      I thought peritonitis was typically caused by a ruptured appendix ?? ... it being an inflammed/infected peritoneum, multiple sites can cause perotinitis ... whatever the site however, it can become infected exponentially and quickly lead to sepsis and death, especially if it ruptured.
      The appendix is a more common site and easily id’d at autopsy (I imagine) ...

      Fully agree. It irks me when people blather about “the good old days.” As long as there has been people, there has been injustice, corruption and lies. Hollywood isn’t especially corrupt. Go to any town and you’ll find the same behavior. It’s often less overt but it’s there. Case in point: the Murdaugh murders in South Carolina. One corrupt family who ruled the small town they were in and were rarely held accountable because they had money and power for generations.

    Fatty Arbuckle had comedic genius. His silent films hold up even today. His family was important to California. San Francisco was the city for getting away from it all, for the LA scene. Parties were the way to connect. Virginia and her friend/manager couldn't afford not to attend. Because things were couched in innuendo and delicate wordings, the mystery grew. There was every indication that she suffered from a botched abortion. Clyde Arbuckle was his brother and known California historian. San Jose was his specialty.

    Maude Delmont specialty was blackmailing those in Hollywood with false accusations of sexual assault and when Rappe fell ill she expected quite an unanticipated payday. That's when she pounced as the actress lay in pain for several days having tagged along with Virginia Rappe who she met only a day or two before the party. What proved lethal to Rappe was she had a history of painful attacks due to Cistitus when she drank at times and would often tear at her clothing in reaction. Though Arbuckle wanted to call a doctor immediately he was talked out of it due to this and even Rappe may have thought it was just another bad episode. The DA Brady had deep political ambitions and hoped to run for Governor after convicting Arbuckle but what was worse was he likely knew the truth all along about his innocence. Indeed it was Brady that keep Delmont from going onto the stand during the three Trials and her only appearance was in a Inquest into her death where she could spin her tales freely. Delmont was the witness that never testified in Court even though she was the only one accusing Arbuckle of assault claiming Rappe was her closest friend which was a lie unto itself. By the last Trial Delmont had absconded and the truth about her sordid schemes was out as well as the machinations of the DA who's political aspirations were buried deeper than Arbuckle's career. The Hays Code at it was called came mostly from a drumbeat by Religious Groups that were in charge of Local-State Film Boards who weren't liking what they saw on film. These Boards banned films in their areas for "immorality" like brief nudity in a Tarzan film or implied sex even within a marriage on celluloid. The Code even lasted even on TV well into the 1960s was why there were two beds not just one for couples and the toilet was the final frontier with only All in the Family hearing it flushed but unseen at first.

      @Lowmanification Před 2 lety +1

      So were Delmont's statements entered into record as evidence? If so, why can't the defense get a subpoena and force her to testify on the veracity of her claims? If not, how did they even have enough evidence to bring this to trial? As a follow up, why was the case not thrown out once it was clear that all of the evidence was fabricated and the DA disbarred?
      Sorry for all the questions, but you seem to be fairly knowledgeable about the case and I am just having a hard time wrapping my head around how this went through 3 separate trials on such weak evidence.

    • @richardmattingly7000
      @richardmattingly7000 Před 2 lety +1

      To Lowm... Calling a witness to the stand must be done by either the Plaintiff or the Defense only and Delmont wasn't by either side. The DA didn't need to for two reasons since the Inquest where she Testified like a Grand Jury only hears one side not both. Indeed Delmont could weave her lies in front of them with near immunity since those hearing it findings could only recommend charges not question there validity. Indeed Delmont played her role for all it was worth in the Press so much before the first Trial that the DA was certain it would lead to a conviction. By not calling her to the stand he avoided giving Arbuckle Defense the chance to tear her apart and it was a gamble he won at first. Even though his Defense had every right to call Subpoena Delmont and treat her as a hostile Witness they knew she would just repeat her lies and the publicity she garnred was a daunting obstacle to overcome. The DA began the the first Trial confident that the Press and its lurid tales did all the work for him and looked forward to riding it into the Governors Office afterwards. The first Jury deadlocked over convicting Arbuckle, but by the second Trial which deadlocked over setting him free begun to swing in his favor. seeing his political ambitions going up in flames the DA went after Arbuckle once more but by then Delmont lies and how she made money thru blackmail was out and other witness finally said the DA had threatened them with consequences if they didn't go along so much so that the third Jury spent more time writing a note exonerating Arbuckle than deliberating. Not calling someone like Delmont to the stand on either side isn't unprecedented since Witnesses can't show up and be expected to be heard unless either side asked for them. Only in Civil Case can someone be compelled to give a Deposition that might work against them since they can be questioned by both sides not just one. What Arbuckle did plead guilty to in the travesty was buying the liquor for the party during Prohibition and much to his credit Buster Keaton gave him work afterwards and support during the Trials since he knew the comedian was Innocent. Indeed during the scandal no credible accusations against Arbuckle being a predator came forward since in Hollywood its an open secret what an actor etc. was in their private lives and Studios only cared if everyone involved keep quiet by all involved since whether it was hiding a pregnancy out of wedlock or paying for the damage they caused in a hotel suite everyone lost if the Press rode it for all it was worth.

    Arbuckle's last film was called "Tomalio". He finished it a day or two before he died. I have seen it. Arbuckle did a lot of physical comedy in this film. Physical comedy being Roscoe's trademark. This may have led to the Heart attack that took his life. My interest in this film comes from the fact that my grand Uncle Clyde Veaux, (and my middle namesake). A prolific Broadway actor, singer, dancer who worked with the likes of Ginger Rodgers and Ethel Merman, made his only film appearance with Roscoe in Tomalio.

      @@chudleyflusher7132'don't even'??? Don't even what, point out a known issue in the US? Healthy food is more expensive to make and takes far more time to cook and prepare. Parents working multiple jobs do not have that extra time because it is legal to not pay a living wage in this country. The school system provided breakfast and lunch are also not usually the picture of healthy meals either, if you want to blame someone for children's health. There are also things called food deserts, common in low income areas, so just because an city or suburb might have 'plenty' of grocery stores in your view does NOT mean that they are accessible or affordable to the entire population. How would you know they aren't trying their best to be healthy? Tons of US families spend their income on treats for their family, why are you judging that they are able to spend some of their food assistance on 'junk' food in the same way?
      As a fat person and an RN, Arbuckle is still not the average weight at ALL and we know it isn't healthy. It isn't the death sentence that people make it out to be because we now know how much genetics plays into our long term health and likelihood of diabetes, heart disease, etc. Far more deadly for fat people is the fatphobia, because it leads to self hatred, shame, disordered eating, mental illness, and things like refusal to go to medical appointments because of the judgement and treatment experienced. Mickey Atkins is a great channel to learn about what diet culture and medical fatphobia can do to people- and she is just a lovely human (and therapist!).
      There are very, very few elementary school kids that weigh more than him. I'm almost his height, and based on my build he looks to be close to 350 lbs or more. Maude Delmont ran a Badger Game in which she would get chorus girls to go to Hollywood parties and have the girls claim that a star/producer/director had “raped” a girl. Then hush money would be collected from the victim and distributed by Delmont to her girls. Her nickname was “Madame Black,” and the district attorney told her “if you don’t testify that it was Arbuckle’s fault-we’ll railroad YOU!”
