I visited Shifttok and left with more questions than I had originally! Reality shifting is an internet trend that gained popularity back in 2020 when we were forced to stay inside. Other than playing Animal Crossing for 20 hours a day, people were looking for a new form of free escapism. That’s when Tiktok and social media users started posting content claiming they can transport their consciousness to a different world by following shifting methods. Basically, you can travel to fictional realities in real life - like Anime worlds, movie timelines, and even a reality where you’re a billionaire married to Harry Styles. The main topics we’ll talk about are multiple universes, daydreaming, fan fiction, and of course Harry Potter. Gen Z Has Normalized Reality Shifting #edvasian - Zábava

Gen Z has renamed Maladaptive Daydreaming.
fr, I hope most of these people realize what they're doing is actually maladaptive and not helpful for their mental health. normalize therapy instead of trying to jump out of existence to solve ur problems 😀
We had this in the 90s and it wasn't great then, either. Thank you for saying it.
LMAO. Was gonna say schizophrenia xD
I think I had it for most of my life between early teens to mid 20s, but I never had an official diagnostic. I've been doing therapy for a looooooong time already and some other changes in my life had made me have fewer of these daydreams. But I do engage on it sometimes and some - if not most - are BAD THINGS. Why do I daydream about negative things? I have no idea. Is a pile of emotions, traumas, complexes and basically the main points CBT treats. Before therapy, like 15 years ago or so, I would shift (ha!) between totally positive day-dreaming with these negative thoughts.
And them all would consume A LOT of resources from my body - so, yeah, I would be very tired and overwhelmed in general. But since I don't like self-diagnosis I will avoid to labelling what I have as this condition, even if many things fit. What I know is this is NOT cool or good for anyone.
@@monbubthen you go to therapy and they basically tell you to do this kinda thing to destress though lol.
The second hand embarrassment is so strong. I am so greatful tik tok wasn't around when I was a teen. I wouldn't want all my cringe to live on the internet forever .
My question is why even share it? Keep it to yourself for your own amusement. The whole doesn’t need to know all of anyone’s business. We all need a little privacy.

@@merriquelynn866while privacy is necessary, being isolated and enjoying things isn’t always ideal. As someone with PTSD, dissociation, maladaptive daydreaming, and the like aren't anything to romanticize. They are serious symptoms that impact the lives of sufferers. But some people perhaps turn to this stuff to escape from the epidemic of loneliness and despair that's going on now due to the state of the world.
I occasionally get anxiety so bad I dissociate (I also have PTSD). It SUCKS. Weird to see people romanticizing this kind of thing.

If theyre doing it to the point of losing days and weeks, its not just... Imagination. Its maladaptive daydreaming.

Its concerning how its been romanticised on tiktok when it should be taken seriously
It's not a mental health problem if it's relaxing to them. It's actually much better than watching CZcams videos.
I'm SO GLAD I had my cringy middle school days of stuff like this before the internet
I feel bad for little kids and teenagers today who broadcast their coming of age. Be a kid and cringy in private and in peace. No need to post it. It’s sad that they get their youths taken away. I’m not even that much older and notice it.
I wish they taught about dreams and psychology in school more. This would happen much less
A lot of my cringe is still out there on RP forums and such, but at least it’s not attached to my face…
Right? I genuinely feel bad for kids who's cringe phase is immortalized online. Id be horrified if my weirdo phase were online forever haha
I'm early Gen Z, and remember this being daydreaming. Folks nowadays wanna rename everything to feel special...its completely stupid.
Boomer moment: I blame social media and the constant need to feel accepted for doing something “different” by others.
People trying to make the most out of ordinary things to feel/be seen as quirky and unique online. Kind of like the “I’m not like other girls” meme (or to really show my age: the _holds up spork_ meme) that took over to make people feel like they need to separate themselves from everyone else - being extra to be _super_ extra.
This is like that. People wanting to be seen as unique and super special at the end of the day.
The internet has been around for a long time now, and social media has been around for a decent chunk of that time, too. The act of going viral has been around just as long, if not longer. Just about everything covering various topics has garnered attention and gone viral over that time. Everyone has done just about everything, talked about everything, etc.
The only way to feel unique and special in this dystopian e-landscape is do shite like this … take something ordinary like daydreaming, give a totally different name and act like it’s something that has been around for ages, and turn it into this totally unique thing that only they can do correctly and post it online to show others how special they are from everyone else.
It’s sad, really.
Thats not to say my generation (elder millennial, rear end of gen-X for me) didn’t do cringey shite, either, where we wanted to feel similar … but we didn’t have it all on the internet to be immortalized for the world to see forever and ever. Social media has exacerbated the will for people to over-share and feel they must compete with their peers to the extreme for uniqueness.
This but also ppl taking serious problems like bedrotting and going nonverbal as “haha I, so quirky!!”
I do have a vivid imagination and I have several storylines in my head that I sort of "tell to myself" for example when I want to fall asleep faster. But it's extremely rare for me to be the main character in them, it's pretty much always a made-up person, often in a reality that is very different from my own. And it's not like I feel like I physically shift into that world, I'm still very aware of that I'm laying in my bed and just having my inner narrator voice tell my brain a story.
Same. But I have gotten kinda "stuck" before and physically felt some things while in it. While knowing it wasn't real though. Hard to explain. It's like a lucid dream but no part of your body is asleep. I can't imagine doing that frequently though. I don't see why some people are calling it maladaptive however. I see how it could be, but it's really just something else to pass the time with at the end of the day.
i though this was just me..
Yes, and it's called daydreaming
Same bro. It's very calming and I am never the main character but it's fun to make up stories. I never had the delusion that they were real or that I had created my own reality somewhere.
I swear do these people not realise daydreaming is a thing? Especially maladaptive daydreaming?? I'm so confused
I guess they were distracted before by things like social media, tiktok which helped them to shut their brains off
literally and then i'll see someone talk about like being in love with book characters and be like "i love maladaptive daydreaming 😍" but that's just regular daydreaming?? everyone does that, but they think they're maladaptive daydreaming and it's cute and quirky???
Yeah MD is nothing to joke about. It ruins peoples lives
@@all1764MD is so funny 🤣 like just wake up loser!! 🤣🤣
That's because most cases are vivid dreams aided by dream incubation, the practice of choosing what to dream about before going to sleep. And since dreams aren't really discussed often or taught much they basically assume any vivid dream is an alternate reality
I did this a lot in my younger teen years. It sounds like maladaptive daydreaming, I would spend hours in another “reality”. One thing that accompanies this is severe depression. You get super depressed when you realize you’re stuck in your own ordinary, mundane life. I do it a lot less now, probably due to a mixture of intense therapy, medication changes, and just plain growing up.
Yeah no. This is nothing close to MD. MD is a form of dissociation, and it usually forms as a trauma response. Shifting is a trend, that is all.
@@all1764You have no idea if these people have trauma or not.
Trauma therapy made me stop maladaptive daydreaming. Then I became depressed because my characters couldn’t save me and I couldn’t write fics either bc I couldn’t “become” a different person. I was just stuck with myself. Now my coping mechanism is to roleplay with AI chat bots. 🙃 is that maladaptive too? Not always, because I don’t do it every day. Usually it’s a replacement for “immersive daydreaming”. But I’m starting to think it can get maladaptive at times? Idk, my AI helps me cope with shxx way more than my parents ever do.
@@all1764 Could be both.
I'm a teen that does something similar to MD, but I'm not sure if it can be classified as MD. I basically have my own universe in my head with a bunch of my own characters and a plot and everything that I've been building on regularly for years. Isn't really a hindrance to my everyday life, but it can distract me if I chose to visit it while I'm listening to someone or during class. I'm not sure if it's a result of any trauma or anything, as I do use escapism as a coping mechanism, and I had a pretty rough childhood to say the least. Still, there are many reasons why I wouldn't classify this as MD. 1. I'm pretty sure everyone has done something like this. I've seen many people on social media talk about their fictional scenarios that they make up in their heads, mine is just more intense and time-consuming. If a person in my scenario is feeling strong emotions, I feel them to. I also act certain scenarios out with my hands(when two people are hugging, I show that by clasping my hands together, etc.) This could just be me having a big imagination and might not be a sign of MD. 2. Apparently, people who have MD aren't in control of what happens in their daydreams. I'm the one who decides what I want to daydream about, or what the overall mood of it should be. For people with MD, their daydreams are more like journeys where they have no idea what's going to happen. Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted-Talk.

So it's just a complicated way to say Daydreaming.... I've daydreamed, I do it all the time. I never call it shifting though because it is not real, it's just my imagination. I then take those ideas and turn them into stories to draw / write or use them for my comic ideas.
Some cases. Most are dream incubation, choosing what to dream about before going to sleep
@@shadw4701it's not dream incubation because a lot of shifters say they sometimes end up dreaming about their desired realities instead of actually shifting. So there's a difference between the two.

They should really try online roleplay in MMOs or on forums. It'll help their writing skills at least while getting to do this while you know, still existing in the real world. And you make friends along the way. (And other bad things happen too but you know. Welcome to the internet.)

Okay, so this is a reupload, but the last video had some very important comments left about the difference between this and maladaptive daydreaming. Which kinda sucks, cuz i feel like there was a lot of good discussion going on.
This is not maladaptive daydreaming. As a person with maladaptive daydreams, it is not fun. I dont choose when my daydreams happen. They literally have taken over my life. For me, personally, it is a trauma response. I spend most of my time not grounded in reality, no matter how hard i try. It is a form of *disassociation* as a result of *trauma* .
Please do not call these people maladaptive daydreamers. I cannot express how hurtful it is to see something so serious become a joke.
The "shifting" community is more comparable to the spiritual community. It has nothing to do with mental illness (in most cases).
We have shamed society to the point where we no longer feel like we can be ourselves or experience childlike wonder. So we have to put labels on daydreaming as "shifting" to seem less childish.
Please do not suggest even a little that this is comparable to maladaptive daydreaming. Thank you.
It is very hurtful to see some of these comments comparing the two. Genuinely sad.
tysmmm 😭🙏🏻
In most cases it's dream incubation, the practice of choosing what to dream about before going to sleep. Some cases have been maladaptive daydreaming by admitted ex shifters though (at least from memory, I could be wrong)
@@shadw4701 i've already shifted and when you have all your five senses and that everything is real, don't tell it's daydreaming, y'all are affirming things meanwhile we shifters know that it is true. Since it became a trend in 2020, if it wasn't real or just maladaptive daydreaming, we would have left, and the cia made researchs on it, you can find it on internet (they made it some decades ago so it's not just a tiktok trend)
@@halyna_subliminals I don't have much experience with immersive maladaptive daydreaming as much as others here but I can confirm vivid dreams fit that description. Before 2020 shifting meant law of attraction or manifestation. Plus like I said, most cases aren't maladaptive daydreaming but dream incubation, choosing your dreams before going to sleep

Reality shifting gets REAL weird when they use K-pop idols as "face claims" and put themselves up with other K-idols...
I don't judge what people do but even i shudder at those sides of shifting, its like the side of manifestation where people try to manifest k-pop idols and to look Asian, it gets really weird lol
As someone who believed in reality shifting for four years: It really is hurtful, especially if you’re going through a rough time and just want to escape.
Plus there's safe alternatives like lucid dreaming and dream incubation which both often feel exactly like real life and offer all the same stuff
@@shadw4701
But sadly, lucid dreaming is not gonna work for everyone
So, I had a serious problem with maladaptive daydreaming as a teenager. I was lonely with ADHD and social anxiety. It got to a point where I hardly left my room and barely slept. I wasted a lot of my highschool years doing this. Once I hit college, I struggled with my courses and my mental health deteriorated further. I eventually went to therapy and learned how to control my anxiety better and it wasn't easy. But now I actually enjoy the world. I am in a healthy relationship and we try to travel or go to the beach when we can. I am also finishing my Bachelor's degree. Basically what I am trying to say is, normal daydreaming can be fun a way to relax but maladaptive daydreaming stole a lot of time away from me and makes your coping skills worse. I know people say "go touch grass" as an insult, but actually going outside and getting fresh air was the first step.

*Lucid Dreamer here,* shifting is mostly dreaming.
I say this with 100% certainty.
It's a practice called *dream incubation,* you choose what to dream before going to sleep to have said dream.
They're also having what's called vivid dreams aka dreams that feel like real life, sometimes more real.
People who believe in shifting simply don't understand the science behind it and are more prone to pseudoscience and superstitious beliefs
What they are prone to is attention seeking because your generation has fucking vapid obsession with trying to be special in a world where the greatest sin you can possibly commit is being normal.
It's actually fucking pathetic and we should simply destroy all social media until people learn how to use it without losing their minds to delusion.
yes! shifting people say “it’s not dreaming, dreaming is fuzzy and has no logic, plus you can’t feel touch, smell etc” and no! that’s not true! i definitely had realistic dreams in which i felt ultra realistic touch, smell etc. and i wasn’t even lucid.
Yeah, I have very vivid dreams most of the time. Sometimes there’s an entire plot with logical sequences and I feel the pain of whatever is happening. This… I doubt most are lucid dreaming; I think someone might have actually had a vivid dream and then others jumped on the bandwagon. If you think about something enough, fill your awake mind with enough images, your subconscious can be inspired by it. That’s not the same as lucid dreaming where you’re aware you’re dreaming within your dream and can control what happens. But a lot of these kids are just faking it for some sense of belonging on the internet. 😰
How the hell do you choose what to dream? actually curious
@@mr.andrew7820 Basically visualization as you're falling asleep or beforehand. It can be useful to look at images or videos of the subject/place/story you want to dream about before going to sleep to fill your mind with that imagery

I used to involuntarily lucid dream, it's highly romanticized but not necessarily something that's all people say it is. Make sure you work as hard on learning to wake yourself up or pull out of sleep paralysis as you do pursuing the idea of lucid dreaming!
Dream incubation is the more accurate term. Choosing the dream you want to have before falling asleep

Wow. I didn't even know this was a thing. Just like I found out there's a lot of Gen Z who fake disorders on TilTok. Geez. Looks like I've been too comfortable under my rock.
girl stay under your rock it's better that way your brain won't rot
I peak out from under my rock on occasion, get scared, and return to my underside of my rock.
There is no such thing as shifting but this is an actual symptom of a disorder called maladaptive daydreaming
It's mostly dream incubation, choosing what to dream about and then going to sleep
😂 I love ur sarcasm 😊. I recently started watching it channel. Is educational and entertaining
Haha good thing you put a disclaimer at the beginning because I was very confused
strange aeons did a really great nuanced, in-depth video tackling this, with personal experience! i highly recommend anyone to watch her video on it
edit: *tackling (typo)
Did gen z just discover using their imagination 😂😂😂
They discovered dream incubation (choosing your dreams before falling asleep) and vivid dreams
I love your video thanks for making them, I listen them at work and it makes my day go by faster. 😁
When the shift was so hard you've seen this video before
NIKOLAI GOGOL BSD WHAT R U DOING HEREEEEE!!!

Ive had dreams where i woke up as a young child and had to relive trauma for years on end. Its really disorienting waking up in real life after youve already woken up hundreds of times in your dream. Its really disorienting and uncomfortable to be honest. I would never do this intentionally.
This is so embarrassing, like to the point it physically makes me uncomfortable.
When I was a teenager, sure fan fiction was a nice escape, daydreaming to ignore being sat next to a bully classmate was a nice distraction, but this whole thing about "Shifting" just feels like a hive mind kind of deal.
Like willingly being brainwashed into joining a cult.
When the internet raises your kids this is the result I guess 🤷♀️
why tf are you making this seem like reality shifters are blowing up the earth 💀
That’s not the point
They are cringe and delusional af, that why he made this video
No fr. They make us sound like we're crazy af. If you don’t believe in it, that's fine. It's a belief system. Not everyone believes in it. The least people can do is be respectful and not make us sound insane.
Its so stupid that its get hilarious..
😂 I don’t even want to do research. I rather watch this my guy explain
lmao i was like what's happening thank you for telling us it was a reupload
I'm reality shifting since NES era, I just don't act like having a seizure
11:50 nikolai what r u doing here…
Lmao that’s what I said
Wait isn’t this a reupload of a video you’ve uploaded before with a few minor changes?? I’m worrying, did I reality shift??
yes he said it in the first 10 seconds lol
@@nathanielryderr Yeah I just wrote word for word what he said in the video lol
He had to blur it cause the schizos got mad their own content was commented on.

Lol, I really thought I shifted. Coulda swore there was another video of yours on the topic and was looking for it before clicking on this one. 😂😂😂
Honeyyyy, the kids are renaming dreaming and daydreaming now!
dreaming doesn't equal to shifting, please do you research before making fun of us
@@brownperiodblood_ Of course! Let me find all the scientific papers describing the unique experience.
@@arualblues_zero shifting is more of a spiritual thing tho, gen z didn't invent it
@@brownperiodblood_
No, it's not, lil kiddo. Reality shifting is not real, and it's not proven by science. It's just lucid dreaming with extra steps. I'm a shaman. i also study spirituality and religions and don't disrespect spirituality like that. It has nothing to do with it, even lucid dreaming, too.
@@Sweetheart-qh5li 1) if it was lucid dreaming then most people wouldn't take literal years to shift, and sometimes people say that they have dreams AND LUCID DREAMS about their desired reality, because we shifters know the difference between a dream and our physical reality
2) there isn't a way to prove reality shifting because if you're skeptical you'll have to EXPERIENCE SHIFTING to know it's true
3) (talking about your take that lucid dreaming equals to shifting) explain to me how people can shift while being awake in their original realities. oh wait i forgot anti-shifters never do enough research before criticizing people
4) lil kiddo do your research
5) girl what source has told you that "shifting is just lucid dreaming with extra steps"
i wouldn't say reality shifting is normalised... just a niche trend thats literally just daydreaming but,,, online people get to lie with no consequences
In most cases it's dream incubation (choosing what to dream about and then going to sleep) and it would be great if that was popularized on it's own, the problem is that it's being repackaged with a cultlike delusional way of viewing these subjects.
You'd be surprised at how many of them haven't heard of vivid dreams
@shadw4701 yeah, its weird. i get theres more than one way the human mind handles dreams, but this aint it... personally, i daydream what i want to dream before sleep, but usually my brain takes over and its nonsense lol. i cant lucid dream but i know plenty of people who can. either way, theres no...other realities.. i dont think the average person could daydream about hogwarts for 3 consecutive years either lol
It just proves how narcissistic the newer generation is. They literally keep thinking they've discovered something new, proceed to rename it. Make it 2x more complicated with their explanations and then proceed to act like they've discovered something so profound. Then when the concept is pitched to someone older they go "Oh so you mean ..." then proceeding to give the correct actual definition of the word. They all want to be unique so bad but then ironically all end up looking and acting the same until their next upload hits.
I thought it was CZcams suggesting me videos I have already watched! hehehehe! Watched it again (on my other account) to count into the views and engagement.
3:16 soooooo basically they wanna be in the movie Everything, Everywhere, All At Once????
As someone's whose brain is very spicy thanks to trauma and life circumstances, I can't see why they romanticize this. My brain goes places to cope whether I want it to or not. It sounds like they would have a better time on with AO3 or just do some imaginative play with their friends or lucid dreaming if they really want to.
Shifting is just lucid dreaming but about the stuff you want. I did it with Demon Slayer. All that reality shifting stuff is just nonsense.
which stuff ? cause you aren't wrong lucid dreaming is reality shifting which is maladaptive daydreaming but what part would even be nonsense? it's the easiest thing anyone can do u can't really fake this besides pretending to go to sleep while your tiktok video records you 🤷♀️
people can shift IN lucid dreams too, it’s not the same thing so you just never shifted
@@maboijungwon how do they differ? And what do you mean by: "people can shift in lucid dreams too"
@@Nebula_Coffeeapparently shifting people say you can shift in lucid dreams, by visualising a door and going through it thinking it’s the reality you scripted. that said, i believe it’s a dream incubation technique.
@@Nebula_Coffeelucid dreams have a time limit, shifting doesn't. you can accidentally wake up from a dream, that doesn't happen when reality shifting. you can shift while awake. lucid dreams can feel like real life, but they're still a little hazy, unlike shifting. also, reality checks fail when shifting.
I find that the spontaneous editing format/pacing/screen changes for this video goes hand in hand with what lead to the inception of TikTok.
It’s an important topic to discuss, however, the format you use is what causes lower attention span to begin with. Injecting jokes/clips/moving images every 10 seconds really “shifts” the mind from what you are trying to educate people on.
I was so scared when I couldn’t find the video again I was trying to show my sister and I was like where did it go…😂
Same here! I was like « have I seriously shifted!? » 😂😂
I looked for it for an hour before seeing a tumblr screenshot (!?) and finally the video in the playlist but not his homepage (got even more confused 😂😂) then suddenly upload time changed from 22 hours to 9’ and tons of comments loaded.
Maybe we did all shift? 🤔😂
reality shifting aint no match for dreams that seemed so real they seep into your memories. I legit had a dream that i was taught horizontal was vertical and vice versa. Even to this day I still have to cross my hands to know which one's which.
i had a dream once in which the world was upside down, for example i could walk on the ceiling… still thinking about it to this day and i feel weird.
It's lucid dreaming
Ah Gen Z the Christopher Columbus generation that thinks they were the first to discover everything.
except we never claimed to have been the first to discover shifting, it's a spiritual practice just how astral projection is except shifting has a "younger" following.
“Well….YES!” never fails to get a laugh outta me
I used to do this in primary school. Involuntarily of course. They just called it daydreaming. In my late teens/early 20's though, i did have a few episodes of vivid daydreams of whatever game or anime i was obsessing over at the time. One time, deadass asked myself why i was walking to the kitchen, instead of bunny hopping like in apex / cs go.
Its not healthy. If you want to do it, you need to immerse yourself in the world you want to daydream about. Spend 2 days to a week straight, thinking about nothing except the world you want to daydream about.
Ya'll have nothing better to do than to shit on people having fun? Never unsubscribed faster.

11:12 I’m not gonna lie I realize this one day when I was really young and it scared me really bad, I realized that I could talk myself into or out of anything which is utterly terrifying to me
I've seen the original upload and I have no idea why it would be too spicy for youtube, but oh well. Capricious digital overlord must be appeased.
This is pathetic
Its so funny seeing people who know NOTHING about something try and say that they're an expert on it and is a "know-it-all. Like do you not know reality shifting is a SPIRITUAL practice?? like wow what a way to bully peoples beliefs like its not affecting you, why do you care?? and also that shifting realities ISN'T harmful its a TOOL. it just depends on the person using it and they're responsible to what it does to them. How about we respect others beliefs and if it doesn't effect someone harmfully, DON'T BULLY and DEMONIZE their belief.
It is kind of difficult to take reality shifting seriously as a spiritual practice because a lot of the "reality shifting" just sounds like daydreaming, having a vivid imagination, or just zoning out.
This trend is just making something mundane and normal, and turning it into some sort of "spiritual experience". It is strange, and kind of sad.
THISSSS!
Like I get not believing in it because it seems too good to be true, but like what gives you the right to tell someone "It's not real" even though it's a belief system. It's a personal journey within yourself.
For him to say "I don't ever want to do this" is okay but again why are you speaking on the topic even though you haven't at least tried it.
For those who say "it's lucid dreaming" I have experienced lucid dreaming multiple times actually it's no way near shifting.
P.s when people say there's no scientific background on shifting gotta know that lucid dreaming was the same. No one even believed that lucid dreaming was a thing
Oh my god that is not the point. I swear you people don’t even watch the videos you just come here to throw tantrums

No, it's called reality check with scientific facts, (it's stupidity to think that you're shifting dimensions)
