Rivals of Aether. One thing I love about the game is that every character has one "stage-wide" mechanic. Three examples: Orcane lays puddles which he can teleport to at any time, Kragg can pull up a giant pillar to get in the way of opponents or aid in his recovery, and Ori has a little orb-thing called Stein which follows (him?) around and powers up his attacks if they're together.
And then you realise the game has Steam Workshop support, and suddenly you're playing as Minecraft Steve (with a completely unique moveset to Smash), fighting Yellow from Animator vs. Animation, a cat who can program his own special attacks mid-battle and Goku (and that's just from ONE mod dev)

Interesting fact about Playstation All-Stars: Crash Bandicoot and Spyro were heavily requested and considered by the developers. However, as you mentioned, they aren't owned by Sony. They're owned by Activision. Fans and devs wanted them, but Activision wanted an exorbitant amount for them.

I think the best hope for having Crash and Spyro in a platform fighter is to hope they get put on the next Smash. Ultimate already had some non-Nintendo characters and Nintendo has the money to make it happen.

Regarding PSAS the story is actually really interesting and sad
So the Devs Sony gave the project to were mainly experienced on ports
They tried to get several big PS related characters but had several issues
1)Some IP holders said no (like Eidos)
2)Some IP holders asked for too much money (like SE with FF characters)
3)Some IP holders wanted specific characters to be added (hence Raiden and Donte instead of Snake and Dante)
And finally Sony didn't give them much of a budget to begin with
So in conclusion Sony wanted Smash Bros but they didn't want to spend Smash Bros money, something Sakurai has mentioned several times is one of the main issues with each new entry

Dude, I was kinda looking forward to Multiverses by Warner Bros. It had a solid game on release, if a tad bit lacking, but it could have been easily fixed. Unfortunately the unrealistic goals for their devs and extreme push on monetization ended it's career before it even began. I still think a fighting game balanced around 2v2s specifically would be awesome, it's just unfortunate that Multiverses was burnt to the ground before they had even finished building it.

Same, I actually still have MultiVersus but the game never really got me hooked on playing more. When I started playing it, it never taught me the controls of any of the fighters. Instead I think I had to pause a game or go somewhere in the menu to look at the fighters moves. Honestly, the damage% works in the game the same way as Smash Bros.

    • @djandjb1
      @djandjb1 Před 6 měsíci

Idk if this games coming back, but if it does it has to come back with a lot of work on it. No more dodge spammy BS, most characters have enough moves that retain air momentum/verticality and also there is essentially infinite wall hopping so no idea why they need to have two air dodges that you can spam. I also don’t personally love the floatiness, but I don’t think that will change since it’s kind of the DNA.
As far as why the game crashed when it did, no it wasn’t just the character release schedule they couldn’t keep up with, it was the various bugs/issues that persisted for months, the fact they were so slow to address ridiculously imbalanced characters (Season 1 Finn was not ok, Stripe on release was NOT ok) Harley took forever to get to a decent spot of balance, and some characters were just no where near as cool as others (Gizmo, although with a decent-ish moveset, is completely underwhelming. How did he get in before Beetlejuice? At least if we’re going with 80’s icons he would have been a more exciting and fun pick, can’t even imagine the moveset they would have given him)
Basically it needs a 2.0 overhaul. And it has had the time… it all a matter now on if they put the time to good use. As awesome as NASB 2 ended up being compared to its original game not even a year earlier, I hope that that becomes the similar case for Multi, because there are some awesome characters in this game that I do miss, like IG, Superman, hell I even miss smacking fools with Garnett. But we’ll have to see, and if I’m honest, the silence is deafening, and at the same time, may say a bit more than any of us actually want to hear right now

Rushdown Revolt was a game that experimented with what I think NASB 2 hit perfectly on their slime meter mechanic. In RR, the meter is called "Spark", which lets you do similar things, but you generate spark much more frequently. Every character also has very unique mechanics to them, like their puppeteer character lets you alternate between two no matter where they are, there's a fighter that takes the grappler archetype to the extreme, etc. I think NASB found the perfect balance in having a deep mechanic without the user requiring it as the floor, but if you want to see Guilty Gear Roman Cancels in a plat fighter, Rushdown Revolt can be very rewarding.

I have great memories of the first one, was even the first game I played that made me a Digimon fan at the same time. Reapermon is now one of my favourite Digimon but ironically that was because he has been etched into my soul as one of the most frustrating final bosses of all time. His AI was complete BS, and the only way I could beat him was to keep running in the opposite direction and chipping away at his health bar until I dealt enough damage to Digivolve. But alas I would be dammed if the feeling wasn't great when you finally beat him for the first time, and your reward was getting to play him right away after the arcade ending, and he was just as OP as the AI handled him.

Rivals of Aether - a sequel is coming out next year and the modding community is insane, every character has an element
Brawlhalla - gimmick is that everyone has the same moveset except for two weapons they can pick up off the ground
Multiversus - currently unplayable but uuuuh
Fraymakers - an indie love letter by the makers of Super Smash Flash 2
Super Smash Flash 2 - an incredibly polished fanmade Smash game
Brawlout - eh kinda mid I know it exists from an Alpharad video
Slap City - I know it exists at least and is apparently really good

Please do have an entire section dedicated to Rivals of Aether in the sequel of this vid. It's a great game on its own but when you find the stuff that's in the workshop, I'd say the game is almost as good as actual smash bros. Thousands of creations and about half of them are incredibly and surprisingly well designed. Some favorites I have to mention include a Steve (Muno), Mario Pissing (new one), Reimu, Morshu, Jerma, Spamton, Chara, Paper Mario (The Origami King), Gengar, Sanic, Terra, Goku, Crewmate, Untitled Goose, Henry Stickmin, Phoenix Wright, Peashooter, Hotel Mario and Luigi, Mecha Sonic, Ronald McDonald (just HAD to include him here, he's basically the face of Rivals modding) and that's just a fraction of the characters that I personally love and I think you'll like them too. Only issue that I think you'll really have is that the game's main roster is kinda furryish and half of the workshop also contains furryish ocs, however I think they're very well designed both visually and how they play so I think it doesn't matter.

You know, this video made me realize why Smash succeeds as a platform fighter, and it's not limited to the IPs being used, though that helps a lot.
The way you defeat your opponents by launching them off the stage is inherently a platforming element, as you need to jump back to the stage.
By having the victory and survival element tied to platforming, they can put more emphasis on the movement of the characters, which again, leans into the platforming element. This makes the game feel a lot more natural.
This is also why stage hazards are a fun element. The movement is enjoyable making the scramble to evade them or abuse them entertaining in of itself.
For reference, look at the classic break the targets stages from melee. They had unique designs that made you use the movements and attacks of each character in an interesting way.
Thus, smash succeeds as it's more platformer than fighter, and commits to it.

The roster may be small, but each character is so unique with their moveset and personality. The best part is, that it's both for casuals AND competitive players! Brother I don't know if you're getting bombarded with the recommendation but if you're looking for platform fighter goodness then Rivals of Aether and its upcoming sequel Rivals 2 are definitely worth a look. I'd say NASB2 hits a better balance between casual silliness and competitive sweat, but RoA's execution on that competitive sweat is honestly masterful. Character movement is fast and snappy, tech like wavedashing and hitfalling are made incredibly easy to execute on, stages have a nice amount of variation in terms of layout, and if none of this satisfies you then pop over to the workshop, download Ronald or any of the other crazy mods on there, and have fun with that.

rivals of aether, slap city, roof rage, rushdown revolt, fraymakers, brawlout, and smack studio are all platfighters i know of, but personally i'd love to see you cover rushdown revolt. Unfortunately its a bit hard to recommend since its a bit buggy and doesn't have many players, but its the game i stuck with the most because of its gameplay. Learning combos was really fun because the game behaves similarly to nickeloden allstars 2, where you can slime cancel moves to link up attack. However in rushdown revolt, you spend "spark" in order to cancel your attacks, and to gain spark all you have to do is hit the opponent, which will lead to a lot of combo game at all times. It is a bit similar to turbo modes in smash mods. Spark can also be used for movement options aswell, you can spend it to super jump, so if you have a hard hitting attack that launches far, you might be able to super jump towards the opponent to still be able to follow up. Rushdown revolt also has some mechanics seen in traditional fighting games. For example instead of having a percent, you have health in this game and you have a one time per stock resource called burst, which is used to get out of combos or to even further extend your combo game. The characters in this game are also very unique and each have their own signature mechanics, which I won't really go over since its a lot. Overall, i think rushdown revolt is really fun gameplay wise, but the menus, bugs, and other things kinda drive people away. (slap city and rivals are also pretty good, but i think no one will talk about rushdown revolt that much)

I can think of four platform fighters for you Skooch, Rushdown Revolt (smash but focusing on the competitive scene), Rivals of Aether (the same but they're still willing to have furries and cartoons), Multiversus (smash but it's a 2v2 four person game which is some actual differences to smash) and Brawlhalla a game I never see not hear, except for when its gigantic prize pools get mentioned.
Also bold claims at the start about Smash as a fighting game, many would take that as a declaration of war. Love your stuff.

It’s more of a Power Stone clone, but Shrek Super Slam is always a fun choice. It did the Super Move to kill opponents before PlayStation All-Stars, but honestly better. There’s a mechanic where if you shield a projectile correctly, it will reflect back to the thrower but faster. If they shield, the process continues, which leads to a ping pong match where the projectile just gets faster and faster until the poor soul who times the shield wrong is hit with a super move.

Indie Pogo is a platform fighter whose two gimmicks are right there in the name. It's a crossover fighting game between indie games, your Shovel Knights and Super Meat Boys and Bit.Trip Runners and Getting Over It With Bennett Foddys, and every player has autojump turned on. The game's balanced entirely around autojump. It has a surprising amount of depth.
And yes, you _can_ make Super Meat Boy fight the dude in a pot from Getting Over It.

If this video taught me anything, it’s that the platform fighting genre can take on numerous different forms, with some being more powerful and impactful as others. It shouldn’t matter what those competitive try-hards think. All it needs is the following three things:
    - satisfying controls
    - attacks with actual impact
    - a well enough balance between IP’s and OC’s
Trust me, with how trigger happy the lawyers of the AAA companies are, it’s inevitable that at least one OC is going to somehow find their way into the next indie platform fighter. How do you think Rivals of Aether got so far?
