  • Fused to iron in Earth’s core and in fallen meteorites, corrosion-resistant nickel finds its strength in numbers of alloys, from stainless steel to the shape-memory alloy nitinol, which, bent, returns to its original shape when heated.
Explore the versatility of this transition metal with host Ron Hipschman and Exploratorium Building Operations Manager Chuck Mignacco, who’ll demonstrate nickel electroplating and discuss welding with nickel.
Chuck Mignacco is Building Operations Manager at the Exploratorium, where he oversees the museum’s unique bay water heating and cooling system, solar photovoltaic system, and other operations of its award-winning green building at Pier 15. A former stagehand and rigger, Chuck was also a structural welder certified in MIG, TIG, and stick welding. He presented at Everything Matters: Argon in January 2017.

Chuck mentioned that nickel is preferred over chromium for plating springs because of its tensile properties aka: springy-ness. Nickel-plating is mechanically durable under repeated flexing, and the hard/brittle Chromium-plating is prone to flaking.
A good illustration of these properties is the fact that many chrome-plating processes start with nickel-plate layer followed by chrome-plate layer. Thereby imparting the best properties of each element in the resulting surface treatment. (Yet another fun and extremely practical Ni fact!) IIRC, most springs are coated using this very process.

I live on the east coast and can't attend your lectures as much as I'd like. Are the element cards going to be made available by mail-order at some point?

hi Rich, i believe our Exploratorium Store made some of the cards into a calendar for this year, so you might be able to get that. we will investigate if the whole set of element cards will be packaged for sale-stay tuned!
