The right to repair fight is gonna be wild in the coming years with EVs
Now we’re actually gonna be able to modify EV
It’s not gonna be a thing just like my apple phone. Especially when it comes to software the gov says it’s Tesla’s not yours
@@jonnyg9330 Software is a different beast -- it's under copyright & licensing, versus patent for a mechanical device. Just like you don't own the software on your PC, you paid a license to use it (unless it's open source software, which has its own licensing), the same goes for the software that runs the vehicle.
@@AndrewAMartin I’m aware of what you’re saying but they use that as a shield to also apply it to hardware
@@jonnyg9330 When the software is so tightly coupled to the hardware, it makes for a difficult situation. And the litigious nature of our society does not help - companies do not want to open themselves up to suits when people make mods and break unforseen bits and get hurt or even killed. Maybe they need something like Microsoft's Hardware Certification Lab but in reverse - a way for modders to submit software mods to the full system regression testing that the manufacturer does. But that takes time and effort and money - who is going to pay for it? Who controls it?
It’s called “Right to Repair “ and there is legislation going on right now in the US to either ban independent repair shops from being able to repair stuff or to make it law and ban big corporations from making it imposible to repair their stuff… look it up the more eyes we get on it the better

Yeah, and your plumber should not be banned from brain surgery. Extend your logic, that’s where you will be.

Ahh, sounds similar to their attempt to make it illegal to sell cars on the secondary markets due to you not owning the software and it'd be a breach of tos. Time to link up Hoovie, Rich and Louis Rossman
Tesla isn't necessarily preventing him from repairing this. It's one thing to suggest that manufacturers shouldn't be able to prevent *you* or someone else from fixing it. It's another entirely to demand they do it. Obviously, with EVs, this will become a much larger issue because the average person is even less qualified to work on these than ICE cars.
@@Evan-McM When they block your ability to buy replacement parts and companies from manufacturing replacement parts it is an issue. Last I checked this was property. Imagine if Homedepot couldnt get the parts to replace a water heater in your home or appliance. @@metie10 exactly my point - the ICE has been evolving for over a century, while battery technology has been stagnant for most of that time. It's only in the last 20 years that significant gains have been made, so expecting every wrinkle to be solved overnight is unrealistic.
I first got involved with EVs 35+ years ago, and deep cycle lead-acid batteries were basically it. Significant progress has been made, there's still a long way to go, but it is farther along than the ICE was at a similar time in its development.

All the best to Rossmann and the right to repair movement. I've supported him and its movement for ages. The reason Tesla "wouldn't wan't that" is because the high risk of some future "authorised" unofficial Tesla SC unsuccessfully replacing a Tesla battery pack. Therefore they are unable to escalate the the service visit internally to investigate what went wrong and how to prevent this from happening. It's not about making a few extra bucks for Tesla. It's regards to the safety for the customer the safety for the company. Just the logistics behind a battery replacement, e.g load, ship and store a Tesla HV battery pack requires immense and specific knowledge. And it requires proper consequences if something goes wrong or isn't done properly. People can be seriously injured, or even worse, thus allowing the risk of external companies dealing with this isn't for the best for anyone, except greedy customers and workshops.

When a cell fails, you can take apart the pack and replace it, but what about the 6999 other cells? How long until one more goes bunk? My guess is that manufactures can’t guarantee such a repair and thus need to provide new packs.
@@TheSteinbitt I would bet it's more about the time to replace the whole pack vs. finding and replacing an individual cell or ten or whatever. It’s like a mechanic shop saying: Your spark plugs are out, so we’ll replace the entire engine.
Yes, but the mechanic's shop is also full of trained Monkeys that have no idea what their doing in regards to spark plugs. All they know is "engine no work, add new engine."
Truth is, most mechanics and technicians are just not trained to deal with batteries, and most dealers aren't going to spend the money to buy the necessary equipment and train them when they make more money just selling new batteries, and get a massive tax write off (In some states) for sending the old batteries back to the manufacture to be recycled.
Tesla was smart. The only way electric cars and namely batteries can be handled properly is when you cut out the middle man. As long as dealerships are a thing, until the manufactures or the government or both put a gun to their head, they aren't going to handle this right. And even once they do. look at what happened to Cadillac. Dealerships left, right, and center dropped them like a rock in the ocean once they heard about their electrification plans...
No it is not. First, Hoovie has not made move one to resolve with Tesla, he is only going by what he hears on the totally reliable internet. That is bs. The charge could be curtailed just for instance by a coolant pump or logic problem. His battery may be just fine.

Voice of reason here. Dealers won't rebuild your engine or transmission, either. Probably not your differential. They don't take apart modules and reflow solder or replace bad capacitors. They want to change the whole thing, send the old one back to the manufacturer and know that the repair is at least warranteeable for some period of time. What happens if they do the $1000 repair and then 5 months later something else happens? You'd be pissed, that's what would happen.

Extreme close-up of the garage rug. That's just good CZcams, right there.
The thing about those Lithium Ion Batteries is that they have chemical components that degrade over time, so it doesn't matter if the car is an everyday driver or sits in the garage 6 days a week, it's only a matter of time before they fail. Time, not mileage, is the factor there. That's why folks like me who work from home and drive very little have no economic incentive to invest in an electric vehicle. I don't drive enough for it to save me any money in the long run. Electric is a nice option for city-folks, but internal combustion isn't going away anytime soon... unless the government outright bans it and thus screws people like me over, which I wouldn't put past them at this point.
Yeah and most electricity produced by coal burning anyways, so it's all a bunch of virtue signaling. All the materials necessary to make a new car.
Mileage is still a factor... Batteries are commonly rated on charge cycles (when you discharge and charge) which is basically a way to describe mileage. But you're right that time is also a big factor that largely isn't an issue with ICE cars other than for things like rust or rubber degradation (especially tires on heavier cars).
@@justhecuke "on heavier cars" speaking of electric vehicles.... Crash ratings are going to have to improve drastically considering *just how much extra weight* a Tesla, or any electric vehicle is carrying around. Weight that's low to the ground and may not make the car feel sluggish in the corners. Weight that can easily be countered by the blistering torque of electricity to make the car never feel slow. But also weight that will kill a family of four in a 97 dodge caravan with horrifying efficiency should they get into more than just a 25 mph fender bender.
Newer cars with their disposable, shock absorbing body panels that are designed to be absolutely demolished in a crash and absorb the impact, so that the family of four's bodies don't, are likely going to fare just fine, if not a bit diminished in their effectiveness... But that still leaves tens of thousands of cars on the roads, in every country, that are basically going to be rendered obsolete, death traps, to drive. As the heavy freight train electric vehicles, and primarily SUVs and trucks, become more common as electric becomes more prevalent.
Once again, being poor is going to be ever further a death sentence, as some rich asshole comes barreling over you, in your 2500 lb 95 civic. Him in his 11,000 pound, lifted, full sized electric truck, likely on his phone (he's important afterall), and all without a care or a thought to your safety or well being.
Full autonomy is a ways away (secretly I hope it gets sabotaged and never comes into fruition anyway, eff the good of mankind, I wanna drive damnit!). Big, heavy, electric SUVs and trucks, are not.
@@danielnelson4881 In many ways, those smaller cars are safer in head on collisions because the bigger vehicles will go up and over. There's been a few high profile examples of this with a recent one happening to a baseball player, if memory serves. Then there's also the added maneuverability and handling of a smaller car vs. a bigger one that makes it less likely to lose control or simply tip over.
But, you're right that bigger, heavier cars pose safety issues for other cars. However, our society usually doesn't require that you look out for the safety of others beyond normal care. We don't make a fuss about bicyclists killing pedestrians or fruit-bearing trees killing pedestrians and car windshields (unripe pine cones being a common example in the California Bay Area). Just not something that we normally do.
@@justhecuke I was referring specifically to the weight, not necessarily the size, although the two are usually connected. The cars affected by this won't all be small, and definitely won't all be able to go under the freight train of electric vehicle stampeding toward it. I'm referring simply to older vehicles that weren't designed with crumple zones in mind.
Also I never said anyone was going to make a fuss out of it, just that if you drive one of these pre crumple-zone vehicles, crashes are going to be many times more deadly for you with the rising numbers of heavy electric vehicles, and the higher possibility that the car you just got in a head on collision with is one of them. Old collector cars are going to become much more dangerous to drive than they already are, with the kinetic energy of a 10,000 pound electric car to keep in mind when taking them for a cruise.

Automotive News published a report on Thursday of this week noting that EVs were 2.3 times more expensive to service than ICE vehicles after three months of ownership. Analytics firm We Predict compiled the data by looking at roughly 19 million vehicles between the 2016 and 2021 model years.
That figure drops to just 1.6 times more expensive after one year, the report noted, as a result of a 77% drop in maintenance costs and a decline in repair costs. The data showed that service techs spend about twice as much time diagnosing problems with EVs as they do with regular gas vehicles. They spend about 1.5 times longer fixing them and the labor rate for repairs was about 1.3 times higher.
"It's an industry in launch. This is the launch factor you're seeing," said Renee Stephens, a vice president at We Predict.
EVs had a high rate of wheel problems, the study found. This was attributed to wear and tear associated with carrying bulky batteries.

Well that was 20 years ago and there is no such repair available yet, at least not from Toyota. It's usually one or two battery packs with a slightly lower voltage and you can see what the problem is once you remove the battery pack cover. There's usually corrosion which can be cleaned.
I have seen the Prius battery pack rebuild. For some reason Toyota used brass hardware to connect the cells which corrodes and causes connection issues. The rebuild kits contain nickel plated hardware to fix that issue. Seems like a design flaw from Toyota when they made the packs...

I feel like he uses the excuse of “I can drive the kids to school in it” when he buys all his cars 😂 like he’s gonna drive his kids to school in his Lamborghinis 😂
In fairness I've never heard him use that for one of his more ridiculous purchases, only the practical ones. SUVs, Sedans, Vans...
"lots of other cars I can use" Hoovie's understatement of the year.
Well, this is the same man who picked his daughter up from school in a Maybach that looked like it lost a fight against Wolverine.
Two trips at 160 mph?
Jay Leno has a cool story about driving some lying ass kid to school in his lamborghini!
My 1977 Thunderbird had a charging problem , fixed with a $90 alternator . But I don't have youtube money to burn . I ate at the Sedalia Freddies once if that helps .
Congrats on your 44 yo T-bird. Wonder how many 44 yo Teslas will still be around, Or 24 yo. Or 14 yo.

how will the reparability of structural pack be? any guesses?
Repairing the pack is not a structural issue. The entire pack was designed to be removable in minutes. Since it is sealed, it takes time to get the covers off, since they are bolted on and then sealed with silicon glue to make them absolutely waterproof.
Once they are fixed, which can be relatively simple once you get inside, you just reverse the process. Seal and bolt the covers back on. Install the pack, plug it in, good to go.
If you want to see what this looks like, Gruber Motors has videos on CZcams where they do this from start to finish.

Dealers don't 'fix' things. They 'replace' things. Take a vehicle in for a faulty instrument, they replace the whole cluster. Take a radio in for a blown out light, the replace the whole radio.
Yup that is what they call buisnes...
But you also could take it to a 3rd party shop and they might be able to actually fix it.
Tesla is pretty anti repair
Not to mention that a new battery releases as much CO2 as a gas car does over 100,000km! In other words, you are NOT REDUCING CO2 by driving an EV, especially if you need to replace the batt within 100,000km (which most owners will need to do). Source: World Economic Forum
And most electricity created through coal burning. This is just a new industry, new market, new product, and shaking suckers down!
One of the unforseen benefits of starting with expensive cars and than working your way down is you mostly deal with rich or very resourceful customers

Great as always, can't wait for the next CarTrek.
Btw, Happy Birthday Hoovie!
Tyler, remember the factory want to build and sell vehicles. Tesla doesn't make money on older units on the road except maybe to charge them.
You may want to invest in a Flatbed Tow Truck, considering the problems you have had and continue to have with you fleet of cars.
A full electric one😛

Hoovie, look at Louis Rossmann and his quest for "Right to Repair" that really is the issue your having of repair
That man is always angry.
Hoovie is not having a problem with right to repair. He is having the car repaired there just isn’t anyone close to him that will or can do the repair. He has to ship it to Florida to get it repaired.
@@DctorSkillz1 it’s the autism
Yeah right! Is this the cynic in me? Hoovie just happened to buy the perfect case study Tesla that slotted in with The Electrified Garages key promotional message. Having said that, I have nothing but the highest praise for everything about this CZcams channel and the other automotive bros. You guys have saved me so much time and money living my automotive vicariously. I’m serious. I used to get hyper focused on old bayliners and hoopties, rusty Italian cars old BMWs. No more, I just dose on the wizard, Tyler, etc
When did Jeff Goldblum possess Hoovies body?? Been a while since I last watched and oh boy.... FULL blast Jeff Goldblum.
next: Hoovie purchases an AMC Gremlin. He takes it to the Wizard who recommends the crusher.
Or completely fixes it for $100. lol
The more you hate on Gremlins, the more they increase in value.
Have a 1970 AMC Hornet (car the Gremlin is based on) sitting in the corner of my machine shed. Lovely shade of baby puke green with a white vinyl top, with bright green and red plaid interior... It's not fast, comfortable, or even safe by modern standards. Mostly all original other then tires, brakes, exhaust, clutch, and basic tune up parts. 232 inline 6 and a 4 speed. It still runs and drives and does all the basic tasks a car should do, something I seriously doubt anything built today will be able to say in 51 years.
In 1978 before I had my licence my buddy used to give me rides to high school in his red V-8 3-speed Gremlin with a Craig Power-play 8-track and Jenson co-ax speakers rockin' Robin Trower all the way there, and that little car would burn em in all 3 gears fishtailing like no tomorrow... We loved it!!! His older brother had the more sought after "Javelin".
My very first car, my 6'4" 250+ pound 28 yr career Army Dad insisted. It was a purple with a black stripe, 1973 AMC Gremlin 232 6 cylinder. It came from Europe with a GI and already had rust through. A $39.99 paint job at Earl Sheib and Dad wouldn't let me change the color cause it would loose it's value. As a 16 yr. old in high school at the time and purple wasn't cool at that time. A had to threaten to run it into a tree and kill myself to get my Dad to let me sell it and get something else. I sold it for $1000 and Dad kept the difference. I then bought for $1000, one of the coolest cars in school, a 1966 Chevelle 327/375 hp Black on Black. Redemption! Owed Dad $100 though. Lol!

The battery rebuild centers sound like a business opportunity waiting to happen. There is no excuse for having to replace an entire battery for minor issues that could be rebuilt. If the battery is made up of multiple small battery cells, maybe battery makers need to consider making small battery modules composed of, say 10 or 20 of the small cells, with multiple modules composing a battery, allowing the faulty battery module to be simply pulled out and replaced with a new one. (Think of the individual modules that made up the AI computer HAL 9000 in 2001: A space Odyssey. A tool to pop out a module, pull and replace)
Battery packs : The inevitable 10th year death sentence of every single disposable EV.
I tint my headlights so it works less.
yea never understood this, same with brake lights. Lets make it harder for other people to see me braking and for me to see out front!
@@ForTehNguyen Same here. I wouldn't put tint on any auto lights but brake lights have to be the dumbest thing to tint. I once told a Corvette driver at a stoplight that it was really hard to see his brake lights because of that. His reply? "It came that way." In other words, either he thinks it looks "cool" or is too lazy to remove it. SMH

Great Informative video. I went through your videos, and did not see a follow up video on this car. What ever happened with the car?
Electric cars can turn into massive bricks. Gassers can always be repaired
I see a huge giant E-Waste problem in our future.
lots of cars in good condition are going to sit in dealerships cause it‘s not worth swapping the battery.
And how many BMWs on this channel are big piles of eWaste. Batteries will become cheaper and cheaper and can be swapped in a few hours.
Of course but nobody cares about the damage it's all about short term "solutions"
@@iamwritingrightnow8217 My son had an S that was totaled out for the estimated suspension repair costs after a minor fender bender, the batteries are a concern but if you can't fix the cars and get the parts to fix them then the insurance companies just total them out and they wind up at a CoPart site. Rich's videos show the trials and tribulations of somebody trying to keep them on the road which isn't easy.
@@johnh8268 So I'm supposed to rely on the manufacturer to allow me to swap batteries and shops that I choose? That's a great notion but we used to be able to swap batteries in our cell phones, while you still can it's an involved process and unless you do it through the manufacturer they'll probably have some software logic that will brick it in case a third party battery is used. Don't get me wrong, BMWs are junk but in the case of any Tesla, a lease is your friend.
I feel like this is more how wasteful CARS can be. Have a single capacitor in your ECU fail? gotta replace the whole thing. Instead of replacing a component, you replace a module. This is the scaled up version that just happens to be electric.
It isn't just cars, it's appliances too. I know someone who was quoted $3000 for a new air conditioning system when they managed to fix it by replacing a couple of components costing a few dollars. I was told I needed a new aircon and I fixed it by soldering a wire across a corroded track. Same with fridges, washers, phones, all kind of stuff.
This sort of thing is why the right to repair movement exists.
@@nicholasvinen if the company has to analyse, prepare, repare or replace it takes them time and money because a technician has to do it. That's why we need lower taxes, so more people can make a living on reparing with reasonable taxes other people stuff
