Thank you so much for this review, Phillip! Finally helped me settle if I was going to buy this or the 24GM. Will definitely be using your affiliate link for the Viltrox.
You had me at linear manual focus! The focus breathing difference is staggering. Fantastic video, keep up the great work!
When I did the focus breathing test I was in shock, the Viltrox really is quite the monster. Thanks Matt!
Wait, you are not the guy in the video?
Great review Phillip! Do you think it would be a great companion to Sigma 35mm f2 and Viltrox 85mm f1.8 II?
Great photos, thanks for sharing this!
Thank You, you're welcome! Superb lens!
Best tutorial and review ever Luv it !!!
Thanks Lucas, glad you liked it!
Not just amazed by the lens but also blown away by those banger shotsss!!!! Those are amazing!
The lens is awesome, thank you!
Great work Philip, the channel is growing nicely. Great work, keep them coming.
Thank You Michael, slowly but surely. I'll keep dropping, I like the lens reviews, I have fun with those.
@@PhillipSkraba I'm a Pentax using amateur photographer.... discovered your channel while looking into the DJI mini 2 to expand my work. You're doing a great job. Keep the Charisma and confidence, it works.
Thank You! The Mini 2 dug me a hole I'm trying to climb out of, I'm persistent though so I won't stop diversifying my channel and the content I drop, otherwise I'd go crazy just doing Mini 2 stuff and end up looking like Darren.
@@PhillipSkraba 😂 that last bit cracked me up. Sure you'll dig out fine. I may have discovered you on the mini but I've since been watching your other stuff. Your approach is awesome, well placed humour and you cover important aspects of your subject well. Maybe try digging in parallel to the drone. At the end of the day my interest in the drone search comes from my need to diversify from my photography and looking for something to help me put that story together. Enjoying most of your stuff now.... the art and the fart alike 😉
@@mikeontherock Yes, diversify, that's it. I know which direction I want to go in, I'm just stalling, it's frustrating. I'd like to teach about filmmaking as a whole, and have drone films as part of that, part of showing how to tell a story, what tools you need for it, lenses, drones, lights, rigs, etc. I like how McKinnon does it, he basically makes a video on what's interesting him, same goes with a few others, they're very spread out in terms of their filmmaking content.
Great Comparison Video Phillip!! Thank You!!
You’re welcome Doug, thanks!
So would the Viltrox lens have the same no lens breathing and fast focus on the Sony ZV-E10? Which is the camera I have and am learning on for now. Great review by the way, never heard of Viltrox till today.
Liked! Thanks for the review, i was looking for a pro 24mm lens that i can stick with for filmming, music clips, documentary and photoshoots, and the sony 1.4f was always in my mind, but after seen your video i think i'd save 1k$ and will go with Viltrox, i also have the Viltrox 85mm and it's awesome, so... say no more! Thanks :)
Never knew you shot fashion - those photos were amazing!
Oh yes, I shot fashion for many years.
Great video, we would love more videos about good lenses at a good price, good work and a great channel.
Thank You! I have a TON more lenses to go through, I'll be doing more of that because it keeps me happy!
Great!!
Can you tell Viltrox to make a 14mm F1.8?
I find 24mm just a touch too narrow as a wide angle. I'd be happier to drop from 35mm straight to 18mm
Just ordered one based on your review, Tks.
I was about to invest heavily for G masters but being a hobby photographer would not justify with such affordable options in the market. Cheers
Thank You Ricardo! This in my opinion, having used both a lot, is a better lens than the Sony GM. I wish it had an AF/MF button, but I've learnt to live without it and use a menu shortcut.
Love it bro 🎥💪🔥
It's a seriously good 24mm, totally blew me away!
Been struggling between Viltrox 24mm and Samyang 24mm…both f1.8, but the Samyang wins in weight and minimum focus distance….however bokeh might be a bit busy…do you have experience with the Samyang? It’s a bit more expensive but if price were not an issue would you get the Samyang or the Viltrox…your photos are dope, would love you to share your opinion….BTW Sony GM is on the right
Hi! I've actually used the Samyang a few times, and I've found the Viltrox to be MUCH more reliable, it just seems faster and more controlled, no hunting, no problems. The Viltrox is really well made and is generally a very classic lens when it comes to image and bokeh. Yep, right. The GM is a good lens, but the Viltrox wins hands down due to the lack of breathing. IF I had to buy one of those three right now, it would be the Viltrox, no hesitation. If you need a link, you'll find one in the description of this video 🤜🏻🤛🏻 I'm positive you'll love it!
Thanks for the super quick reply…thank you for your review too! I wish I could support you via affiliate links however I live in Taiwan so buying it from a camera store would just be much easier….thanks again for your opinion!
@@MrAraKara Absolutely no problem, let me know how you like it!
Amazing work
Thank You Robert!
Rewelacyjne zdjecia z tej sesji wewnatrz, swiatlo mistrzostwo!
Great review thank you very much. I have the G Master 24 1.4 lens. I don't think it's that great I think it's overrated I think in about selling it now and buying the viltrox. I don't use it that often so I really really really don't need it that badly so having the viltrox will help me when I need a 24mm. Again thank you for the video it was done well I appreciate it.
Thanks Philip! I think it's overrated too, the Viltrox does such an amazing job, it totally blew my mind when it comes to quality and functionality. I wish it had a AF/MF button, but I've learnt to live without that, especially as there is no breathing in the Viltrox which makes my filmmaking life a ton cleaner.
I have been looking for this lens for a while now and you convinced me to get it. You saved me 1K Bucks. By the way I already have 85 1.8 and 35 1.8.
I love the whole Viltrox line up, it’s excellent! The 50 is superb!
I love Viltrox gear. It’s a great budget friendly option for serious photographers and videographers that can’t afford high budget name brands. I’m also a fan of Yongnuo and Rokinon.
Me too, I'm a big fan of VIltrox and Weeylite! The quality of their products is excellent, just as I've demonstrated here, it's on par with, if not better in some ways than the Sony GM.
@@PhillipSkraba absolutely! I’ll never diss anyone for cheaping out with them. Great video my brother.
Thank You, I was happy to make it, I absolutely love this lens! I hope they drop more, like a 35mm f1.8. I'm actually waiting on their 85mm f1.8 lens, so I'll put that up against my Sony 85mm f1.8, I wonder if it'll be a similar story.
I just got it, its OK, not that fast and close range is bad, but its sharp and good quality. My fuji 16 1.4 can pretty much take macroshots.
Not sure which is which lens is which in the left and right comparison Phillip but the images on the right are the better quality for me bud in both clarity and sharpness. I have the Nikon NIKKOR 24mm AFS 1.4G ED and love it, along with my Nikon D810 it gets used for almost everything i do be it for Modelling/scenery videoing or Timelapses as its just such a versitile lens. Another great entertaining informative video, once again, thanks for taking the time to make and share it.😃
I had to look through them again, enlarge them, watch this on the 65" and really try to see a difference between them after you wrote you prefer the right hand side, just to double, triple check and I still can't see any noticeable difference between them, especially not one which would make me spend $1000 more. The Nikkors are very good lenses, always have been. I started off as a Nikon fan boy a good 22 odd years ago, I sold my D850, my last Nikon, when I switched to the Sony A7 series and haven't look back since, but I was frustrated with the video AF, that was a big part of my switch. Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
I couldnt agree with you more, no way would i pay the extra $1000 dollars for the Sony when you compare the two lense as the difference is extremley subtle but as i said, the images on the right just seemed to me to be a little bit better and i guess as you yourself have done going through hundreds of thousands of images over the years deciding which ones from each set to edit then you tend to notice tiny differences fairly quickly. I just think the images on the right have a bit deeper blacks and infact ive just screen printed and cropped a few of the images and then enlarged them to do a side by side comparrison (i think its a mini camera the images are of?) but if you crop them both tightly around the camera then zoom in 700% you can actually see the pixelation more on the left one than the right and the lines where the front of the camera casing join the body case dont look as clean, the same goes for the little remote controlled car, the wires and the connectors just look a touch sharper and cleaner on the image on the right...i know that sounds like nit picking which its absolutely not meant to be as thats a ridiculus extreme and nothing that couldnt be put right in editing, but it does show there is a very slight difference between the lenses but having said that, id have absolutely no hesitation in owning either lense whichever took the left and right images ;-) :-)
you're one of the few photography CZcamsrs that when I see the example shots I think oh wow that's actually a good photo
Thank You!!
Impressive ! For the price people should take it and ruuuunnn 🏃Awesome review Phil !
Thank You! Yes, it’s incredible for its price! I’d pick it up over the Sony every time 🔥
Hi, during the test, what was your camera settings regards AF Transition Speed and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity?
Thanks, very useful video!
I have mine on fast and standard. Thank You!
@@PhillipSkraba Many thanks! Greetings from Croatia!

Thank You, I really, really appreciate that.

Nice review thanks
Thanks Paul!
Hi! What do you think about the newest samyang 24mm f1.8 lens? Is it better or worst than this viltrox?
I actually contacted Samyang the other day about their AF Cine lenses, I'm quite interested in trying them out, might just take one off the shelf whilst at NAB, I'm sure they won't notice lol.
I recently ordered the Sony A74, but I have not received it yet, because there is a shortage. The reason I mention this, is because the A74 has focus breathing compensation, which currently only works for some Sony lenses, so for me focus breathing may actually be better for Sony lenses.
Today is February 3, 2022, and I noticed that your video was posted on October 1, 2021, so you may not have known about focus breathing compensation when you made your video. As far as I know the Sony A74 is the only Sony camera that has focus breathing compensation, but I think other cameras will have this feature in the future.
Sure, I know all about it in the a74. I use a variation of Sony cameras, and I don’t own the a74 yet, so it’s important it doesn’t breathe for me, also the price 😂
I'd love to know if you know how would this lens perform with the a6300 ? The autofocus would work?
Sure, the AF will still work Marcelo!
Greetings from China ! The Viltrox is even more compelling here, half the price of the Samyang, about $200 open box. I think I'll try one. Funny how the USB port reflects the company culture, Viltrox started with speed-boosters with USB ports.
Great job! Thanx! I have a Sony 28mm f2. Should I change it for Viltrox?
Thank You! I personally would. I had the 28mm and sold it about a year ago, it was an odd focal length. You’ll be very happy with this Viltrox.
Thanks Brother 😍❤️
You're welcome!
Such a good lens for that price. I think I dont want a GM anymore :) Thanks for the video, very usefull!
Trust me, I was in shock when I started using it a few months ago, the focus breathing itself was mind blowing for me, the fact it doesn't have it at all and the Sony is all over the place just amazed me. Great lens, well worth it's price!
sorry if I missed it, but how was the chromatic aberration with the viltrox?
haha, no, I missed that, it's actually not bad at all, wide open I don't really notice it, maybe once on the shoot I had, but nothing a little Adobe didn't fix in a second.
@@PhillipSkraba awesome! Good to know, thank you!
Great comparison…u really made me save alot but if theres a choice to get one sony gm lens….which would it be?
The 24-70GM, that's a great one! The primes though, Viltrox is what I'd go with.
I just got an a6600 and purchased the viltrox 23mm t 1.5 fine lens. I'm new to video/photography. Would this lens and the one you're reviewing be pretty similar?
Well, the one you're looking at is a aps-c lens, this is a full frame lens. I have never tested any of their non full frame lenses, so I can't comment I'm afraid.
@@PhillipSkraba gotcha. Still learning about my gear. I appreciate the response!!
4:16 are the lenses inversed relative to the titles on top???
Hi Igor, nope. As you can see the Viltrox is filming the Sony on the left, then the Sony is filming the Viltrox on the right. The Sony on the right has a big problem with breathing, one massive point for the Viltrox.
I owe you a VERY big beer.
I LOVE beer!!
Ok I'm convinced. getting the viltrox and you just earned yourself a subscriber 😅
The Viltrox is awesome Kuba!
@@PhillipSkraba I already own the 85mm 1.8. and to be honest I use it quite a lot.
That's a great one too! The 24mm is one I can highly recommend, I use it just about every day.
@@PhillipSkraba i'm a long telephoto shooter. After getting sigma 105mm f1.4 and tamron 70-180 f2.8 I just can't stand my sigma 16 &30 f1.4 duo for apsc. It's not that I don't like wide lenses. I do own sony 10-18 and absolutely love it either on apsc and ff (acts as 14,5mm) but those two sigmas just don't speak to me. But to complicate things even further I do own a 7artisans 25mm f1.8 for apsc and really like it. So how it will be with viltrox we are going to find out this Saturday 😅 thanks for your recommendation though 😊
I have the Sony G 20mm 1.8 for video, but I fancy the 24mm focal length for photos. Big enough difference?
Oh yes, at that focal length it makes a huge difference!
@@PhillipSkraba Massive prefer 24mm over 20mm for almost everything 😭 I just bought the 20mm for some breathing room for catalyst, but now I'm cropping everything 20%🤣
hahaha, I’d sell it and pick one of these up! 20mm is something I rarely use, 16mm sure, but then I jump to 24mm 😂
@@PhillipSkraba maybe you're right, I won't rush to sell, I'll probably keep both and then decide based on usage. This lens would live on my A7C so not many custom buttons, so it's a shame the Viltrox doesn't have a manual focus switch
Yes, that is my one complaint, hut I’ve learnt to live with it.
you can turn on and off auto focus in sony cameras. Ive set it to C1 button. So, it wont be a problem.
I have all my C buttons set up, so that extra one button on the lens would be awesome, I see that on some of the Z versions they've started to introduce it.
What’s a drone channel
A drone channel is usually a channel where the presenter is holding a drone in his profile photo.
Game. Match. Point.

How is the continous AF of this lens for photo?
Fantastic, I use it for photos a lot!
Many thanks! @@PhillipSkraba
As you said you saved me 1000$ I owe you a beer 🍻
haha, I'll accept it!
Great video - it's funny how some people spend thousands on a camera body and cheap out on lens. Lens are so important.
Lenses are very important, and also carry on from body to body!
@@PhillipSkraba I would even budget for a good lens (if not coupled with the body) before getting the camera body. It makes a big difference.
Ok I'm buying this thing
I use it everyday till this very day, it’s excellent.
You are a real Salesman… 😄👍🏻
haha, thanks Wolf, just telling it how it is.
let's goooo I just bought it
You're going to love it!
People are duped into thinking they need the image stabilization; when in reality, and for the most part you don't need stabilization on fast wide angle primes unless you are doing sky photography or lower shutter speed to convey motions. It really is a waste of money for that extra premium for the most part. What is important factor in fast wide angle primes are edge sharpness wide open.
Phil, you just saved me $1000
You’re welcome!
The right side is viltrox in my opinion , because viltrox bring a huge vignettes when you take a picture
I'm afraid not. You can even see me holding the Sony in the mirror on the right. They have pretty similar vignetting, but the Sony is a touch worse.
Do you and Darren even fly drones anymore ? Maybe more DJI mini 2
Not recently no, I’m waiting on the Mavic 3. I know Darren loves flying his still though. I take mine out once in a while just to charge it up, dust it off. I have so many more things I want to do at the moment, the Mini 2 is at the bottom of my list.
@@PhillipSkraba Darren hardly does drone flying either , we want more drones less lenses that cost too much
I’m afraid my channel is about filmmaking, not solely drones. A good lens carries a serious price tag I’m afraid, so will the Mavic 3. I’m sure there are other channels out there that concentrate only on drones, don’t worry.
@@PhillipSkraba who
@@charlesdove1345 Oh gosh, I really don't know. I watch McKinnon, Lingberg, Matti, they all do drones, so maybe them.
Good Good Good comparing 🇹🇭
Good morning, thank you!
I got the batis 25mm from eBay instead.
It’s a good one, I had it for a moment before the 24GM, sold it, didn’t really enjoy it for filmmaking, more of a photographers lens for sure 👌🏻
The price gap is about what you would expect given the specs of the lenses. It is chasing diminishing returns but its there and to be expected.
f1.8 v.s. f1.4 is quite a big difference in maximum aperture. Plus you have OSS and more manual controls on the GM.
6:07 is the only shot where it’s obvious. But who cares. Great video!
Yes, well worth the price!
@@PhillipSkraba I literally just bought one on Ebay used mint for 250 USD!
I Just switched from Canon. I've been a canon shooter for 20 years and I just didn't like where the R and RF system went and they totally made the A7IV for the last of us holding out on switching. Key reasons, finally touch screen on the Sony, EVF finally looks good, grip is larger, DOESN't overheat!, smaller prime lens options, the best hybrid shooter camera, control buttons finally make sense, the menu design change is so much easier, etc. Pretty stoked, not going to hate on Canon though, a camera is a tool us artist use to express our vision and make a living.

1:21... you probably meant "twenty-four centimeters", didn't you ?
Yes I do Gilles, thanks for that!
Yes, the 24 is a good choice, but when it comes to 35mm, the choices are reversed because the Sony 1.8 is better than the Viltrox 35.
I don't agree with that, except for one thing, minimum focus distance, the Sony wins that one.
Or use the super 35 crop
Man, you just sold one piece!
You are going to LOVE this lens, thanks for the support!
You could spend $1,400 but why??
I remember my old Nikon 35 mm film camera.
Digital SLRs changed everything.
Amazing product for what it is. The cost to quality just gave Sony the middle finger as we like to say.
Well, the GM is a good lens, but in my opinion the Viltrox is even better, for 1/3 of the price. I started off with Nikon and Pentax, my last 35mm camera was a Nikon F5, that was such a beast, loved it. Digital has changed everything, yes, a total shift, sometimes bad, sometimes good.
@@PhillipSkraba I honestly couldn't tell the difference in your photos. I mean there is the 0.4 f stop difference where in very specific instances could play a role, but unless clicking f stops, and swapping from auto to manual on the lens are a deal breaker must have, I could not see spending the extra money. The differences are so minute, that for anyone who isn't making a living from it, it makes no sense. I salute Viltrox for upping the game here.
Much like FIMI for bringing a sub $500 drone to market that gives DJI a run for their money. I am waiting to get my first drone, and it will most likely be the FIMI x8 SE 2022. It has a Sony half inch sensor and remote ID. It also like the 2020 will lack geo fencing which I prefer. I have heard from more than one pilot that the DJI restricted maps don't always line up with reality. I am a responsible flyer, so I don't need a nanny. You should check them out. I think you might be surprised.
@@dan8402 I agree with You Daniel, Viltrox really did an amazing job here, I was especially in shock with the lack of focus breathing.
When it comes to drones, well, I'm afraid I'm a DJI man, and it's not solely because of the quality of image or build, but rather that I trust them, I trust their software, it's the best out there. I refuse to fly a Fimi again, the only competitor I'd ever give a second thought to is Autel. I do however push drones past their limits, DJI can handle that, and that gives me peace of mind, not something you can put a price on. Maps, never, ever had a problem with them, and I've flown in some questionable places, well, maybe once next to a military space, kind of locked me out (for good reason), luckily I got it back down on the ground.
@@PhillipSkraba Also the DJI refresh program is second to none. I have never seen another company with a support program even close. 😎
Even though I will never buy one, (scrub loser iPhone shooter) I threw a like on this video for the work you put in as someone might benefit from this.
Thank You! Never say never, I've bought so many things I said I'd never buy 😂
Try the Samyang 24mm f1.8 with great IQ and better features than boththe Sony and the Viltrox.
Yeah, but it's Samyang, I'm not sure if I'd be able to wear that.
