So I don't want to be a downer on Mothers Day, but boy did this hit home, right where I live.
My Dad was a lot like your Dad, Paul, a heavy equipment mechanic by trade and a guy who could fix/build/create anything by necessity. Born in 27, Navy in WWII.
    Hot Rodder extraordinaire.
He taught me the same skills you have learned from your Dad. He taught me to braze, I did my first water pump R&R on an Oldsmobile Toronado when I was 8. He had broken his hand at work, and I was his hands. It was my uncles car, his brother...who somehow couldn't do more than put gas in the car. He teased me a lot until the day an 8 year old fixed his car for him.
I am almost 63. Married for 42 years to my high school sweetheart too.
I lost Dad when I was 24. He passed 5 months before his first grandchild arrived. He was 56.
I still have that Lincoln Buzz Box, and a PowerMig, and some other nice tools, and I have done my best to teach my now grown sons the lessons he taught me.
Seeing you with your Dad...really got to me. I don't mean to lecture, but don't take a single minute for granted, you are Blessed beyond measure to have him there and to see your kids grow up. I can tell you know it, I just had to say it.
If the world wants to solve its problems, the same men who built it are around...they teach the values of self reliance, honesty, integrity, and the value of family bonds. In other words, they need to look at your folks and the lives you and Michelle have built, and follow in your footsteps.
God Bless you guys. Sorry for the rant.

I never met your Dad, but I can relate. My Dad was born in 27, out in eastern Washington state, and is still with us today. At 16 he was hired by his neighbor to rebuild a combine, had the reputation as a very young man as the best combine operator anywhere around. I inherited his mechanical ability, and ended up an engineer in Silicon Valley without the benefit of any 4 year engineering degree. I build the very first computer disk coater in the very early 1980's, and after 50 years old reinvented myself as an IT and AV consultant. Today, at 67 years old I have all the work that I want, and am very blessed. Thanks be to God for his goodness, and all the blessings that have come my way.

@Arch Stanton...Well said, a really good comment. I lost my Dad over a year ago but he left me and my brother his tools but the one thing that he gave me as my high school graduation gift was his 1971 Chevrolet C-10 pickup truck. I still have it and in the process of restoring it, I bought some parts for it but still have some ways to go but I will do it and get Yesterday's Chevrolet running again 👍🇺🇸..

My son and I stopped in at Arche's for lunch last Thursday while passing through Orderville. As luck would have it when we told your Mom we saw this place on CZcams when Matt and Paul stopped after one of Matt's recoveries. Your Mom answered with " Paul is right over there having his lunch. Go talk to him . He don't bite!" It was a pleasure meeting you your Mom and some of your crew. Thanks for the conversation and have a great trip to the Rubicon and Fordyce trails here in the California Sierra Mountains! Remember you have my card if something we can help you with comes up while your out here. Oh yea we met Matt and his crew Friday at his shop ( the one with the hole in the wall) on Friday too!

I think people connect to your channel because you all are genuine. The content you create touches people because it shows life's basics. Family, friends, hard work, the things that matter. Nothing special, the simple things in a complex world that give life meaning, purpose, fulfillment. Things that everyone has the potential to have, do and achieve. You do this with humility and a sense of humor. Just makes it better. This may sound corny but I think its accurate.

Paul. Read this one: I'm a 64 year old retired Mechanical Design Engineer. Part of my time was as a Design Engineer for a major Japanese motorcycle company. I had tons of the best talented Fabricators money could buy and we had a near limitless budget. I learned a bunch from those guys. However, in all my years of designing, engineering, and fabricating I never met a single individual with so much talent and ability. I watch you make cardboard templates with a maker and in no time you have fabricated a part. Need to machine something? No problem just go over the old Lathe. Of course, there is the welding.... Thanks. You blow my mind at what you can do and how humble you are about doing it. I'm learning from you. Thank you for showing us how to get it done! From John in Fallbrook, CA

What a great tribute to Grandpa Sherm! Much of what I've learned to do, I learned from my dad. He grew up on a farm where there wasn't money to buy new or have things fixed or built. So he learned to be a jack of all trades. Keep all the great content coming! Oh, and I recently wore my Fab Rats shirt while doing a brake job on the wife's van!

@@block4565 Yes there are. And I certainly don’t want to take anything away from the families of the world. Just want Michelle and Paul to know the backbone of the USA is hardworking, industrious, make it work, good, honest families like theirs. Even if there are politicians and CEOs and advertising executives and a laundry list of other narcissists that would like to take credit for themselves.

It's great how much you learned from your dad, and he supported you teaching and fiddling with stuff. My dad thought me working on cars, and has tried to support me fiddling with stuff but has never understood my wanting to build it instead of buying, but I'm trying to teach my son to explore, create, and learn, so its great to see you let your kids build things, and support them. Love seeing your family creating, building, and learning together.

This family is the best representation of America that I have seen in a long time, maybe ever. Hard work, love and respect for your elders, keep an open mind and a fellowship with your neighbor, take care of your family, and fend for yourself. You make me proud to be an American and give me hope for the future of our country. The wierdos on the coasts ( where I live) refer to you as "fly over country" but I refer to you as the essence of America. You are the personification of what has, and continues to make this country great. Enough said.

Hello Paul and Michelle, quite a bit of water has gone under the bridge since you made this video, most significantly the passing of Paul's dad. With the knowledge that this video brings it is easy to appreciate the huge significance of your journey over the last 15 months. You are a credit to the values and beliefs you stand for.
