      I wish they would improve on the replay function, add full complement of cars and not just 1 or 2. Just to name a few things.
      The driving itself in AMS2 is great in my view, but as a whole it is not (yet) complete in my opinion.

    The updates have been great over last few months. The game feels and drives very well. Latest patch has improved the physics even further. I've not done any AI races since the new patch though, so can't comment on that yet. But the AI were already pretty decent even prior to the update.

    Geoff Crammond's F1 Grand Prix on a 486 DX2 !! Those were the days. I started out on a 286 in early 90s then we got a 486 dx2, it was like a different universe. On the 286 I barely got the game to play on low settings. Suddenly everything ran full speed with all the track details and this new thing which was called "textures" (ok it was only a crap squirly effect on the track surface but still). Mind blowing.

    Credit to Reiza, aero pitch sensitivity (to an extent) and understeer both exist now, which they didn't in 1.5. I honestly feel like the FFB improvements (at least for my low end wheel) are one of the bigger improvements this patch. Albeit a lot of the previously absolutely horrible cars now have decent to good (if not great) physics, which I appreciate. But, as you said, the AI is still problematic. Brakes too early, pit maneuvers often, has magic grip, etc.
    Also, Buenos Aires 15 layout with group C is absolutely beyond nuts. Extremely recommended.

    I had this game for a while but hadn't actually fired it up until this patch came out and briefly gave it a go. I found it was fun to drive and the AI were fairly decent for what they are. It was good to see your perspective having more insight on the AI behavior and having driven the game previously. Nice strike by the way.

    F1GP on a 486 DX2 66Mhz... what a flashback!! 6 times worldchampion driving with a keyboard up to the hardest AI posible! Also liked to start from last in Monaco, and try to win the race!... Old anti-piracy method that made you have the manual to check some word in some page, so you could enter the game!... After that, got Grand Prix 2 with a Thrustmaster Formula T2 wheel! I have those in a "retro machine" and also others like Indycar Racing 2, Rally Championship 2000, Rally Trophy, Colin McRae 2.0, Grand Prix 4... That was the begining of simracing!! ;-)
    And I also don't play formula cars a lot these days... I might try those McLarens in AMS2 to see if I learn how to drive them!

    Before I couldn’t drive it for more than 5 minutes because I kept comparing it to RaceRoom and Ac1. Now I really enjoy it. This update was the ‘game changer’ that we all needed from a physics and ai stand point. So before it felt broken, now it’s damn good and really fun.

    I did a 50 minute + 1 lap dpi at Daytona race, fuel useage on with mandatory fuel and tyre change. The AI are not effected by the weight of the fuel but the player is. Their lap times were the same every lap where as mine came down drastically once my tank was down to 50% full. I’ve had to turn fuel useage OFF and now the playing field is level and fair. It’s definitely not ideal, but would recommend currently to race AI with fuel useage off.

  • @lewisbloom
    @lewisbloom Před 9 měsíci +3

    Some of the things you mention as bugs I do think might be actually properly simulated AI, for example people shooting off in the straights whilst using the cars that are known for that across the class, some faster on straights, some faster in corners and to a much greater degree than you see in modern racing. So maybe at least a little of what you mention with regard to the retro historic stuff is more a management of expectations on your side rather than a bug or maybe a mix of the two, 6 of bug and half dozen an expectation issue.

    I think the AI might be better on some tracks than on others. Some tracks they seem pretty consistent and decent, other tracks I'll see them do their best Forza AI impression and practically stop on straights.

    • @RonniePeterson
      @RonniePeterson Před 9 měsíci +1

      Have to disagree on that one. You stated your not a fan of F1 cars and I agree where modern F1 cars are concerned. But for me the Formula Vintage Gen 1 cars in AMS2 are about as good as it gets in any driving sim these days. Even better than the Formula Junior cars which are just a scream to drive. If you get a chance I would be genuinely interested to know what you think of the physics of either of these cars say at Historic Spa 1971 or where you prefer. . Please be brutally honest . If you think it is rubbish I would still want to know so that I know what it is that I enjoy and others don't. Appreciate you may not have the time or inclination so no problem if you don't. As for the AI I think the difficulty can be adjusted in combination with high aggression to provide challenging races for most of the cars/tracks. Grand Prix Legends is still my favourite driving game despite the fact that AI Surtees would hunt you down and punt you off at the first chance! @@randomcallsign

      @RonniePeterson I agree with you 100% I think the 60s & 70s & 80s F1 cars are some of the best you'll ever get in any game or sim, especially for single player racing. Tons of historical tracks and a big variety of historic cars. I even love the 90s F1 classes and the CART/IndyCar Cars. Racing these cars in the rain is tons of fun too. You just need to dial your force feedback in to how you want, it makes a huge difference to how the physics feel. But even if your FFB isn't dialed in perfectly these vintage, retro & classic F1 cars feel really awesome.

    I try and try and try. Im so stunned people like this sim that I continue to assume im missing something. So now even though I cant stand it I bought every single DLC ever made. Still dont get it. So people just run laps for no reason in cars that handle horribly against bad AI ? Is that really all there is ? No career so you just pick random tracks you have never heard of and race just because? No multiplayer of value. I truly dont know what Im missing.

    You touched on the two main problems I still have with AMS2 that other reviewers never seem to point out:
    - Slidey/sluggish physics. Something always feels off with the cars.
    - AI opponents with absurd amounts of grip/acceleration that can't be matched.
    I appreciate the updates from Reiza and I do think the game is getting better. I think the AI/offline racing is one of the most fun experiences one can find in a sim at the moment. The underlying physics of the game, though, can be really frustrating and ruin the immersion I'm looking for.

    Nope. Not fixed. Maclaren MP4/7A and MP4/8 are inconsistent. Wheel lock ups in MP4/7A. Other f1 cars also have wheels locking up. What the heck are these developers problems. F1 cars should have strong, powerful brakes without locking up. Should stop on a dime. Sheesh! Ams2 will always be a simcade with broken physics.

    • @TrackDayMedia
      @TrackDayMedia Před 9 měsíci +2

      Brake differently in an open wheel high down force car than you do in a regular road car. As your speed slows, you should reduce pressure to match the lower down force you get at the slower speeds. I set brake pressure to about 80% in AMS2 for formula cars

    • @vwsands8938
      @vwsands8938 Před 9 měsíci +2

      You don´t have settings profiles for each of your diff car classes? I have 5-6 completely different profiles for H-Pattern, Paddles, Sequential, Open wheel (brakes) GT3, (abs) GT4 etc, etc. Preventing flatspots (brake-lock) is a simple as dialing in your brake pressure ;-) That and learning that 40 year old F1 handle (and brake) a tad different than modern GT3´s. Just sayin.

    • @nicklibby3784
      @nicklibby3784 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Dude dial in your brake pressure......lower it a tad depending on your driving style, or lower it a lot if your the type of guy who just wants to mash the brake and hold it there.
      I personally have recently started running high brake pressure and have learned to be very precise with my braking. It is not necessarily faster, just a preference setting. It allows me to easily stop on a dime as long as I'm accurate with my inputs.
      I really don't notice much difference from assetto Corsa with the braking, other than assetto Corsa feels much more simple and less detailed when your about to lock up, whereas ams 2 feels much more gradual about locking up.
