  • STOP GETTING BOND WRONG...
I've had a tiny bit of a complicated relationship with James Bond... An avowed James Bond fan since early childhood but I grew up to come to sympathise with some (by no means all) of the criticisms levelled at the franchise from dyed-in-the-wool Bond-sceptics. "How can a liberal progressive be OK with such a character!?" some people cry.
Well, for lots of reasons and even though I agree with some of the criticisms levelled at James Bond, I do think most are too generalising and in bad faith. In essence, a lot of people write off the whole of Bond in bad faith.
So I'm keen to get into this issue - and loads more - via taking a journey through the complete literary and cinematic output in release order as my complicated relationship with 007 just got simpler and I rediscover my love of James Bond.
So come with me as we begin a James Bond 007 Supermarathon!
Aiming for a weekly Wednesday upload with this marathon but I'm not as good a shot as Bond so I may sometimes miss - but that's my goal.

This sounds like an intriguing project! And I say that as someone who subscribed for your Doctor Who marathon, and who has seen exactly two James Bond films in their entire life. Maybe you'll even convince me to give the books and more of the films a try.

I hope so! Who knows though? Bond is definitely not for everyone but it's so vast and the movies supercede everything in public consciousness that there's so much stuff people are missing

    Excellent.
Have a similar connection to my - not grandfather - but deceased father; through a shared enthusiasm for James Bond.
Superb memories of him INSISTING on me staying up to watch the first three ITV premieres.
And they’re inextricably linked to memories of the Hinchcliffe era - inevitably everything leads back to Who:
Doctor No was transmitted between eps 1 and 2 of Pyramids of Mars.
From Russia With Love - a few weeks after The Seeds of Doom.
Goldfinger - between episodes 1 and 2 of The Deadly Assassin.
And it was in the August of 1977 - during the week they repeated Deadly Assassin - saw my first Bond at the cinema: The Spy Who Loved Me.
And that same summer, read my Dad’s well-worn copy of Casino Royale…
    😁

I am a Bond fan, have seen all the films, with the exception of Never say never again. Tthe majority of them, I watched several times! Love the music, the locations, the stunts, the villians, the bond girls and the history and evolution of the films! Look forward to following your super marathon.

Though more of a Doctor Who fan, really looking forward to your Bond run-through. Two quintessentially British cultural phenomenons - god I miss Roger More.

I am really looking forward to this marathon. Like you, I am both a Doctor Who fan and a Bond fan. I only recently did a marathon myself a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m keen to hear your thoughts on each film. Love your work, Chris.

Thanks Ben, I know this will very much be a side project as opposed to all the Who stuff but I'm really excited about re-reading the novels, rewatching the films and going through them both all in order for the first time. I've reread the Flemings in order before, I've done a Bond movie marathon soooo many times but never done 1953-present day all the way through before. Glad you'll be along for the journey!

@@chris_stokes You are inspiring me to perhaps do a Hitchcock vlog. Many years ago I did a blog where I watched all of Hitchcock’s movies in chronological order. Maybe it is time to revisit but on CZcams… hmmm…

@@benripley2457 Oooh great idea. Even though I do consider myself a film fan there are gaps from his filmography that I haven't seen so I'd benefit from you doing a vlog like that!

I am a Nu Who fan, with an appreciation for the history and production of Who. And I have a few classics series under my belt.
But I am really interested in your series (despite having never seen a James Bond film, only played Golden Eye 007 for N64)!
I find our current time period quite interesting, while at times I can be burned out on the zombification and consistent rebooting of franchises.
There is something about series that have kept being active, once they pass the 50 year mark.
How they develop a lore, a response to the changing of time, different authors making their own changes, how they create spin-offs and licence their stories/characters/brands.
There is something magical (and a bit capitalistic), in how they develop. They have something that new contemporary media doesn't, legacy.
I am an artist and I make alot of paintings which respond to time travel, as a form of escape from the chronic fatigue. But in writing this comment, I feel a bit inspired. How could I respond to media legacy.
Regardsless, I am excited to see how your James Bond series moves forward! You are a very active CZcamsr!!

Thanks Danny, very kind of you to say. And you're absolutely right, it's not a distinction I'd consciously realised - having a body of work that large for that long IS impressive in and of itself!

I have an odd attachment to the Bond films. As in, like yourself, I certainly am all too aware of the bits that haven't aged well, or perhaps weren't acceptable even at the time really. Add to that the fact that, from my 20s onwards, my critical faculties matured, and I became a bit of a film buff, no longer attracted as much to crash bang wallop action. Yet, I still go to see each new Bond film at the cinema, caught up in the event, and some of the older films are 'comfort viewing' for me, being stuff I grew up with on TV. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts.

P.S. I am interested to see how you edit and create visuals to accompany the comic, novel and video games.
I dont think I have ever seen a CZcamsr make a such a trans-media review.
I have always wanted to do something similar. Perhaps reviewing every episode of Buffy and all its licences spin-offs. But alas, I dont have the energy.

I'm working that out myself to be honest! I'm sure it'll take a few videos before I find a method I'm happy with!
