This Is What Life Is Like In Small Town Arkansas

  • Who would have thought this was Arkansas?
    It sorta looks like it might be a touristy town, but it’s becoming more of a place to retire these days. Lots of old timers come here and see how we’re on the edge of the Ozarks and they see the home prices, and they’re like - you know what? I think I might stake a claim in this county.
    There’s about 12,000 people here today, and every day someone moves to town. You can’t blame em.
    Mountain Home is in between two lakes - the Norfork (ding) and Bull Shoals. This was actually one of the first water resort towns in the region because of all the fishing and boating they have here. There’s even a little bit of shopping, and dining and golf.

    @ozark1981 Před rokem +32

    Hey that's my home town!! I grew up there and left in the early 2000's a little after high school. That town is a place of two halves. The ones who have and the ones who have not. Growing up there the town had a noticeable divide. So much so that the town had two bowling alleys (The poor one has since fallen apart). And if you had money you went to one and if you didn't you went to the other. Basically a blue collar/white collar divide. Most people I grew up with left for the simple fact that it's really hard to make good money there. Crime is usually related to meth in one way or another. But hardly an issue. It's a great place if you want a slower lifestyle. You have two great lakes and two great Rivers (White and Buffalo). So tons of outdoor stuff. The retirement community use to be at odds with the locals pretty bad like fighting against improvement to the schools, park improvements, etc. Basically if it didn't help them they didn't care or wanted it to impact their retirement funds. Also Bull Shoals was called Little Chicago, not Mtn Home. The best pizza in the area is Bush's Pizza in Bull Shoals. Gaston's use to be the big getaway for country stars like Willie Nelson and the like. But once the country stars went to wearing bedazzled pants that kinda stopped.

    A few years of my Professional Engineering career was spent working in Arkansas. My career took me all over the USA so I got to evaluate a lot of places for retirement. Arkansas was near the top of the list. Mountain Home was the second place on that list. Hot Springs was clearly my number one. The main reason back in 2007 was the nearby medical support in Littlerock AK. If Mountain Home now has a University and upscaled Medical facilities it may be number one. When making retirement plans for you and spouse make plans that one of you will likely be a widowed person in the fullness of time. Retirement location will be driven by the kids jobs locations.

I grew up in MN (but have lived for the past 30 yrs overseas in some really humid places) so when it comes to humidity it is really a personal matter. Generally speaking, I think one's body can get acclimated to what are considered high degrees of humidity or dryness after a season or 2. For me personally, i don't think the humidity is too bad in a place like this. Sure, it will have some periods of high humidity but not suffocating like FL and parts of TX. This area is kind of a confluence of the northerly jet stream and southerly jet stream so it has a nice balance to it imo. Evenings are mostly pleasant. i probably only use my AC 30% of the time during the evenings in the summer. One thing that i was surprised about this area is that it is sunnier than i thought, even in the winter. You may want to have a visit in June/July and then again in January -February.

    Nick, saw this today. Family from the ozark region, cousin was post master there in Mountain Home. Couple things , well, one, drove me nuts , you fishing. Using a closed face reel and rod,Upside Down!! And not hitting the button to cast, no wonder it went out 5 feet from the dock. If you haven’t already, jump over to Mountain View Arkansas , especially in August. They have picking and a grinning going on. Right in the towns square. People just pull up a lawn chair and listen, folks from the hills come down play some down home country toons. You’ll enjoy it.

    the reason small towns are dying is because they still pay for globalized services and goods based in major cities such as telecom, netflix, google, car companies, apple computers, or tons of imported goods from other countries. so their money flows out to major cities, or all across the world to god knows where.. and in return the money they make comes from local jobs mostly, so the money flowing in is less than out, eventually the town will be in poverty. unless the town is a vacation spot for the wealthy, in that case they make their money in major cities or other places, and money flows in from their tourism and stuff.

    We attended MARIAN DAYS at Carthage Missouri from Louisiana go through Arkansas. We had to go through a pass, sitting in the car could look down into the abyss right next to the road that we were afraid of. From there we choose another route, although a little further but felt safer and only once did we pass through Arkansas again. 😄

    My family has been coming to Lake Norfork near Mountain Home for 4 generations. My great great grandfather was an engineer for the Utah Mining Company in the 40s and helped in the construction on the dam, and we'll as Hoover and Grand Coolie, he loved this area so much that he built a cabin here on his own in 1959, which served as a vacation home for my family ever since. My girlfriend and myself recently decided to to renovate and update the cabin and live here while we do it. I've been coming to this lake for 37 years and love it here. Granted, we are right on the lake and have a private dock, so we try not to go "into town" but once every 2 weeks at the most. 8 months out of the year it's very quiet, no traffic, no sirens, nothing, it's peaceful. My neighbors always help eatchother for free most of the time, literally help eatchother build houses. Everyone is friendly, keep to themselves unless you ask for help with something

    I’m from S. Arkansas and have always heard Hot Springs was the retiree town of Arkansas. Also Hot Springs has been called Southern Chicago because Capone had a home there. You really should’ve gone through Hot Springs or even NW Arkansas, they are both booming. Actually, our little town in S. Arkansas is booming and is having a great housing shortage due to industry development here and a thriving university. Arkansas has some of the lowest property tax in the nation. Retire or have disability Social Security, the low property tax goes even lower.
