Phish playing their song "Bouncing Around the Room" on April 29, 1990 at the Woodbury Ski & Raquet Club - Woodbury, CT. SOURCE: VHS tape "Live and outdoors - Phish"
I got into Phish during this era. The vibe was soooo mellow. Everyone was so kind and gentle. Things changed after Jerry died in 1995, and the phan population suddenly grew by millions. The deadheads needed somewhere to go.
Why are you all ripping on Phish. Get a life and listen to some music you actually like instead of ruining all of the stellar vibes given off by this peaceful, joyful music.
i understand this so well been bouncing round the room before they wrote this . its the spirit of music in them the inspiration of the gift given to them.
I came late to PHiSH after decades of traipsing to Dead shows. I'd heard about this "phish" band and was urged to check them out. I also play went to shows for the music, to learn, and enjoy. I quickly sussed the basic paradox: PHiSH are nothing like the Dead and entirely like the Dead. The most succinct way I can put it: After BFA, the Dead really began to stagnate in musical growth. What I love so much about PHiSH is their dedication to the music and musical growth and exploration
so glad i was at least born in '73 to have seen phish like this, we were so young and pure, i had just been seein' the dead for 3 years and still wet behind the ears, first year i heard/saw phish i was blown away, just blown away
Crap man, I was at all these shows in the late 80s and 90s and I dont feel that old! This band killed it in the small bars, clubs, farms and mini golf courses of New England in late 80s like no tomorrow...
Thanks for everything trey, mike, fish n page. Ya ll have truly changed my life n many others. I was in 4th grade in 90, n was not Pham yet but I d like to thank everyone who s come before me... Thank u for paving the way for the younger generations, if it weren't for ya ll we wouldn't be here. Thank u everyone from the bottom of my heart!! :)
I was a student at Plattsburgh State College in upstate New York in 1990. It's located only a few miles from Burlington Vermont. The bar I used to hang out at had a great house band. Trey used to sit in with them and I'd sit there amazed at his virtuosity. I had no idea who he was until a few years later when they broke big I saw a picture of him and I was shocked. "Holy crap, I know that guy! I used to talk music with him after he'd jam with the house band. I still can't believe it.
first phish song i ever heard. never truly cared for it until i got into their other stuff, but it will always hold a special place in my heart as that first experience..
I wasn't even born for another 2 months... haha I wish I was born about 10 years earlier. But for now I will appreciate every show I get a chance to see.
Agree 100%, I saw them in the winter of 94 at New Haven Colliseum..It was a snowstorm that night and I met my BF Jay a few days later..What a good time of year for me..I loved being a SR. in high school. I had a BLAST!
I first heard this when I was 16, i 1996, I had a one foot bong that I took everywhere. This change my life. I will never forget that summer or that girl.
I had this on VHS back in the day, watched it a lot. Things were different then. No youtube. Had to search these things out, and believe me I searched! It was worth it.
My brother had the VHS with cover art of this show. It was my first time experiencing Phish. I think hw gave it to the local video store where it was always checked out. Thought I'd never see this again. I like to think he started a wave of new phans in our town during the late 90s.
Video looks like its from the 70's. Trey's hair and beard, tie dye hanging up in the background. I freaking love Phish. Good freaking vibes everywhere! Saw em two weeks ago. Best show of my life
yeah heres my suggestion. this music is something different than what people are used to its so gentle but at the same time can melt your face off. give it a chance
ya this reminds me of the days walking around school grounds smoking doobs like it was nothing,,and jamming to the beatles,,I like to stage dive at phish shows and dead shows,,,and head bang and just straight partyyyy,,,whatch that axe mike,,,
The full length video was a hot trader's item back in the early 90's. I believe this is from Sugar Bowl. Brings back memories of watching this between tours.
@DANCEEXPONETS I do indeed remember, thats what made getting these that much more exciting and worth it... I had plenty of crummy one angle bad sound VHS. That how it was. I enjoyed that kind of searching for information and stuff... too easy these days
I saw Phish 1990 at Mabel's in Champagne IL & in the student union cafeteria at Northwestern in Evanston IL. They had tramps and Trey smacked his guitar neck while jumping and spinning. Between sets they were sitting in a booth on top of my jacket. I asked Trey if he had a back up guitar in case he broke his. He said "no, didn't even think of it. But that's a really good idea. I better have my guy make up another one".
To appreciate Phish, you gotta see them live. I was never a phan, but I figured the thousands of people who follow Trey and co. around just to relive that experience again and again can't be wrong. They aren't. Grab your drug of choice and find a Phish show, it will blow your fucking mind.
@beppegenoano one of the most unique shows I ever saw was in Italy. '96 Europe. A lovely town called Sesto Calende. Incredible scene, the venue literally had a beach out the back steps and a river going by. Maybe 300 people, it was HOT and packed though. I remember a girl fainting in front before the show. I can't believe myself and my moron friends actually found the place! Thank goodness we hooked up with some kids who spoke spanish which was enough to get us by and there! Good time ;-)
Also, Dead jams often meandered gently down winding paths out to the stew and back. PHiSH did the same thing at warp factor 8. The biggest difference I found between PHiSH and The Dead was cultural. PHiSH shows seemed to me to have an "OUR Band - No Dead Heads Allowed" vibe. There was always a sense at Dead shows, at their best, of "The more the merrier". Envision a '94 era PHiSH show with a '74 era Dead scene. Ooooooh, my! :>)
I'm a huge head and and while not a big Phish fan I'll put this tune and Sample as two of the better songs ever written. Phish got allot of blow-back due to the Dead resurgence in the early/mid 90's. Once Jerry passed many jumped on tour but they were well on the map way before that event. Again, not my first choice for when I need a jam but measuring them against the Dead has never been fair.

Jaded by Aerosmith
Best Phish video I've seen so far. The crowd looks awesome, the quality is amazing, the performance is playless. Phish is so unbelievably great...

It's phunny...this is timeless..this band will live on forever...long after the band has stopped performing live...this music will change lives...
They didn't change my life, but there's nothing like a Phish riff to make you feel totally free.
A totally 80s Phish jam! Look at all the 80s kids! Love it
this is like the millionth time ive watched this vid. i luv this song and i like looking for the people with mullets dancing/tripping.

It may not be tight but c'mon this is Phish in the 90's... I love the trip dowh memory lane, thank you for posting it.
My favorite of their jams
it's fun to see how things changed (or didn't change) since the distant days of 1990. I sure wish I could've been there!
seeing everyone so happy puts tears in my eyes

Phish is something special.
Same here. I'm so glad I saw them 15+ times between '91 and '94.
My brother had the VHS with cover art of this show. It was my first time experiencing Phish.

i think the funniest thing about this video is watching the people in the audience dance
love phish
