- A Leica Conversation with Dr. Greg Gulbransen and former LIFE editor-in-chief Bill Shapiro.
When Robert Capa famously said, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough,” he wasn’t only talking about physical distance.
Dr. Greg Gulbransen, a physician and self-taught photographer, spent three years with a gang leader in the Bronx who ran his crew from a wheelchair. This program will cover a wide range of topics including how to build trust with your subjects, methods of quickly establishing rapport, shooting in tight spaces, and keeping cool in hair-trigger situations. Dr. Gulbransen will share images from his new book, “Say Less,” about his time with the Bronx gang.

Dr. Greg: I really appreciate your authenticity. That and respect and genuine curiousity/interest are surely the access key to the people (not "subjects") that you photograph. That is not a technique; it's a human quality. Truly validating and inspirational. I pre-ordered your book!
I shared it with my photo friends. A real blueprint on telling a story.
Congratulations Greg! Proud to be part of your journey
This was so moving and Dr. Greg serves as an inspiration for any aspiring documentary photographers.
Thanks so much for tuning in and for the note. Greg most definitely is an inspiration.
THAT was impressive! Glued to every minute- hats off to you!
Beautiful interview, so captivating, thank you 🙏 Dr. Greg is a real inspiration, a wonderful person, and gifted photographer. I will be looking forward to purchasing his book.
WOW.....telling the real story. I wish I could have seen this years ago. Good for you, Dr. Gulbransen. Thanks, Bill Shapiro.
This is phenomenal. Thank you.
Thank you for this presentation.
Missing John Kreidler. RIP
This was very interesting, enjoyable and educational. Thanks. For me, the "elephant in the room" question that wasn't asked was "how do you handle the moral aspects of perhaps knowing of or having witnessed a crime or perhaps a confession to such etc?" That must be a very difficult line to walk when wearing both a stethoscope and a camera, trying to build and maintain trust etc. I guess the time may or will come when you would be called as witness... I'm looking forward to seeing the book
Sublime and authentic
This was great.
We ❤ LEICA.
I think an important piece to this is the level of tact this man has and hat can't really be taught. You can understand it but now everyone had this I have seen. It's important to work with your strengths, respect your own limitations yet be willing to challenge yourself and stretch boundaries with that self awareness .
You photographed Malik with a firearm. Is there any concern this will be used as evidence against him? If he is a felon this in itself a felony.
