Nice job, fyi. They are all standard pins and it is a 6 pin lock.if you look closely you will see that the 7th pin holds the core in. Keep practicing, you'll be real good in no time😊
If you need any help along the way of your advancement just let me know. When your ready I'll send you a challenge lock. It's about a intermittent level. Happy picking.....James 😊
Thanks! I appreciate your support. I just started a locksmith apprenticeship job, so I am looking forward to learning more and more within the next few years. If I get free time, I'll be sure to post some stuff about it here as well. Already picked up on some lishi picking!
Great 1st attempt on a good practice lock. I found with mine that the pins were so loose, and because I hadn't worked out the right amount of tension to apply, it took longer than it should have done to open it, it takes seconds now. 😀But I snapped my only decent rake in the 1st week of playing with the locks, so I have to pick everything, which is a pain, cos I know some locks can be opened quicker with a rake.
Thanks! I didn't realize how much patience is needed to learn how to lockpick with a hook. I've been having absolute fun with it since I got it, and trying locks around the house too. I'll probably make a video on those later when I successfully pick one 😂 The rakes are nice, but I think it's a little bit cheap and doesn't help you learn to lock pick those more secure ones later on. I made a short video yesterday with the rake, and I did it in a few seconds! Did you get your tools from covert instruments? The tools I got are really sturdy, and I've been pretty rough with it.
@@UnlockedLocksmith I just replied to this, did an essay, and it's vanished! Bugger! Edit: I bought my Goso & Lock Cowboy picks from Amazon, but UKBumpKeys over here do a great range too. I have all the transparent locks, but only concentrating on that padlock. So far, I've only managed to open a Master lock once, definitely a fluke! However, my medium-sized Wilko (UK Version of Walmart type of shop) lock, I can pick pretty quickly now. And my Comb set makes opening that lock you have, a very quick task. Looking forward to future videos' sir. Regards from Wales UK
You are right, raking is fast and cool to show your friends. As you progress you will see that unfortunately raking is not all that effective on high security pins, such as spools and serrated pins.practise makes perfect bub, keep at it and glad you've taken an interest in the sport!
@@UnlockedLocksmithExperts suggest that you don't pick locks that you rely on, because there is still a risk of breaking the tool inside, rendering it unopenable. Even with the best lockpicks, they will eventually warp over a long time. But you don't need to worry about that now. Have fun picking!
I love ld the clear practice lock for learning. Anyone who learns on them loves them. So many old heads who didn’t learn on them or never even had one talk crap on them which is just ignorant. They’re incredibly helpful. They also designed to be the easiest one to pick and take even easier than Masterlock Number 3. I had sooo much fun learning how to rake with it. I outgrew it in about four days but I’m So glad I got it. Next I got the Sparrows Cut out standard lock and the CI Practice Lock and they’re helping me right now.
That's awesome! I agree, they are really good for learning. It's also great to actually see what you're doing instead of just guessing when you practice on something like a master lock. I've noticed that the better I get at raking, the worse I get at single pin picking. I've mostly been practicing on schlage door handles, and have picked up a few lishi picks for Schlage and Kwikset. I much prefer lishi picking since I do mostly automotive for my work, and not much residential stuff. Unfortunately they are keyway specific unlike hand picking. Do you have any tricks you've learned to get better at single pin picking?
Owner Of Zims locksmith here in VT great video I too started with this FNG kit great starting kit but like McNally said you will get bored with that lock quick my next padlock was a master lock 140d I recommend master lock for the next step up it’s entry level but better than the clear lock it’s time for me to get a new lock to try and crack keep up the practice looking forward to seeing more videos from you
That's good to know! I haven't worked on a master lock yet, but have been messing around with door handles around the house. I think I'll pick one up soon when I have the time
@@UnlockedLocksmith A word of caution: One of the biggest tenets of locksport is "DON'T pick locks that you don't own or locks that you actively use." While the part about locks you don't own is obvious (we want to keep it legal and ethical after all), for the part about locks you actively use, picking can damage the mechanisms because you're working with them in ways you're not supposed to. There has been the occasional story of someone locking themself out of their house or room because they tried to pick it, then the key stopped working!
Well done. Welcome to the addiction! You’re off to a good start going with Covert Instruments. They are the best and when you expand your pick set you can’t for wrong with their Genesis set. It is the best in class pick set for under $30, or, for a little more, their Echelon set has it all.
I wish more beginners would buy a very basic but high quality kit like the FNG kit instead of those cheap chinese sets which have 30+ tools but the quality is so poor that it's hard to pick anything.
I agree! I did quite a bit of research before I bought the FNG kit. Even though it costs next to nothing, it's still the best kit out there for beginners. Especially since it's made by people who have passion for the hobby.
Took me a few minutes longer than you because I didn’t get that the seventh ‘pin’ wasn’t my problem. Once I got it I went out to the garage and cracked my Master in about 10 seconds 😮

Nice job man. Welcome to the locksport community
Thanks! I appreciate it. I'm looking to learning lockpicking and getting into residential/automotive locksmithing as well
The FNG kit is really the best on the market for a beginner. Good luck on your picking journey. 🍻

@@UnlockedLocksmith Very cool. I’m sure you’ll learn a lot. Lishis look really interesting so I’ll have to try one out sometime.
Just got the same kit to give it a shot. Very fun. The wave rake is super easy. Tension is key.
Yes it is! I think I have a bit more trouble with the rake at more times than using the hand pick, but they're both really fun.

Yeah, I got my set today and the practice lock was very easy to pick.
I’m sure when you started tensioning with your index finger at some point the raking became easier.
Good job.
