hi Patti. The syringe helped a lot. I did get a bit impatient and tried just pouring and it would bleed, so I called on all my patience to use just the syringe. 😊 I bought a huge box of disposable syringes on Amazon (very inexpensive) and throw them away when I am finished. I realize this may seem wasteful, but I couldn’t imagine trying to clean and reuse a syringe when they aren’t expensive. If you prefer to reuse, I’d suggest emptying the syringe and filling it with rubbing alcohol. I’ve never tried this, but that would be my best guess. Here is a link to the syringe’s I used, in case you’re interested. amzn.to/3jNjrMK
@@HandcraftedbyMichelle Thanks for the reply. It does seem like a nightmare to clean. If I make another I’ll have to figure out an efficient way. I’ll also use a resin that has a longer working time! Thanks again 😊
Hello! Thanks for the awesome video! Did guy use a specific amount of resin for the base of the board ? I hope my question makes sense.
Hi DeShannon. Thank you for the comment and question. I think I understood you correctly. This project (just the board) took 12 ounces of resin. Be well.
Is it hard to get all the squares filled before the resin starts to set? Do you have to do it in stages?
Hello. Very good question. I used ArtResin, which has a good working time (45 minutes roughly); but yes, I did the squares in stages. I did one half with a first batch of resin; then mixed a second batch for the second half.
I know you didn’t ask this, but in case you’re planning to make one … a good piece of information I wish I knew is that as long as you get the bottom part of the square set correctly, any bleed above the square will not show on the top part of the board. 😊
Be well.
Michelle
@@HandcraftedbyMichelle thanks so much! I'm a beginner, so far I've only done a couple of coasters (and one is still flexible for some reason 😅) but I have been looking at a chess set mold on Amazon. I really want it, but I wasn't sure if I should practice with smaller pieces first.
@@HandcraftedbyMichelle Yours came out really pretty by the way! I like the color choice!
@@enicole1203 Thank you so very much!
@@enicole1203 If your resin is flexible, a few reasons why: it hasn’t had enough time to cure; you inadvertently messed up the mix ratio; you didn’t mix the resin correctly. A quick note on that is to make sure you see no silver or lines (however you wish to describe).
You may want to work with something a little less intimidating to start. The chess board can be on the higher end of complexity. I would recommend maybe starting with Dominoes first because they’re not as complicated as the chessboard. Also, make sure you have a good resin. I would recommend ArtResin or for a less expensive option, this resin (smile.amazon.com/dp/B07S1MLQMJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QZ4DGSAM8174K7N3KVQZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1). Best of luck and feel free to reach out if you have questions.
i recommend removing the pads on the pieces and replacing with spray glue and felt.
Good idea Damon. Thank you for the tip. I’ll definitely try that next time!
How do you ship your chess sets?
Hi Lisa! I haven’t shipped one, but would recommend finding a box with a little larger dimensions than the set and wrapping each piece to prevent scratching.
Hello how much Resin did it take to make?
Hi Rene! This project took quite a bit of resin, approximately 10-12oz. Thank you.
