    Having access to food, storage of farmed supplies, fabrication capabilities; these are all things we need a base for. But what if you could have all of these within a completely mobile base you can move around wherever you need? Enter the Cyclops, our adorable three-man but piloted by one man submarine that could. So with a couple of exceptions, we can actually outfit a Cyclops to cover almost every need of a typical base. Today I’m going to walk you through a simple Cyclops mobile base setup to show you how much you can take with you using just the Cyclops.
    If you want to see the Cyclops being used as a mobile base, be sure to check out Season 2 of my Subnautica gameplay!

    Here is what Steam has to say about Subnautica:
    Subnautica is an underwater adventure game set on an alien ocean planet. A massive, open world full of wonder and peril awaits you!
    You have crash-landed on alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful.
    After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft knives, lights, diving gear, and personal water craft. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items.
    Build bases on the sea floor. Choose layouts and components, and manage hull-integrity as depth and pressure increase. Use your base to store resources, park vehicles, and replenish oxygen supplies as you explore the vast ocean.
    What happened to this planet? Signs abound that something is not right. What caused you to crash? What is infecting the sea life? Who built the mysterious structures scattered around the ocean? Can you find a way to make it off the planet alive?
    The ocean teems with life: Use the ecosystem to help you. Lure and distract a threatening creature with a fresh fish, or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid gnashing jaws of roaming predators.
    Build a Pressure Re-Active Waterproof Nanosuit, or PRAWN Suit, and explore extreme depth and heat. Modify the suit with mining drills, torpedo launchers, propulsion cannons, grappling hooks and more.
    As the sun goes down, the predators come out. The ocean is unforgiving of those caught unprepared in the darkness. Areas that are safe to explore during the day become treacherous at night, but also reveal a beauty that those who hide from the darkness will never see.
    Cave systems wind below the sea bed, from dark claustrophobic passages to caverns lit by bio-luminescent life and burning-hot lava flows. Explore the world below the ocean floor, but watch your oxygen levels, and take care to avoid the threats lurking in the darkness.

    I like to think of myself as a practical man. I have static bases with scanners, battery chargers and food farms in strategic locations for resupply and storage of excess material. I take my Cyclops wherever i go with a pravler or a seamoth in tow depending on the objective at hand.
    My fears of the deep sea are the strongest i have, this game is a true horror game for me, being inside the Cyclops brings me comfort. I also like to play with buttons.

      @tiberiumcapoo5093 Před 5 lety +45

      I usually just make 1 base that I go to everytime, powered by solar panels and thermal plants (Usually close to the grand reef or the safe shallows, since they always have thermal vents and lava geysers, not to mention some basic resources I can easily gather just outside my base). I hate making multiple bases, since making them in the first place is a pain. Then I turn my Cyclops in to a sort of base. No fabricators, chargers, anything that uses power because I don't like having my Cyclops getting drained and possibly getting my ship stranded in the middle of the ocean. But I do make a farm and up the storage for resources.

    • @hohtari1
      @hohtari1 Před 5 lety +28

      My main bases are located in safe shallows very near to lifepod 5, in the SW grass fields near lifepod 17, and in the Giant tree cove in lost river. Powered by solar panels, heat sources and nuclear reactors. This setup gives me a clear and compact routes to most areas of the map and safe places to sort my shit out at.
      I dislike long travel, i like to have a place to seek cover from nearby. Especially when leviathans or the lost river are involved.
      In addition to that i have tiny scanner bases powered by bioreactors wherever needed for finding databoxes and materials. I have a locker with the components at the ready for quick deployment.

I'm actually tempted to give it a go, after thoroughly beating the game in a 300 hour run wherein I did just about everything one could possibly do, and hadn't died since around hour 150, so I know I could handle it. I just really don't trust the game to not randomly bug out on me and delete my save for some BS reason. I know how to back up my saves, but that defeats the purpose. I don't really see any good solution.
      That said, I've been playing Don't Starve lately and am actually quite enjoying the real sense of danger that its hardcore nature gives, but that game seems to be a lot less prone to game-breaking bugs.

    MSG, I found a way to have the cyclops to be a 99% mobile base. So there would be thermal vents around so get the upgrade for the cyclops "thermal reactor" so you can recharge its own power instead of making a base and recharge. It can also work in the lava zone(s)

    • @rsajay6256
      @rsajay6256 Před 5 lety +158

      Not mad about the coffee machine's rate of hydration tho... Personally water purifier, and 👉🏽 salt 👈🏽 Salt + tube coral = 1x bleach. 1x bleach = 2x disinfected water from the fabricator, and 1 bleach takes less space in your escape pod storage than 2 bottles of water 😎. Before you even get a water purifier aim for as much salt as possible. Tube coral is easy, you can hack at the tube anywhere, not just the plates, and it NEVER runs out. Salt is common on the seabed near the seaweed forests, and in the red grass areas. Also, once you can upgrade to the thermal knife, cured (salted) fish is less important, as the knife kills and cooks fish. Going deep? Catch a few live Reggies or Peepers and take them along, and hotknife them when you need to eat, they give +food & a small +water as opposed to -water for salted fish. New game & desperate for food & water? Eat the green kelp samples for food & water, but be quick as it goes off pretty fast. Once you have growbeds and Bulbo trees / marble melons your worries are over. Oh and another interesting thing, if you're in an area with a lot of Reggies or Peepers, catch them and let them go by your habitat, they'll stay there and you can utilise them later. Oh and never ever get into your Cyclops if you have a cuddlefish following you. Your little waterbro can get stuck in the sub & die, and can also mess up the clipping of your Cyclops, causing you to fall through the sub to the seabed with indoors physics pretty much shagging your game as it happens more and more often after the first time.

    Note you CAN get infinite power on your cyclops. For each Efficiency mod you make things cost less. So instead of costing you 200 to charge a powercell of 200, you can make it 180, at a 10% discount. The effect stacks however it means you have to constantly cycle the cells, due to your only getting the discounted % back as returns

  • @taurussoberano4813

    Just an advise, energy cell recharger inside the cyclops is a little useless, it drains the same energy amount from your cyclops to recharge the same at the power cells, the easiest way i like to do is get the thermal reactor module and park the ciclops right above a hotspot, theres also one on safe area, so you can recharge your power cells directly from the cyclops power cells bay.

      Get the Thermal charge Mod for the cyclops then just park on or near a heat source (lava or thermal vent). Voila all your stuff is charged at about the rate of a single solar cell, but more than fast enough to charge your batteries and powercells and keep your vehicles charged.

      You can do one better. Have the thermal upgrade on the prawn-suit and give the prawn 1 empty (or partially charged) powercell and walk it to/in some hot water. Especially useful for thermal vents that the cyclops can't reach (at least not the 60 degrees Celsius part). Take some extra empty cells on your person and swap them as you go.

    If you have the THERMAL upgrade for the Cyclops and you are down at the ACTIVE LAVA, or any other hot zone FTM, you can charge power cells inside the Cyclops and the heat will recharge the Cyclops own power cells. So you have pretty much an unlimited supply of energy onboard.
    Also, I recommend building all the basic upgrades (the ones that need the station in the moonpool), so you will never need any other base at all.

  • @forehand101
    @forehand101 Před 4 lety +2

    My own version of the Cyclops Base is similar, but has notable differences. First was a lot less lockers, I never once had to make extra lockers outside of the entrance and locker area except for specific things I'll get into in a second. Also, I kept one resource per locker except for a few that were labeled PRECURSOR or CREEPVINE which contained anything I could make or get from that; SILVER contained wiring kits also and COPPER had copper wire too. Used prawn suit to gather materials if I ran low.
    From the control area , I added a standing locker on the right side of the sub next to the big hatch for extra or unused equipment like propulsion cannon, fins, the radiation suit after I fixed the leaks. I also added a lab counter on the left side of control room behind the hatch for decoration.
    Just past the hatch, I had my single person bed with two pots with the chinese plants on either side of the it and an Aurora poster above it too, all on the left side. On right side of this area, I had two standing lockers, one for misc tech and the other for health, food, and water. Alongside these where a fabricator, modification station, a battery charger, and a power cell charger. A health kit thing remained mostly untouched above the hatch side of this small area.
    In the main area of the ship, I had a trash can and a coffee maker (mostly decoration) on the front left side of the ship, vending machine on the front right (also decor), aquarium on the elevated part near the middle hatch across from the access for storage and upgrade for the prawn suit, and a grow bed filled with the marblemellon plants for food in front of the creature decoy thing. A storage locker next to the creature decoy held all my batteries, power cells, and of course the decoys. On the walls of this area was misc posters and a radio that looked more like a router because of how it interacted with the wall.
    Last thing I had was that kitty poster above the engine. I had the thermal upgrade in the cyclops so I can charge power cells and batteries in heat areas without worrying about power. Other upgrades were the shield, sonar, efficiency, depth, and I can't remember what else, but probably the prawn repair one. Never used the fire suppression system tho, never went full speed and used the shield to avoid attacks.
    Overall, my cyclops became my home. I had only one base the whole game that I stopped using after I got the cyclops; I never even really made a temp base although I had two lockers dedicated to such a thing.
    Temp base included a single corridor, hatch, battery and power cell chargers, glass for windows, two flood lights, and it was all powered by a thermal generator and one of the power conduits if it was needed.

However, once you have the scans and materials you can also use the Seamoth's Solar module, the Prawn Suit Thermal module, and the Cyclops Thermal module as ways to recharge power cells. 3 years and I still find new stuff!

  • @CriticalRoleHighlights

    I always use my Cyclops as a mobile base. All I do when I start out is I stock up on rare materials (uranite, ruby, silver, nickel ore, etc.) and materials you can only find in the Kelp Forests, such as Seed Clusters, Creepvine Samples, and Stalker Teeth. Also, you have to see to it that you actually plant the vines as often as you can or you'll kick yourself if you ever need some Fiber Mesh or Bleach for whatever reason and have to go all the way back to the Safe Shallows just to get 4 or 5 of them.
    I also see to it that I build all the upgrades I need for the Cyclops before I start moving towards the lava zones. The Thermal Recharge upgrade is invaluable early on since it can be used as early as the Safe Shallows at the small underwater volcanoes.
    The biomes in-between Inactive Lava Zone and Safe Shallows have a tendency not to have a lot of the stuff you require in order to build bases and other things you need further on into the story.

      Critical Role Highlights Hey what's the current state of the cyclops with regards to the damage it takes and it's survivability? I see lots of people complain about it but they're from a few months back

    a bit late to the thread but thought I'd point out a few things. first you can place things much more densely than that, I have four lockers, radio, batt charger, trash, mod station, and more just up in the front section. Second, the best source of food and water is bulbo trees, just a row of three pots will keep you permanently fed and watered. (tho you may want 4) I have a base with a huge peeper aquarium (5 level) and water filter and that keeps my cyclops lockers stoked with salted peepers and bottled water for prawn excursions, so I have no need to keep live fish onboard. You can also place 6 lockers up front beside your fabricator, and four pots for edible flora variety at the VERY rear of the ship on the upper level. (to keep melons, taters, bulbo, and lantern) Thanks for the idea on where to place the bed, that works well. Another good suggestion is to keep a full set of fully charged ion cells handy "just in case".

    what the Cyclops lacks in order to become a "main base" is power generation and water filtration, plus some invisible walls on top of most.. well, walls, make the wall mounted furniture float mid-air and that's a -1000 style points to me.
    My cyclops just has some energy cell chargers underneath the engine room (mostly for the looks, I don't use them to charge the cells as it just doesn't work), classic interior planter in front of the decoy storage, two medkits (one on the bridge and one in the locker rooms, right behind the front door), aquarium with a bench in front of it that's facing 3 vases and a display with some fancy screenshots and a standing locker on the leftmost side to house my gear.
    Under the engine room I also have a wall locker with some beacons and light wands to highlight some areas even though I never use it, but it's still piece of mind.

    That is way to much storage if you manage to fill all that up in survival I'll be very surprised

      I have filled that much storage up many times in survival. Just takes time and good placement of a scanner room.

    The Cyclops can't do quite everything, but, TBH, you can easily use the PRAWN and portals to quickly zip to a shallows base for access to a moon pool, if you have any sense. Upgrade the PRAWN jets, use grappler, and mount thermal module, and you can quickly travel in style. It is also a good idea to deploy beacons at the portal arches.

    Ion Power Cell, I didn't know this exist. Is this experiment or normal mode?
