So here’s another video from the “vault”. This time it’s a Thunderbolt recording from a few years back. This one is located by Wilkerson Elementary in Louisville. I remember running into traffic and barely having time to setup. I ended up parking almost under the siren itself. Too close actually. My main camera couldn’t capture the full siren without cropping part of it. I could change lenses? Too late…at exactly 12 Noon the siren roared to life. I ended up zooming in with my old Sony and edited them together. It’s a classic, no frills siren video; but at least an easy one to edit (which me and my computer miss).
Sirens in Louisville (Jefferson County) are tested every second Tuesday of the month at 12 Noon by MetroSafe. Tests are cancelled during severe weather, but will continue being tested during overcast skies or light rain. It’s a three minute, full-cycle test, and if you’re lucky you might get an attack cycle. But I don’t think they’ve tested in attack since the prehistoric age.
Enjoy, and as always comment, like, and subscribe for more. Thanks!

Bad news about this siren, during the construction of the new school they decided to take the siren down. After the construction was done, the Thunderbolt was gone, it was replaced by a brand new FS 2001-130.

I mean are we at all surprised that the blower on this siren is a little sick? Louisville clearly gave up on maintaining their thunderbolts years ago

The blower doesn’t sound too good to me…other than that it is awesome!

Awesome! May I ask if thing had ever went off for any reason during a school day? I can’t imagine what the students would say.

It's usually tested on a school day, but I've heard the schools are usually very attentive of when it gets tested.

Wow, a rare DSRX 60fps video. I haven't seen any 60fps videos from you other than this and your Providence 1003 video. I honestly can't even decide if 24 or 60fps is better to be honest. Awesome video!

I like the smoothness of 60, but I also love the cinematic feel of 24. My DSLR cameras have only been able to do 30fps so I usually settle there. But I used my old 60FPS camcorder on this recording so I ended up just exporting this one as is. I plan on doing more 60fps videos in the future so this won't be the last.

What's with the fsk tones again at the end of the video?

All sirens report back to the computer if it activated successfully or failed its called polling. The FSK you hear at the end is data being sent over the radio to a monitoring computer with a program that shows the status of a siren and other info. The siren can have current sensors on the chopper and blower and rotator this allows the FC controller to monitor the motors of a siren and send that data back to the computer to say chopper functioned properly and blower functioned properly and rotator functioned properly if not the map pin will be marked a color indicating failure along with details of failure in the pin description.
