  • This video was shot in 2015 when I was flying Ag Cats in NE Arkansas. This is a Grumman B model Ag Cat that was widened 14" so they could stuff a 500 gallon hopper in it. The Fat Cat mod is an STC and the modification required an entirely new frame and also a few other parts specific to the Fat Cat like the 14" wider center wing section and 41" wide gatebox at the bottom of the hopper. This was a good working plane but did not fly nearly as good as the standard B model because the 14" increase in width, only in the hopper area, made for some interesting flying characteristics. The Fat Cats were not as dynamically stable and if you took your hand off the stick for long it could go any direction. These were powered with 715shp Garrett TPE-331-6's

Love it, all it needs is a P&W Radial. Love the sound of those. We had our own dusters back in the day .

Cats have the same amount of wing surface area as an 802 at less than half the weight 😎

Great video! How would you compare the Grumman Ag Cat with the Air Tractor AT-802A? Have to believe there's a world of difference. Would you fly the Air Tractor in a heartbeat or are you sold on the biplane Grumman? BTW, if you ever are in southwest Iowa working and are up for beers on your downtime, they're on us. Love your videos.

Man it is hard to compare those two planes. They are from two different eras. The Ag Cat is a CAM 8 aircraft first off, check that out if you’ve never heard of it. The Cat was also the first purpose built aircraft for agricultural use. The 802 completely blows the cat away in every statistic except possibly the percentage of crashes that are fatal. 802 crashes are probably more often fatal vs an Ag Cat. I would most definitely pick the 802 over the Cat due to productivity and comfort.

The wings are standard B model wings however with the widened center section the wingspan is technically 14” longer than a standard B model.

Thoughts on the Air tractor 502XP?

The XP is the 502 that Air Tractor should have been producing since day one. Hands down better than a B model in every way. I flew two XP’s, the first one flew like sh*t and the tail buzzed in the turns with just the slightest pressure. I feel sorry for whoever ended up with that plane. The second one I flew (the one in the videos) flew like an absolute bat out of hell and was the best flying 502 I’ve flown.
