A couple bandmates and I were at the bar in the front of The Troubadour, and in walks Dave with Steve Vai, and they sit down at the table, and the five of us drank and BS’d for a long while. This was before Steve had been announced as Dave’s guitarist. Dave was just as you’d think he was, very Dave, and so cool to include my friends and I. I was not only a VH fan but had been going through a serious Frank Zappa phase and was intimately aware of Steve - his EP’s were on constant repeat for me. I soon sized up that night that Steve Vai was going to be Dave’s new guitarist. That first Eat em And Smile tour was fantastic. I met Dave a couple of other times, but that was the best.

89-95: greatest yrs/happiest time of my life.
96: Yr the internet introduced 2 the world.
Interesting how 95 was the end of my carefree, anxiety-free days full of fun/laughter/hopeful-vs worried/fearful/helpless & overwhelmed -days when I couldn’t WAIT 2 get outta bed & seize the day….so excited 4 the future.
And 96 was the start of the internet.
The beginning of the “age of technology.”…& the sad, downward spiral to where we r now…& thus my horror 2 deal with the reality: if this is where we r now, & it just gets worse, how could I feel any different?

    • @peanutbutterisfu
      @peanutbutterisfu Před rokem

His solo album? You know he made like 6 solo albums right? Well he didn’t make 6 albums, his “Solo” albums consisted of a ton of different writers. I don’t think he has one song on his solo stuff that he wrote entirely by himself. Some of the albums it’s kinda pathetic how many songwriters there are like “a little ain’t enough” album the amount of writers on each song is crazy there are songs with 4 and 5 writers on that album. It really defeats the purpose of a solo album having so many people writing for the artist. IMO if ur a solo artist it should mean that your so talented that you don’t need a band other then touring. Having a bunch of writers is what all the top 40 artists do. When Roth went solo it was no different then the Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears.

@peanutbutterisfu I think it has to do with the fact that he didn't have his music collaboration partner that he had with Eddie Van Halen, and that he could write anything to Eddie's music, and then it becomes a song, in order to continue doing that and putting out music in a timely fashion you have to have people that you know can get it done, he didn't know how Steve Vai or Billy Sheehan were gonna be in writing music

Yes, the mid to late 80's was the turning point in Rock from a fun party vibe, to a darker more angst inspired one. This paved the way for Grunge to take root in the 90's and would be (along with Gangsta Rap) the death nail in the coffin of bands like the DLR band. I don't for a minute think Dave foresaw any of that about to happen in 1985 when he decided to split with Van Halen.

A brand new story ’bout a great engineer,
He’s the greatest of them all we claim
Number one’s his engine, Casey Jones his name.
Casey Jones a steamin’ and a rollin’,
Casey Jones you never have to guess
When you hear the tootin’ of the whistle
It’s Casey at the throttle of the Cannonball Express!
There’ll be Casey Junior and old Redrock too,
Fireman Wally and the rest of the crew.
In a thrilling adventure that’s a lot of fun
When Casey takes the throttle for another run!

Sadly now children don’t get true talent as a influence it’s the internet insta celebrity crap that they aspire for. It’s sad.
