  • Radford's beginning is in the heart of pioneer history, where William Ingles and his wife, Mary Draper Ingles, established a ferry, store and tavern on the New River.
The city's Riverway connects recreation opportunities through the heart of downtown. Radford University's campus is located downtown, with 9900 students and 150 undergraduate and graduate programs.
The annual Highlanders Festival in October brings together students and townspeople for music, games and entertainment, honoring the region's Scots Irish roots.

I've only been here since 2007, and in 2022 this seven-year-old video already has a lot to be nostalgic about, including people and places that have passed on since it was made. (Wish the film had more IDs of the individuals who are speaking -- and some credit for the filmmakers and funders.)
David Horton, one of the first narrators, is identified with a Chamber of Commerce label, so maybe the video was a Chamber project. But David is also an administrator at the University, a long time DJ on the campus radio station, and has been mayor for a couple of terms since this film was made. In 2022 he ran for re-election unopposed, except for possible write-in candidates.
The retail renovation attention in the east end of the city at the time of this film shifted farther west, farther from the university and old downtown, where retail businesses have come and gone...
No mention in this video of attempts to replace a big factory employer ("the foundry") that closed for good, or of any employers in the city other than the university.
Maybe that was the unspoken message of this film... to attract employers, not just tourists, although tourism is a direction the city might be going in, with improvement in a museum and visitor center in the west/central part of town, along with relocation there of the Saturday farmers market, more recreational development along the riverfront, and lots of planning for things that might come next.
Meanwhile, that Monday night Bluegrass jam session is on its third home since the film was made. (The River City Grill was already gone for a couple of years when music gathering places took a bad hit from the pandemic.)
The university is on its 3rd new president since the film was made. Seems to be a nice guy; wishing him all the best.
The local coffee shop mentioned in the video is long gone, but two others have sprung up. College towns & cities are like that. I have lived in a half dozen of them, and I'm sticking around Radford to see what happens next.

imho the copy of the voice overs really addressed this - the video could've shown more of town. still really enjoyed this video of my home tho.

Interesting William and Mary Draper Ingles are mentioned about, but nothing in the video .. not even the monument at the cemetary or the old Ingle farm that is still there. Maybe they will go back and edit this.

Because it was a railroad town and that’s where the train would come in and drop its freight and a lot of people there transporting goods

Yeah, y'all come on down to Pulaski, Radford, Dublin, and see what happens to the people when the state government spends 90% of its tax revenue keeping the DC, Alexandria going at state of the art. The roads through this area are not maintained, law enforcement is Barney Fife with a SWAT team, the jobs have long gone to China although the original owners are rolling in cash, major drug problems in the region and yet no one is smart enough to band these people together to get more state and fed money to make life better. The nearest real jobs are 35 miles away. The last good employer in the region, Xaloy, has announced they're closing down this year. Pulaski County has one of the highest opioid abuse rates in the country. Great place to live if you can live on the outskirts and have money. If not, you can line up at the corner to get your oxy's like everyone else.
