Dumb kids making “being possessed” into a challenge is the realest thing I’ve seen in any movie this year.
if by most "realest" you mean most zoomer no cap frfr, then yeah.
I could see my own generation doing dumb shit like this, lol. Especially bogans in Australia. Hell, Ouija boards were super popular @@user-io9hj9ip2d
i mean its all a metaphor for drug use
Idk. I doubt kids would watch those videos on Snapchat of teens eyes going black and getting possessed and then wanna go and do it themselves 😭
@@kr6985 I'd definitely go and watch at least, though these guys were just to reckless.
I think the spirit that tricked Mia by masquerading as her mother was the drowned spirit she let in the first time she did the summoning. Now and again, you hear underwater sfx whenever Mia was alone, and the more we saw the "mother" spirit the more drenched and bloated she became, similar to the drowned spirit.
oo good take, could explain why the "mother" ghost knew so much about her, like the nickname, if it had already been in her head!
Yea I figured she was possessed longer than 90 seconds and she was feeding into the spirit thinking it was her mother
Good observation. I just knew it wasn't her mother and thought it could've been just about any one of those evil spirits that wanted her to kill the kid so they could keep tormenting him forever.
I think you’re right sir.
I agree, especially with saying her father was lying without saying why, if it was really her she'd say, but can't cause it's in Mia's head
Aside from the very obvious drug parallels that you mention, the most clever use of it is how Mia see's her life falling apart but convinced herself that going back to the hand (even just one more time) is the way to solve the issues created by the hand.
Omg YES
isn't that another drug parallel tho-

Mia seeing Riley and her dad all healed and shows how fast time flies for dead people. To her it was a few minutes, but it was probably months or even years in the real world.
I thought that was him dying and going to heaven (getting in a glowing elevator going up)
@@JB-ku7uz Mia’s friend found Max injured so I think she called an ambulance and he was able to recover. So sad thinking Max lost his wife and daughter to suicide.
@MrSpeedyAce I was thinking the same since she found him alive. Plus as someone pointed out there's no telling how much time had actually gone by so he could have been healed by then
@MrSpeedyAce
I don’t think she called right away given that the second she saw him, she knew Riley was in trouble. I think she wasn’t even thinking about calling an ambulance since she needed to get to her brother asap
@@MrSpeedyAcegetting stabbed in the area that he was stabbed almost always results in death bro
The spirit attached to Mia actually does get weaker throughout the film. The spirit that enters her is a drowned woman, and is attached to Mia because she spent longer than 90s in her. The ghost is able to read her memories and then appear as her mother to Riley in the future to trick Mia. It was never her mother in the first place. As the movie goes on you can see that her mother's ghost gets wetter and more bloated as the spirit is less able to take a different form
the spirit that was in riley when he 1st got possessed actually was her mother, then the drowned spirit took over his body and that's when he started bashing his head
Yesssss that’s why you hear water every time her “mother” spirit appears
OMG! Your right!
@@Sheed96 I dont think the spirit that possessed Riley was the drowned woman. She was attached to Mia, not Riley. I think it was the spirit of the old man that we see in the ending. And I dont think it was ever Mias mother, not even when Riley first gets possessed. It was the evil spirit posing as her mother to manipulate Mia to keep the possession of Riley going over 90 seconds so that they could claim his soul, which the evil spirits/demons wanted from the very beginning. Thats why Riley started bashing his head and trying to kill himself straight away after the 90 seconds. It was the evil spirit trying to kill Rileys body, so his soul would be trapped in hell forever.
@@axelsvensson5234the first time was Mia mother but the reason other evil spirits get on was cuz Riley young and he was on the hand for longer than 90 seconds so the door was open for other spirits
Can't help but feel really bad for her father. Loses his wife and daughter in the span of two years... brutal shit.
My uncle in 2011 first was diagnosed with an uncurable cancer then his 16 year old daughter or my cousin died in a car accident then after his wife divorces him all in a span of 1 year if thats not terrible than I don't know what it 😅
It was also very painful to watch knowing Mia ignored him for most of the movie then when she’s in the spiritual realm and she tries to get to him, she can’t as he’s leaving the hospital.

This the comment I've been looking for! Omg I felt so bad for him being an innocent kid that gets hurt trying to fit in with the older kids that literally brought the devil to his house
@@Luvseatshawty It was incredible horror imagery. I still think about it.
@tarumakela5075 that was probably the scariest hell scene I've ever scene in a movie. Riley got a bad break period! That spirit that wanted him did a number on him to begin with. I really think what happened was he was controlled by Mias mom and when the 90 second mark hit, the old man bum rushed her to get ahold of Riley.
A great scene, clearly inspired by Event Horizon
I’m interested in a prequel to find out about the medium the hand was taken from… This has the potential to create some interesting lore…
I wish they wouldn't but I know they will
Omg yes!!!!
The creators said that they've already completed a prequel that focuses on Duckett and that it will all be shown through camera phones/social media. There's also a sequel in the works. So, there's probably going to be more info on the hands origin, but probably not via a dedicated movie.

Riley was “cured” at the end. The spirit gets weaker the longer it stays in you while the host is still alive. That’s why Riley was always trying to off himself while he was in the hospital. The spirits really wanted Riley dead so they tried to get Mia to kill him as well.
I wonder why they wanted him dead?
@@oisinlynch8427so he can he stay with them nd take his soul
@@oisinlynch8427because if he died while they were still in him, they would have had his soul forever.
I thought mia was actually Riley the whole time
@@oisinlynch8427 Some people assume that they want Riley specifically because he has a pure soul, so that could explain their desperation to kill him or have Mia murder him. Either way, the drowned spirit that possessed her from the very first party was also showing signs of losing power over her. Her "mother" would appear drenched more and more often, and she was becoming bloated, too. Mia was dealt a terrible fate, but she sort of sought it out, too. Very tragic film,
Edit: the pure soul, by the way, is alluded to the fact that Riley denied the cigarette from his friend in the beginning of the movie and wanted to help the suffering kangaroo. The cigarette, particularly, is a good case since the movie is about the dangers of drug abuse. So, he seems to possess a strong will and a good soul. The spirits sensed that so they targeted him with no other goal other than to make an innocent suffer - alluded to how innocent people suffer from those close to them abusing drugs.
The spirit of “Mia’s mom” looks more and more like the drowned lady (the original spirit Mia let in) as the movie goes on. It’s such a cool detail!
Especially knowing the “spirits get weaker over time” detail. Seriously such a good and clever movie! As an avid horror/thriller fan I couldn’t believe a thriller could have so much depth

I think riley fully recovered because as was stated “the spirit gets weaker over time”. The spirit eventually got too weak to maintain possession. I also believe Mia would have been able to recover too but she kept using the hand re-strengthening their power.

The acting was so good! Mia's actress completely embodied the character, she was so vulnerable and likable even while acting out in this needy grief filled way. She was able to pull off her character going crazy so much better than 99% of other movies. And she did a great job embodying the various spirits. Also, the teens were believable. Writing believable mean teens is a shortcoming of a lot of films. The dialogue was believable and felt authentic, and their actions and motivations seemed true to their characters. Having such human and realistic characters and really grounded it and made it so much more compelling.
Even despite her problematic nature behavior without intervention of the spirits, I felt her despair and dread. Such great casting!
I completely agree! She was so so convincing when she was possessed by all the spirits, it scared the hell out of me. When I came out of the theatre I was dumbfounded when I thought of the actress being able to pull that off. So good! Also the writing and portrayal of high school kids were spot on. This is so something that would happen if something like this hand was around. Doing it bc of peer pressure and views/popularity. Everything about this movie was amazing
I think another thing that makes her a good character is how she can also be someone we hate due to a selfish, but very human action. She disregarded Riley’s safety and well-being just for consolation. In the theater I was actually upset with how selfish she was, fantastic acting!
Acting was indeed top notch! Really made met get into the movie
I have to disagree. I thought that scene where she's repeating run was really cringe. It just sounded really stupid and seemed more like an unintentional comedic moment.
Man the part where Mia is facing the little girl spirit, and the spirit says to Mia “I let you in” gave me one of them chills down my spine! Lol
Oh same it was really intense
Brooo I swear!! No one really mentions that part!
That was originally a 2 minute long sequence according to the directors
My theatre’s reaction was awesome we all gasped because it was a fucking twist
And when the spirit tells her “you saw” omg
It’s absolutely a drug metaphor - Mia becomes an addict, desperate to talk with her mom/chase the high. The two who had the hand in a backpack are stand ins for drug dealers. The brother’s line on the bus about the spirits leaving if you don’t use the hand is a parallel for detoxing. They also established this idea when Riley was offered a cigarette by his buddy. There’s a lot more but typing is exhausting.
Keep on typing. It might be the most straightforward metaphor in the film, but you do a great job pointing out details supporting this view.
There are lots of very obvious allusions to drugs/addiction in this movie, but one that really stood out to me was Duckett’s brother saying “He thought he had real friends, but real friends would have seen what it was doing to him.”
@@ratwhisperer8667 and it's also followed up with the brother yelling, "when are you going to stop fucking up people's lives?" very obvious allusion to them being the "dealers"
Also how the little brother wanted to try the hand because he thought it would make him look cool in front of his friend
@@ratwhisperer8667don’t forget that they didn’t want Riley to try because of his age. What does being of age have to do with talking to dead spirits? 🤣 also, at the party they recorded riley using the hand but somehow, none of the adults talk about this. Also, the mom noted, “there wasn’t any narcotics” at the party so she felt bad for blaming Mia, but ahah! Mia took the hand home after the cops raided everything in her backpack
The movie was probably the best depiction of drug addiction I’ve seen. It blew my mind how cleverly executed it was. The “talk to me” = looking at what it can do to you/ aware of the consequences. “I let you in” = allowing the drug to corrupt you knowing what is possible. “The longer it stays in you the less powerful it is” = the high. Mia using the hand to try and solve the problems it caused = addicts numbing the pain of withdrawal/their lives falling apart. The fact that Mia was the most affected buy it due to her having the most tragic history which is the case for most addicts. Also her mother having strong references to being an addict having overdosed and spreading that affliction to her daughter. The peer pressuring of getting Riley to try the hand, the most innocent being there and him looking up to Mia making him more susceptible to peer pressure. Such a great movie.
Exactly, brilliantly made

Lmao u wanna watch a better movie about drug addiction. Then watch "Requim for a dream". Just a heads up, it might make u depressed.
@@hishamrashid5293was just thinking this 😬
The irony behind Riley not wanting a cigarette knowing how they are yet still wants to do the hand because he doesn't see any consequences and sees it as just fun.
I think an important detail forgotten was that it’s TWO spirits, not just the drowned woman. When the spirit possesses Mia, she hints that ‘he likes you’ to Riley, and that ‘he’ was standing behind him. Mia sees the spirit possessing Riley near the end, which is an old man. So yes, Mia was possessed by the drowned woman who took the form of her mother (the ‘mother’ form kept getting wetter and more bloated as time went on) but the ghost trying to take Riley was the old man mentioned in the beginning.
I thought it said "she likes you" as in Mia likes him. Like how the one possessing the boyfriend said "he hates when you touch him" to Jade

I feel like the spirit never got weak with Mia because she kept using the hand over and over compared to Riley only using it once.
She literally the weakest of the group mentally and she let the spirit in. It knew the best way to take advantage of her
You can say that but like someone else in the comments has already said you can assume it got weaker because the more we see Mia’s mom the appearance looks more and more like the drowned spirit
I think it's more the fact she went over 90 seconds the first time. No one else did so no one else let it in for good.
Yep spot on
@@tadeuszmusic Riley did. But he got better cause he didn’t keep using the hand.
I enjoyed that the title was so double meaning. Mia need to talk to her mom, her dad was desperate to talk to his daughter; Jade needed to talk about how Mia's grief was smothering her and her family. Jade's mom harbored resentment towards Mia's "drug" usage. Riley's the kid who needed someone to hear him as he was growing up and under pressure to do things he may not want to do. The boyfriend wouldn't talk about how he's not attracted to his girlfriend.
All these characters needed to do was to talk or be heard. Something so simple yet it was the hardest for all of them.
Absolutely brilliant observation!!!!!
The realization Mia has at the end when she realizes she’s on the other side. That hit hard. Something to definitely point out was the group she was summoned by had the other hand. They said it was out there somewhere and they were using the right hand until the end of the movie when Mia connected by extending her left hand. The sequel or prequel will be nothing short of genius.

I just love how everyone just leaves Max to bleed out instead of taking him to a hospital
yeah too much work to call the cops also no one got into toruble
Yea I’m surprised he survived since Mia left him and we didn’t see Jade call for help.
Jade called an ambulance for Max before she went back to the hospital to find Mia.
Jade literally tells her mom she called the ambulance when she tells her that Mia is dangerous
i'm supprised how he didn;t bleed out
One of the most disturbing parts to me was how Mia had a great fear of being isolated and not wanting to be alone after her mothers passing. The grief had isolated her. But in the end , her greatest fear had come true - which was embodied with all the characters moving on and the lights slowly turning off and leaving Mia completely alone. I found that deeply saddening.
What makes it worse of it was self sabotage
When Mia was first possessed, the spirit said that "He" wanted Rylie and that "He" was right behind him. The spirit that had Mia was the drowned lady and the one that had Rylie was the old man in a hospital gown, presumably some kind of pedophile because he *really wanted* the young boy of the group. The Old Man was also one of the spirits Mia saw in the hospital at the end.
The ending was Mia being manipulated and egged on by the Drowned Lady and the Old Man, to kill herself and Rylie so they could both be taken. It's unclear to me whether or not Mia was pushed by Jade into the traffic or if Mia did it herself so she wouldn't be able to harm Rylie, but in the end Mia did let go of the wheelchair, after the Drowned Lady said "we will have him forever" which likely reminded Mia what was really going on.
I believe that the old man was always around Rylie after that first time and just waiting for an opportunity, which he got, so he kicked out the mother and took him. Pretty sure it was also the Old Mans hand that touched Rylie in the scene where him and Mia were on the cot at night, indicating that he isn't leaving his side until he can have him.
Also I really believe that the first spirit that took Rylie was actually Mia's mom, because that is the only time anyone claiming to be the mother talked as if she actually DID kill herself. She told Mia that she was sorry, and she didn't want her to blame herself, and she didn't want her to hate her. Plus the way Rylie looked when he saw the spirit first, looking at Mia and being hesitant. Then after Mia talks to her 'mother' for a bit Rylie makes the possessed moves again, and only then starts hurting himself. Plus the mothers attitude shifted from 'I'm so sorry, don't hate me' to 'I would NEVER do that! I would NEVER leave you!" again making me think that that first interaction was the actual mother.
It would make total sense that the mother would be a spirit trapped in limbo, having taken her own life, because I am fairly certain that that is what many religions believe will happen in some way.
This was a great breakdown, thank you.
100% agree on all of this.
I completely agree with you, except for the Old Man being a pedophile. I think him wanting Riley (the youngest boy of the group) came from a place of wanting to re-experience youth again, rather than a place of pedophilia. But this is just how I took it.
Amazing break down thank you for it. Honestly I think beside using this as a metaphor for drugs it also shows a little metaphor regarding suicide. Seems like Mia and her mom ended in the spirit realm because of suicide. In south east Asia culture, people thinks that when one commit suicide they will be stuck in another realm.
@laurenbrowler6240 idk if he's right about the pedophilia or not but your argument doesn't really make much sense. All the kids there are young. None of them even look 18. I dont see much difference between being like 12 or 16 if the goal is just to be young.
Even though both Riley and Mia both went over the time limit and had spirits attached to them, the difference was that Riley had people in his life (his mom and sister) who were actively taking care of and protecting him. Mia’s and her dad did care about each other but they were both let their grief isolate them. Because Mia and her dad were so isolated from each other, it was easier for the spirit to trick Mia. Her father didn’t seem as “active” in connecting with her and by the time he did the spirit pretty much had a hold on her and was able to convince her to do things even though the spirit looked less and less like her mother each time.
That was just my observation.
I think that's pretty far off tbh. Family doesnt have much to do with it. Only reason it to weaker for the boy was because he wasnt interacting with the the hand. She used it several times after going over the limit prolonging the connection.
Nah.
he didnt go over the time limit they said he could do it for 50 seconds thats the time limit they went over not the original 90 seconds
The whole movie Mia was ignoring her dad’s calls, ha calls multiple times throughout the movie but she declines everytime. I don’t think he didn’t care, I think it’s more that she was pushing him away.
@@52tayyy They did go over the original time limit with Riley. First she said 50 and then begged for more, when it came upon the full 90 seconds they went over that as well. Then the spirit almost killed Riley
I also thought the ritual was a metaphor for drug addiction especially the way everyone was scared to admit why Riley ended up in that way. Aswell, they acting like the spirits inside them is a high. Really enjoyed this film!!!
It also ties into the larger theme of peer pressure that we get early on with Riley and his friend talking about cigarettes
I picked up on that too! Plus Ducketts brother saying things like you invited him just to use him (for the hand ie drugs) but you weren't really friends, and you keep ruining people's lives
At the party that Riley got possessed, we get this montage of them taking turns using the hand and they all hype each other up, laugh at each other, and cheer after they come back to their senses. It absolutely is a metaphor for drugs. I think the twins said the inspiration for this take on possession is from watching a TikTok video of a teenager having a seizure at a party after doing hard drugs and the other teens laughing and recording him rather than taking him to the hospital.
Do you know of any drugs to cause that violent self-harm display by Riley?
^ PCP & bath salts? Meth?
I love this. The more I think about it, the more I think Mia knew what she was doing at the end, and decided to end her suffering. I thought the Kangaroo reflected Riley’s suffering, but after it happened, perhaps it was her own suffering that she needed to end.
how did she knew what she was doing if it seems like now shes in hell?. thats not ending her suffering
Riley sister saved him mia failed
@@KING-MUFFASAThat's what I'm confused about. Did Mia jump or did Riley's sister Jade push her into traffic?
@@wrestlingjudoms1302 if you Google it. It says mia gets pushed
I think you may have missed the ending? She ended up in hell basically so thats not her ending ber suffering, the spirit convinced her to kill herself thus consuming her soul
One thing I noticed that I think may have been missed here is that Riley was on the verge of being healed regardless of Mia’s “intervention”. When Mia calls Riley’s sister to trick her the sister tells her that she actually thinks Riley is getting better because he woke up and spoke a bit. And when Mia went to the hospital and held the scissor over Riley for a split second we see what Riley really looks like other than that old messed up man he actually had his eyes opened and looked responsive and no longer possessed. The spirits gaslit and manipulated Mia so much to the point that she didn’t even realize she didn’t have to do anything in the first place since the longer a spirit is in the body the weaker it gets so it eventually leaves. As long as Riley remained restrained so that he couldn’t off himself the spirit would have always needed to leave after a period of time thats why it tried every chance it had to harm Riley as much as possible.
I think that’s why Mia was screaming and lowered the scissors
your comment also made me realize that the spirit getting weaker over time is a metaphor for detox. if mia had stopped using the hand, she might have been fine too but her addiction to the hand is what made her lose her grip on reality.
And when he does off himself that’s when the old man Riley seen the first time gets to have him. It was such an interesting movie in my opinion.
The thing I really loved about this was how it captured house party’s. The grounding of the fear of something going wrong, someone drinking too much, wrecking the house, etc dialled up to a million by the supernatural element I think gave it an inherit, relatable tension.
yes. they threw a house party against the mothers will and the worst thing possible happened when the little brother got tragically hurt. that moment when the mother did not let the daughter hold her hand in the car was devastating. thats like the biggest fear of any teenager to have dissapointed the trust of their parents like that.
The laughing after something almost went terribly wrong is so house partys filled with drugs. That moment when teens think they will need a ambulance but then the person say theyre ok and feel awesome so everybody just laugh it out and go back to party mode 💀 A few days later the person who almost got into a literal coma says stuff like "oh while using I felt such clarity, everything just made sense and I was who I meant to be" 🤡

I dont think you mentioned it, so just in case: she was possessed for a little over 90 seconds on her first go with the drowned spirit, and her mother died from overdose but whenever we saw her spirit she was drenched and became more and more bloated, insinuating that it was the drowned spirit the whole time and not the mom. I personally think that either the mom was there in Riley at first but then was taken over by a different spirit, OR it was the drowned spirit in disguise and using the knowledge she got from possessing Mia and she and Riley were just sharing the same demon
EDIT: the mom died of overdose, not self mutilation. Got it mixed up because of the bloody clawing at the door
Yea, this is spot on. Also, there are a lot of water sounds present throughout the movie.
Yeah agreed
I thought the mom died from overdose?
@@attitudeproblem6462she did
I'd wager the mom was really there at first, because when the time is up she leaves and we can see Riley's pupils go back to normal but since Mia didn't remove it from his hand the creepy old guy got in. Or rather, a bunch of spirits, like the ones we see torturing Riley, were fighting for control of his body which was why he was flying around the room
I’m I the only one who gets the significance of the candle? When Mia was in the dark after she died she saw a hand and a light. So thats why blowing off the candle makes the spirit unable to find the hand.
What also sucks is everyone’s memory of Mia is completely tarnished. She stabbed her dad in the neck, and she almost pushed Riley into traffic.
The Racka brothers absolutely knocked it out of the park. Probably THE best directorial debut for a long time.

@@ddbob1problem with that is it would be murder with many many witnesses
She jumped, I guess that’s why she is a wandering spirit. Suicide.
That ending sequence in purgatory, and then showing how she’s now the spirit which gets communicated with shook me to my core. It perfectly demonstrates the endless cycle of drug abuse, from beginning to end and back again in a perfect loop.
Never got that drug vibe from the movie thought it was about demons tf did you watch
I feel like the only reason it got out of hand for Riley and Mia was because they were the most vulnerable people who touched the hand. Riley wanted to prove to his friend James he was cool and felt like a loser and I’m assuming, not “grown up” in a since. And Mia was grieving terribly for her mom.
And she willingly and consciously put her friend’s brother life in danger so speak to spirit that took advantage of her weak mental state
Why did the spirit target riley? When mia was first played the game the ghost pointed to Riley specifically and said they would ruin him or something like that. Why? I wish we had gotten more backstory to the ghost
The reason it got out of hand was because they both went over the 90 second mark. Same thing happened to that one guy's brother.
@@WhitneyDahlinthe same reason for all possession movies, it’s usually the weakest and most vulnerable who become possessed. innocent kid who feels like an outcast in society and within his family, if you’ve watched possession movies it’s usually the same category of characters who become possessed.

I really liked talk to me. I thought it had really interesting characters, ideas, and scares. Was it terrifying as hell? No. It’s creepy but not nightmare enduring.
For me it was the scariest movie I've seen in years because there was an element of realness to it. Kids playing around getting high and getting mentally ill because of it. It was eerie asf for me and a very hard watch.
I recommend the new Boogey Man if you want something that will keep you up at night. I haven't been scared watching a horror movie in a while.
It's more than creepy because unresolved trauma can destroy lives. Mia never completed the grieving process, so she got hooked on reconnecting with her mom, only to get used, abused, and killed by her addiction. Mia's tragedy lingers...
@@yusefendure I get that, and all that makes her a great character. But for me the movie was more of a creepy tragedy than a bone chilling horror movie.
Me, after having nightmares all night long because of this movie, reading your comment 😩😩😂😂
I think the brother is perfectly ok. It was spelled out that the less u use it the weaker the connection. There were so many connections to the grief process throughout this movie and I feel like it really highlights how you can be your own demise by not allowing yourself the relief of acceptance. The hand was obvs a reference to drug use since they were getting a high off of it, and the whole time mia was in denial about her mom and when the truth came to light she denied even more. The more she denied the closer she came to her eventual death, I haven’t seen the movie since it came out so when I can rewatch it ill edit this comment and add more things I noticed bc there was A LOT, however my memory is ass so I can’t remember lol
You can’t really trust what spirits say. They can look into your mind for answers to any questions you may ask in order to convince you they are who you think they are.
So if Mia had kept her head as clear as possible, which is an impossible task but still, she would have realized sooner it wasn’t her mother she was talking to.
Agree. She willingly chose to stay in the denial stage and face the consequences of her selfish actions
I think the spirits got the answers when they possessed the kids. Which just goes to show how stupid these kids were... If they had just talked to the ghosts they could have (probably?) done that pretty safely, but it wouldn't be that entertaining to watch, so they wanted the possessions and gave some of the meaner ghosts an opening.
But was it really her mother the first time when Riley played? Or another red herring?

Talk To Me is a modern-day tragedy. This film is all about Mia's downfall, so even though it's layered with addiction, unresolved trauma, and possessions going viral, Mia gets targeted, manipulated, and killed by her refusal to accept reality.
The Philippou brothers are mad geniuses. We just saw a classic.
The scene where they were taking turns with the hand was def a great drug usage parallel. It was so weird how they got sorta like a high off of it and how it similar to drugs giving you that euphoric feeling.

This movie reminds me of sinister and oculus. Both good movies.
During Riley's possession, the camera zoomed at Mia's hand partially holding the embalmed hand. What if Mia somehow during that time she became the connection (candle) between Riley and the spirit world, therefore she had to die to end Riley's possession?
Omg a good point…it makes sense now
I think when she touches the hand, she actually let her spirits get to Riley instead of her mom which Riley initialy had contact with. Because its only after she touches the hand, Riley starta hurting himself
Omg. Wow finally it kind of makes sense! Great movie!

Mia’s “spirit”/the drowned woman, hitched a ride into Riley when Mia grabbed his hand during his possession. That’s the spirit that said it wanted Riley as soon as it inhabited Mia. And it gave Riley identical injuries.
Mia was honestly irking my soul, she got what she deserved.

It's kind of driving me nuts that people are so focused on the rules of how possession works. The end scene in the hospital isn't about Mia's dad and Riley getting better or being dead, it's about the horror of Mia's worst nightmare coming true - the complete dissolution of her self, loss of connection to loved ones, and brutal isolation that came as a result of where her pain had taken her.
And also throughout the film its made clear that mia is kinda clingy as in she doesn't like to be alone....and now shes stuck there so as soon as she sees a hand reaching out she grabs onto it.
@@shivamsudthank you for pointing that out, it’s said straight up when Mia first goes to the party to see if the hand was real that she was “too clingy”
There is also a theme of yellow. When you watch it again, Mia has on something yellow the whole film. There are yellow items in different scenes throughout the movie. The candle is yellow, yellow flowers in multiple scenes, the scissors look yellow in the hospital scene, dad uses a yellow towel on his neck, she mostly has on a yellow shirt, or with yellow accents, and scrunchie on her wrist. The light at the end is yellow. You have to pay attention, but theres something there.
So I re-watched this movie once it became available on streaming and there's an important detail which I think some people might have missed: Mia didn't "sacrifice" herself or willingly end her own life. She was pushed by Riley's sister into the traffic. When you re-watch that scene and slow it down you can clearly see it. And now she's stuck in demon limbo forever because the "drowned" spirit (who was imitating her mother throughout the entire film) was still connected to her when she died. Had Mia just stopped using the hand after the Riley incident everything would've been fine. The spirits would've left both her and Riley. But instead she kept on conversing with her "mother" and kept the spirit connected to her. Hence the moral of the story: Don't do drugs. And if you do... Stop as soon as you can before it becomes too late/irreversible damage is done
Your post is the actual “Ending Explained”. Well done! 👏
omg I just rewatched it nd saw that jade pused mia to save her brother
Ur right!! I just rewatched it.
i just rewatched it frame by frame as best as i could on netflix and im not seeing jade throw mia in front of the car? can anyone point me to a timestamp or a video that breaks this down bc im not convinced. i think the bloated "mother" spirit and old man spirit saying "we'll have him forever" snapped her out of it and made her realise what she had to do (sacrifice herself)
@@masochistic_art yeah i agree with you.. the only thing we do see clearly in that sequence is a closeup of mia letting go of riley's wheelchair - that to me is enough to show she was the one who threw herself into traffic. if jade had just pushed her, mia would have still been holding on to the wheelchair and riley would've gone with her. also the fact that duckett also killed himself seems to serve as foreshadowing that mia is the one who killed herself
I found this to be more of a psychological thriller that turned into a tragic drama at the end.
mia was such a painfully compelling character, i spent the whole movie rooting for her to get a happy ending

Really? I was cheering for the opposite. She's a selfish asshle.
Nah, she definitely got what she deserved for allowing Riley to stay past the 90 second mark all for her own selfish reasons. I don't care if she was tricked because she should have known after everyone warning her but instead put Riley in danger all because of her inability to grieve properly.

I need to rewatch the highway scene again because I'm not sure why Mia ended up in the road, but my theory is that she had a change of heart at the end and said "I let you in" to pull the spirit from Riley into her and willingly died to keep him safe. Even though she could've just waited for Riley to get better, she was past the point of reason and searching for quick solutions. But it's just a loose theory.

I'm pretty sure they never blew the candle out after Riley, which is how the spirit attached itself to Mia. Later when they try to figure out where the hand came from at the bus stop, Mia tells the group that she's been seeing things. When trying to figure out why, someone (can't remember which one) asks the group "did we blow out the candle?", then one answers "I think so". The candle was still lit when the ambulance & police went into the room.
When Mia first attempted to use the hand remember Haley says they went a little over 90 seconds which is how the drowned spirit attached itself to Mia. Another spirit attached itself to Riley, the old man we see at the end of the movie since they also let him go over his time.
@@nicoleo.5274 Yes I understand that Mia went a little over & the drowned woman attached to her. But they also did not blow out the candle. Which in turn didn’t “close the door”. That’s why she saw some spirit crawling on the floor to her bed & then started sucking Daniels toe. It is also the reason that Riley was shown with all those other spirits that were attacking him. The old man spirit attached to him because it went over 90seconds, then the other spirits were able to surround him because the candle wasn’t blown out.
@@TheWhitleyjozwiak u sing Le? , ❤
@@TheWhitleyjozwiakim pretty sure the blowing out of candle didn't really mean anything. As we see when mia dies....the candle only guides the souls to the hand .....the hand is what is actually making the connection....so im pretty sure that the possession is becoz of the 90 second rule and not the candle
@@shivamsud Yes the possession is because she went over 90seconds which is why the spirit of the drowned lady was still attached to her. However forgetting to blow out the candle left “the door open”. Which is why one of the rules is to blow out the candle. So that’s most likely why some other random spirit (not the drowned one), was able to pop up when she was sleeping next to that guy.
I could see a part 2 of this movie having Riley be the main character. Because the spirts wanted Riley specifically. Maybe she has the blood of a medium or something and by having that blood the Spirits are trying to use that blood in order to bring them all back from purgatory. But mia is still trying to make things better and shes caught in the purgatory and could either be
1. trying to help mia fight these spirit that are still after her
2. or using her to fully possess her body and use it as her own.
Riley is the boy with the busted face. As for the sequel I would like to see more of a prequel. I think it would be fun to find out where the hand comes from. I do like the idea of tying Riley to the movie bc all the spirits were jumping for him maybe Riley is a descendent of the hands original owner. There may be a scene where the og owner of the hand glimpses into purgatory and sees Mia bc purgatory is timeless and now but also then at the same time.
@@kitkat6442I like this idea.
I really loved the "alcohol/drug abuse" subtext. Mia's psychological condition is fragile, she's depressed and feeling nostalgic about everything, so overuse of a substance is clearly affects her much more, and of course she can easily get addicted. Also some under 18 person should not drink at all :) Anyway, I was there once, drinking and watching old videos, crying etc, this movie impressed me.

I honestly love this movie. And after seeing it, I got to thinking about the hand itself. I can't help but wonder if it's an alternate version of The Hand of Glory. For those of you who don't know, The Hand of Glory is a cursed object made by drying/pickling a hand of a murderer who was hung at the gallows. Another version of it is the hand is made into a candle, using the fat of a man who was also convicted of murder and hung from the gallows. Much like The Black Flame candle from Hocus Pocus.
Unlike in the movie, The Hand of Glory is said to do three different things. In its candle form, it will only light up for the person who's holding it as well as make people who see it go completely motionless. While in its dried/pickled form, it's said to unlock any door the holder comes across. There are other stories, one being about the hand being used for a robbery in Spital Inn in North Stainmore in 1797.
After asking a friend of mine about the idea of using a hand to talk to the dead, I was told that yes it is very possible. It's a form of Nercomancy and during the olden days, the Norse would use the skulls of loved ones to speak to them. So that might be where the idea of the hand in the movie came from.
Lol
Doesn't matter what pickled or freeze-dried or microwaved body part you have, you can't talk to the dead in real life
Yeah when I saw the hand I too thought about the Hand of Glory. I'm actually kinda surprised he didn't go more in depth on the lore and tie it into the movie. Same with Film, Comics, Explained. Also thanks for the added info on the Hand of Glory. Didn't realize it there were different abilities depending on the means of preservation.
You're welcome. I have a book about different types of cursed objects and read over the Hand of Glory the moment I got home. ^^

Was anybody else annoyed at the sister (Jade) for not looking out for her brother? The sister really fucks up on her responsibility to protect him. We are even see it in the beginning when Mia has the pick up the brother when it was Jade’s responsibility.
1st: Jade should’ve never taken him to the party in the beginning. Especially when she knows the shit they do at the party. My younger sibling would never come with me. Idc what punishment I get from my parents come morning.
2nd: At the house party when Riley wants to use the hand and she objects. She leaves, leaving Riley in the room with ppl who clearly didn’t mind when he original asks. No way in hell she should’ve left. She stays and prevents him doing it. They dump all the blame on Mia yet it’s her responsibility to protect her younger brother.
