Welcome to the Letterman CZcams Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era. - Zábava
This in fact was a pivotal day in the history of phish. First network tv exposure and first sold out show at MSG. Consequently I had 3rd page side rage side at that show. Truly life changing experience. Love phish
As a kid growing up in Vermont in the 80s, we used to go see Phish when they were still playing gymnasiums and people's back yards. Loved it when they exploded in the 90s. I still try and see them once a year or so. Good times!
any old tape collection from back then by chance?
@@cleantones I never really got into the tape scene, sorry. Even to this day, I like them LIVE, but I don't really listen to shows after the fact
Always worth asking! Thanks.
@@cleantonesthis comment lmaooo
I lived in Burlington in 1987 and saw them a bunch at Nectars and jammed acoustics with them at an after party once. Still not keen on their lyrics, but great band!
Shortest Chalkdust ever but still brilliant
Phish is the kind of band that needs to sell out Madison square garden to get on network tv. It’s a major accomplishment beats all odds
How many times have they played MSG and when did they NOT sell it out?
@@6sfo your missing my point
I replayed this hundreds of times on my VHS recording. Artists always seemed to sound better on Letterman than anywhere else.
That room just sounds so good.
I just watched them on Conan and it was junk junk
saaaame
They were such a force back then. Phish from 1993-99 you could put up against any band. Still enjoying seeing them today too. Always a good time!
They were a force back in 89 to be honest.
Still can.
Garbage then, garbage now!! Phish noise!!
Agree that was there golden age
@@elguapo6750 I saw them in '89 at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY while in college. Great show but I haven't seen them since. Just kinda left it at that. Much respect for the band!
Paul tearing up the organ and looked like he was loving every minute of it!
He adds a nice layer of sound.
Paul????
@@1197nicksmith Paul Shaffer was playing along
Page side rage side. Paul knows what’s up…
He had the walkdown notes back to the chorus > outro too. so sick
Watched this live with some friends. It was so cool to see them get some recognition on national TV. Then we headed in to Boston to next night to see the infamous hot dog NYE show at the old Boston Garden. Great memories.
*run time: 4 minutes, 20 seconds*
I see what you did there.
Trey and the hammer pants! LETS GO!!
I’d heard a lot of references to Phish over the years, but this is the first time I‘ve ever heard them play.
😱 better late than never... welcome to the party.
I ignored them for the longest time but they're one of my favorite groups now. Even if a person HATED the band, their life shows are the best party on earth.
Welcome to the party. Hop on in !
Huge disappointment, right
If you don't get it. We don't care.
Went skiing in Killington in the mid 90’s. Every bar had Phish covers. Loved it. Thank you Vermont!!!!
Thank you so much for posting this! Phish always had some of their best TV appearances on Letterman, and you could always tell Dave loved having them on. It would be incredible if you could eventually post their other appearances:
7/13/1995 (Julius)
3/5/1997 (Character Zero)
10/27/1998 (Birds of a Feather)
5/16/2000 (Heavy Things)
12/19/2002 (All of These Dreams)
6/21/2004 (Scents and Subtle Sounds + the rest of their unaired show on the Marquee outside)
Don’t forget the Live on Letterman hour webcast show they did. 2015 I believe. Right before Dave retired from the show.
They recorded that the afternoon after one of the greatest phish shows ever.
Chalkdust wasn’t even on Hoist. Phish trolling the record company.
There's a British talk show where Nirvana played "Territorial Pissings," after the announcer claimed they were going to play one of their hits. I've got to find a clip with that.
i wouldnt consider it "trolling". chalkdust was on picture of nectar which came out a couple years prior. and it was a live favourite. dave didnt say this is one from the new album...... all he said was , they have a new album out now, hoist.
Chalkdust was a request from Dave himself.
My favorite Phish tv appearance. So happy this is back on CZcams
Page on piano and Paul on organ?! Hell yes!!!!
They were in PEAK FORM ON THIS ONE
I love all of the eras from Phish.
@@ryankartheiser855me too brother. Started seeing them in the mid 90s and my last shows were Oct of last year. 2 nights at the Nutter in Dayton. 🤯🤘👍🤣🤝
So glad they uploaded this. Always down for the Phish from Vermont.
I taught junior and senior high kids in mostly public schools over 37 years and yes, chalk dust torture is real ! I would always look forward to the summertime to go on Phish tour with some of my own children. Now that I’m retired, every day is a like summer vacation.

New Phish 🎉
Thank you Letterman CZcams!!!!
One of the best days of my life. Dropped 24 or 26 pts in a hs Christmas tournament game then went and saw my first phish show at their first msg show.
Did you also score 4 touchdowns in 1 game like AL BUNDY!!!!
No bragging
Hockey??
These boys will go far
I’m not a jaded vet. I love all eras of Phish but for my money 1994-1995 Phish takes the cake. Also, it’s not every day we get an HD video of Phish from this time period (or ever) and I don’t take it for granted!
LOL I love that it's 4:20.
Saw 3 shows in 94 Both nights at Red Rocks and Bozeman like a month before this man what memories!
Bozeman 94, the Tweezer from A Live One...what a treat! lucky man
You saw the 6.11.94 show. One of the tightest shows they've ever done. Great yem too.
i was 16 and recorded this on a freakin' VCR when this first aired - now ticketmaster implants tickets in our brains and we're downloading shows minutes after they are done...
those pants gotta go in the rock n roll hof lol
I just remember geeking out so hard whenever they were on TV, it was such a rare treat ⭕⭕⭕😊
Love me some Phish!
Saw PHISH a bunch during this time period, always on point and nailing each song they played. Trey, Mike, Page and John, the Boys From UVM, from Burlington to the World. Thanks for posting, VERY HIGH QUALITY!!!
30 years from this appearance and they're STILL the best band on the planet!
seamless transition!
between Trey's chest hair and beard I mean
Letterman was always the coolest. Best bands, best guests, they all loved andnwanted to please him. Late Night TV was different before him. Its funny to see Paul jamming with them
Paul jammin with the boys!!!
Wow, that was fantastic. I somehow never saw this performance when it aired. Thanks for posting!!
Always nice when Paul Shaffer jams with the band on the show.
The entire time I'm wondering where the organ was coming from.. then they showed Paul. Cased closed
Haha...Fishman looks insane in this clip! 😅😂
They were so dialed in in the mid 90s!
They still are...
So excited watching this on winter break from college and taping on the vcr ❤❤
All of their songs are torture! LOL
I love how Paul joined in on organ.
Perfect clip time.
Hah!
Had to come here for a nice pep talk. Thank you thank you.
First time seeing these guys was about a month beforehand. This is amazing.
Trey fist pump at the end let’s you know he loves it
Hell yea!
Yes!!!
Imagine stumbling upon this late one night and it changes your life forever 🤪
I could see that being a thing : )
This goes hard
"Phish Food"
I actually remember when this actually aired....
Me too. Bought my first TV. Gathered the friends in our first house. Damn fun
Actually?
Look how much energy they had…. They were on fire in this era.
Crushed
That was smokin for the reader's digest version
turns out Page is still wearing the same outfit, to this day. lol!
The O.P. went silent when this came on and we all watched our hometown heroes with amazement and pride!
Hands down 26yrs and enjoying phish….They are the best band in the land
Best Band ever… 🐠⭕️
Damn love they early 90’s Phish energy
I used to see 'em in the 80s at The Wetlands in Tribeca. Can I live while I'm old? Im Trey's age (60). :)
Everyone in this band looks like someone who would listen to, or be in Phish
teenager?
i never believed i was born in the wrong generation until i went to my first phish show with my dad a few days ago. i would do ANYTHING to be my current age back during this time! i cant find anyone my age who listens to them 😅
Dave loved Phish
Oops, Dave shows the back cover of the CD 😅
I realize y'all take summers off.. BUt when is the Barbara Gaines show coming back?
After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes end.
Paul helping makes me happy
I like how they cut off the intro...not much time, here.
Treys pants 🎉
4:20 perfect.
PHISH GENIUSZ GENIUSZ GENIUSZ nad GENIUSZAMI KOSMOS KOCHANI na zawsze dziękuję BARDZO

How I miss 1.0 phish.
Sadly those days are a distant past. Nothing like it anymore, unfortunately... 4.0 cannot compare Closest thing really is Goose imo.
@@elguapo6750 Eggy is the new Goose
@@butler-macdonald8351. Like Cities, I'll check 'em out till i've got it figured out. In the meantime, I've also been recently exploring Khruangbin... which I have to say I'm REALLY enjoying .

Sorry if you don't

...Letterman holding up the wrong side of the CD to the camera...
I wonder if this is the shortest live version of this gem?
It’s just the shortest version.
Dang i knew they were the cats from Venice .
Shortest version of this song
I miss Letterman
the close captioning needs some wooks to come in and assess accuracy.
Impossible to develop that type-2 jam in under four minutes.
Whoever was directing thought better than to have any close up shots of Mike.
Phish is ready for CZcams Shorts?... maybe my son will actually pay attention now.. LOL
Haha, that might be a strange experience and boy howdy missing out on a lot of good and great stuff.
KOA 1
He didn’t ask if that was fish’s drum set
Gold pants Trey = Best Trey.
Back when Fishman still had hair...
Henrietta Abdul-Jabbar! 😎
4:20 long... not a coincidence
Classic PCU era phish. Gutter is backstage.
Dats wassup
Paul played with every band haha
Haha? No. The point is that he really enjoyed this, you dolt.
treys pants
aaah back when trey's tone didnt suck
Ahhh, look at you trying to be cool. 😂
@@Marshall_Stacks Just admit the tone was far better
Trey mirth
Here before the haters 😎
Technically you're the 1st
Fantastic when there is no vocals.
Paul S. trying to hang with Phish . . . lol
No lol, you douche. Paul is down with what's up.
Did Phish die? Please God no lol
This has been the theme of the late show page, pretty morbid
Captions need work.
I sat by my vcr that night for this. Why post this now?
