Why is this an important dental study video?
Orthodontic treatment aims at improving facial and dental appearances as well as enhances the relationship of the teeth and skeletal bases to each other.
As orthodontic treatment is becoming more accessible, parents and caregivers are requesting attention for their children at an earlier age.
The goal of early treatment is to correct existing or developing skeletal, dentoalveolar and muscular imbalances
The term “myofunctional appliance” refers to a variety of appliances such as oral screen appliance, bite plane appliance, activator appliance, bionator appliance, vestibular screen appliance, lip bumper appliance and frankel appliance, which mostly work on the principle of “functional matrix theory”, designed to alter the arrangement of various muscle groups that influence the function and position of the mandible in order to transmit forces to the dentition and the basal bone.
Typically these muscular forces are generated by altering the mandibular position sagittally and vertically, resulting in orthodontic and orthopedic changes.
This orthodontics lecture covers the different types of myofunctional appliances and their mechanism of action.
An understanding of these myofunctional appliances will help us appreciate the different ways in which malocclusion can be treated.
