    The 2024 Bangladesh general election is right around the corner and it is raising eyebrows - not only for the bloody turn to protests by Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh National Party against the alleged excesses of PM Sheikh Hasina, but also the curious interest the US has suddenly developed in the country. In Ep 1341 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains all that’s going on in Bangladesh in the run-up to elections, and why India is keeping an eye on its neighbourhood.

    As a Bangladeshi, my suggestion to India would be to avoid doing things that makes 90% of Bangladeshis to turn against it. Indians might be concerned about Indian interests, however, if it doesn't align with the interest of the people of Bangladesh, all these would simply make Bangladeshis more hostile towards India.

    Mr Gupta has surprisingly missed the persecution of Mohammad Yunus. The international media (The Economist, BBC etc) has been discussing it for many months. Dr Yunus had indicated his intention of starting a political party, and all hell broke loose from Sheikh Hasina (I think he was being harassed since several years as well because of some Grameen Bank matters). Along with his Nobel and international stature, he is also a friend of the Clintons long before the Nobel (and appears in both their autobiographies if I recall correctly). I have been noting increasing American comments on Bangladeshi politics/democracy since this political persecution started on Dr Yunus. If I recall correctly, The Economist also had an interview with Sheikh Hasina a couple of months ago during her visit to the US.

      @JohnSmith-vn8dm Před 8 měsíci +23

      Unfortunately what has happened is that a few pro-islamist/pro-Pakistani people have reached prominent positions guiding policy on Bangladeshi in American thinktanks like the Atlantic Council. This is a problem confined to the American left and their associated thinktanks and not the more right wing groups in America. But the Biden admin is leftist and their policy is closely guided by many of these thinktanks, which is why they are aggressively going after the Awami League and promoting the BNP.
      If there has been a single region in the world where my country's policy has failed and been immoral to the greatest extent, it is no doubt the Indian Subcontinent, so I am disappointed to see this. We were already responsible for the genocide in Bangladesh and anyone in the State Department with half a brain should have understood the history would already have made the Awami League paranoid about any US involvement. Not to mention the obvious hypocrisy when it comes to the rigged Pakistani elections. But there are very few South Asia experts let alone Bangladesh experts, and barely anyone understands the regions history. A few bad actors with pro-islamist leanings can easily shape policy in this environment. In my opinion India should work very hard to share narratives from the refugees of 71 and educate the world.
      If there is one positive to all this, its that the US and India have established cooperation in the region and both our countries have common purpose in keeping CCP influence at a minimum. If the US and India each supports opposite ends of the political spectrum to a mild degree, that's an effective way of keeping Chinese influence out. It's like a hedging strategy that makes you money whether the stock goes up or down. But this only works when neither side causes instability (current risk if US support for BNP/islamists goes too far) and there is trust between both parties. The will of the Bangladeshi people also needs to be respected as much as possible, though this is difficult in an environment like Bangladesh where Chinese interference to create anti-Indian attitudes is already at an extreme level and political arrests disrupt the electoral process. Anyway we will have to see if the US has the restraint and common sense to follow this mutually beneficial approach (hypocritical as it may be compared to policy on Pakistan), or if they go overboard like everyone fears.

Soon after the war he was cornered in Army and remain powerless till 7th November 1975 long after the assassination of Father of the nation (15th Aug1975).

    Mr. Gupta, you are wrong on all your accounts. Bangladesh got independence in December 1971. Sheihk Mujib declared his dictatorship in 1974. He banned all political parties except one BAKSAL and closed all news papers except four and declared himself as life President. He was assasinated by his once very loyal followers in the army who became disgruntled by his brutal dictatorial behaviour. Ziaur Rahman had no role in it. After some turmoil, Ziaur Rahman assumed power, restored democracy and invited Sheikh Hasina to come home from India to restore the Awami League. Since taking power in 2009, Hasina is behaving like a murderous dictator. There was a mutiny in the army and 70-80 of the most promising officers were killed. It is assumed that the mutiny was engineered by Hasina with the help of RAW to neutralise the army. India wants her to be in power for ever. Two of the following elections were rigged. The first one in 2014 was rigged openly with the connivance of Sujata Singh. During the last 14 years, over 700 members of the opposition leadership disappeared without trace and hundreds of thousands jailed. You have mentioned about the huge number of cases against the opposition leaders. Even Prof. Mohammed Yunus of Grameen Bank has 198 criminal cases against him. Hasina hates him though Yunus is adored in the world. Most of the national assets have been looted and sent overseas. Only recently, one Indian source, Mr. Chandan Nandy of New Delhi, reported that Hasina's son Joy, who lives in America, received a graft of Taka11000 millions. His web page nenews.in has been banned. In a situation like this, America has put pressure on Hasina to conduct a fair election. In this environment, what do you think about the people's attitude to America.

    Bangladesh is in a tricky place. Most won't understand it without being in the country. From the outside perspective, Bangladesh had a pretty smooth journey in the last 13-14 years. But it's quite another story from our perspective. The ruling party basically destroyed the main opposition party. Their leader Khaleda is sentenced to jail, her son Tareq is a fugitive and most of their top party leaders in central committee and grassroot committees are either in jail or changed parties to join the ruling party. Are the ones in jail are guilty? Maybe, probably but so are the ones in the ruling party as well. There are very few politicians who reached the top but is not guilty of doing something illegal. Most of these crimes can't be traced back to them or won't be investigated. The government employees, teachers, army personnel all of these people have been encouraged to take sides in politics and they actively show their allegiance by participating in various events organized by the ruling party. The elections have been a travesty, they control the booths to make their candidates win. Sometimes they try to do fair election and their candidates lose because someone from their own party is in control of the region and they stand in neutral banner on the election.
    In the big picture the ruling party has stayed in power by satisfying the government employees, businessmen, having good relations with india to make sure they won't help the other party(the opposition party don't want good relations with india so india's choice is easy). Sheikh Hasina is old and her son is not totally ready to take full control of the ruling party. This puts them in a vulnerable position. The people of Bangladesh is also in a dilemma because even if someone else comes in power, it will become a very unstable place and it's very possible for our country to have a economic collapse(there is already a crisis with foreign currency rn because of bad monetary policy) and have a rapid rise of islamic extremists.
    I have conveniently avoided the topic of corruption because the whole country is drowning in corruption and we have kind of embraced it and work our way with it. The businessmen in our country has the ruling party in a vice grip and our economy is on the brink of a collapse if they continue with their indifference to it to keep their profits fat. The central bank updates their policies based on these businessmen's whims, so enough said.

    If the Indian Gov is so keen to count Bangladesh as one of their closest friends, maybe it would make sense to come to an arragnement to promote trade and co-operation. Align the interests of the two countries together - both nations can stand to benefit. There is a huge developmental gap between the western states of India and the eastern states. To promote prosperity among those eastern states and reduce the security issues there, Bangladesh can offer a lot of advantages. Of course, India can extract these consessions, but it would increase tension. Colaboration and not exploitation would cement the relationships between India and Bangladesh, and ensure that other countries cannot get a foothold here.

    Regarding Pakistan, the Establishment tried to avoid Election but ultimately gave the date to Imran Khan party PTI while all other parties who do not want election supported the Estab.
    Finally due to pressure of IMF for loan , the care taker govt agreed to hold election on Feb8.
    Sub continent politics is sort of Dynistic politics be it India, Bangladesh or Pakistan which should END
    In Pakistan wth emergence National Leader Imran Khan who mobilized EDUCATED YOUTH & POOR PEOPLE , OF Pakistan;
    the thinking is developing of a 2 term for a leader like USA is taking root.
    This looks logical now in this FAST PACE WORLD😊

    Indian should stay with Bangladeshi people not with any party. People wants a free and fair election. India should also want that too. In long term it will be best for India. If Hasina continue like this, in recent year Bangladesh might fall in to a civil war and which will be bad for India also. Bangladeshi wants peace and want India as a friend not as a father or god.

    US is not seeking regime change in Bangladesh. US is supporting Bangladeshis' aspiration to vote freely, speak freely and have different points of view, all of which have been taken away by Sheikh Hasina.
    India needs to understand that supporting the people of Bangladesh will pay dividends. She does not need to blindly support the Awami League. The main opposition party called the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is reincarnating itself as a moderate progressive party that India will have no reason to fear (despite BNP's past which it is trying to shed). So India needs to update her foreign policy regarding Bangladesh. The way India supported Hasina's last two fraudulent elections have created great animocity among many Bangladeshis.
    PS: BNP no longer has an electoral aliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.

    Shekar Shab's analysis appears to overlook the recent history of Indian administration's direct interference in politics and elections. This interference has resulted in political instability, corruption, and human rights violations. Moreover, the country is facing a growing extremist threat, and its increasingly authoritarian government has worsened the issues that have hindered its potential to become a prominent global actor. The general elections in 2014 and 2018 were marred by widespread allegations of vote tampering and other irregularities. Although the next general elections are scheduled for December 2023, the formation of the newly established Election Commission, without consulting opposition parties, has raised doubts about its impartiality. The opposition, particularly the BNP, has expressed concerns about the chief election commissioner's alleged loyalty to the ruling Awami League. Additionally, with Khalida Zia's declining health, the BNP may face another setback in the upcoming elections. Even smaller parties like the Liberal Democratic Party seem incapable of providing significant competition to the Awami League. Consequently, Bangladesh's political landscape may continue to be overshadowed by an authoritarian regime dominated by one party, which poses challenges to the country's democratic well-being and long-term economic prospects.

      But the party in power should be good for India .
      Now this can cause one major problem.
      If People are against any party and that party is close to India, then people of that country will start hating India too. This will cause a long term problem for India.
      So what should be a pragmatic approach by looking into all this.
      India is not the USA who will
      Buy everyone using money and far away from Asia.

    As per US India has become too powerful compared to Pakistan and US is loising its grip over the region to control as per their interest. So to have a pro Pakistan govt. in Bangladesh to counter India's dominance in the subcontinent, is in US interest to reign in the controls.

    Approximately 70% people support Sheikh Hasina. This survey has been conducted by International republican Institute (IRI). It's a American unprofitable organisation.

    The USA was and is not our friend. Kissinger said that to be an enemy of the USA is dangerous but to be a friend of the USA is fatal.

    If USA is Indian friend, India Don't need enemies 😃
    USA is trying to establish radical extremist groups in power in Bangladesh. BNP protested Against PM modi visit & attacked on Hindu Temple last time.
    In 2004 BNP tried to provide 10 trucks on modern weapons to Indian militants in northeast. Bangladesh & India relation will be the worst & Peace will be destroyed in border.
