Ok... I've watched other reviews on the Sire/Marcus Miller M2, but this one convinced me... I need to get an M2... because of the quality of the sound and the flexibility of that pre-amp, it punches above its weight... damned nice bass for the price, imho. Time to start putting some money aside for one.

  • @rowlandstraylight

I think the hidden bonus of 24 frets is less body and thus less weight, which is kinda nice. I find fender style basses a bit heavy.
I was a fan of the old DX4/DX5 Ibanez soapbars but I quite like the sound of the new sr300 pickups.
The Sire's passive tone wins this for me though, it does something different than an active high shelf and I like to ride the tone control, particularly in small pub covers gigs where I have to swap genres fast and there isn't a sound tech to keep me in the mix.

I'd have murdered to get a bass of that quality for that price when I started out - my first bass was a right plank but still cost me 160 quid and it was rubbish. Mind you, 2 years later I upgraded and got myself a Hohner "Jack" which I absolutely loved and wished I'd never sold. I might pick one up on e-bay or somewhere as they're reasonably cheap I think. But you've gotta say, for the money, these are 2 great basses for the money - I currently play a Fender Jazz which was 5x what these cost and I love it but if I was to be asked about a starter bass for a couple of hundred quid to advise someone, you couldn't go far wrong with these 2.

I love andertons vids, but they dont make the basses sound very pleasing in their vids.

Yeah, I agree with theRealAV8r... the M2 is a damned fine bass for the money... I actually have a $1300 Fender P bass, and I actually like the sound of the M2 better, partially because of the flexibility available due to the pre-amp. I'm planning on getting an M2 in the very near future.

My only concern with both of these basses is how well the shape of them will age. The SR300 has a shape very reminiscent of the cars of 2000 to 2010 where everything was rounded. The Sire has a more modern rounded with edge look. Sure those cars looked great at the time, but these days they look terrible. Will be bass in 10 years end up looking like a Vauxhall Vectra? The classic shape guitars don’t have this issue

NecronN00b 82 interesting point. I found out that, with cars, you can use this rule of thumb to find out in they will age well or not: “Does the car have a clear shape, clear lines and overall a clear identity?” If yes, it will age well, if not, it won’t. Examples: VW Passat B2 (aged well in my eyes) and Hiunday Elantra 2002 (a miserable car)

This Ibanez Soundgear-shape has been around for like... 30 years or so. I remember seeing these Soundgears in the early '90s when I started playing. To me it's timeless.

I think it works fine. I’m not concerned with nonsense about what it looks like. I’m here to hear what the basses sound like with any and all eq tweaks, finger, pick and slap tones. No other reviewers are anywhere near as good as Lee and Nathan!! Plus great and entertaining personalities! Their shows are entertaining as well as informative. Not to mention they are both MONSTER players!!👍🏽😎🔊🔊

How is the Ibanez neck? Because some say it has a banana neck. I have an Ibanez S guitar and I love it, looking for something same in a bass. I play in drop A# tuning. Would it be able to handle thick string like that?
