- A house full of surprises: Sliding or pivoting panels tranform each space. The Murphy House, designed and owned by architect Richard Murphy 2016 was named “House of the Year” by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

We never got a tour of the house. This is a bad introduction to a what looks like a wonderful home.

Not sure about the bathtub in the bedroom, but otherwise it's an architectural masterpiece!
it a small area... the bathtub clearly made for when he need hot bath not shower... i seen bath and in the bed frame before so.....
How to devaluate the word "masterpiece". It's a funny house, planned by a man for his own usage. I wouldn't pick that house over a more traditional one.
But considering how contemporary architecture has been following twisted ideas for a while now, I guess it's not that bad.
Modern hotel room design does not only put the bathtub in the bedroom, but the shitter, too. Of course what they call design is more of a cost-saving measure.
Funny story: in a close-by hotel you have to get the 'classic' room to have the WC apart from the bedroom.

Great stuff... but honestly I highly doubt that this house is comfortable when he is 82 years old....

He'll probably develop high strength in really uncommon muscles from pulling, turning and switchings all these levers, doors and traps xD

Imagine you forgot how to slide something to get to a thing so you slide all of it and it becomes the biggest puzzle of the year
Let's hope he has a map for all of that, otherwise each day would be a treasure hunt
Each time a new comer enters his house he is asked if he has mental and health issues, then he gets the *traveler's backpack*, a 42 pages maps and gets notified they cut the whole amazon rain forest just to make that map. XD

Not at all. The color and the way the facade is broken up to resemble the other houses on the block integrates this design extremely well.
Admire the passion and ambition. Reminds me of the former American folk art museum in nyc, seems to be a bit overworked, overflowing with ideas. Hope he gets many clients to spread those ideas out into more projects, with gracious space to allow the ideas to breathe.
The moment I saw the corner window detail and courtyard wall finish with its tile row color selection - yelled out "Scarpa!" LOL

What amazes me is how he blend this modern house with the other historic buildings around it. And the openings give a really helpful passive cooling so this can also go well at tropical countries like mine. Im also studying architecture and these ideas are helpful.
So true. I was surprised how well it integrates with the other houses, unlike much of modern architecture that insists on a jarring distinction.
I believe he also did a great job in the integretion with the rest of the houses and being modern at the same time.
I've always loved how sliding panels can transform a room, to make a whole house this way was a real treat! It has so much novelty, using it would always create an experience that reminds me of childhood love of hidden chambers and 80s transformers.
It is cool, but ridiculous at the same time!

Same, if you're someone who wants to live in a house for aesthetic reasons then this is house is perfect. But if you're lazy af and is quite forgetful then you better live in a traditional house instead.

I once blew up renovation of a house because government was too much of a problem.
Maybe they expected to get money shuffled under the table.
In Germany there is something called "Bebauungsplan" (Building Plan) that is decided by the local authorities and gives precise information about the colour, shape etc. a newly build house may have. It also considers things like the shape of the roof and so on. Pretty German. Where does it lead to? All German cities look just plain boring. All houses look greyish or have a very light colouring (like a grey-blue or vanilla yellow) but in the end it gives you depressions, especially in the dark months of winter. It is so refreshing to see the colourful and way more aesthetic architecture in the southern countries. But if you try something outstanding in Germany it would be refused. NO COLOURS. JUST ARBEITEN.

Although the house does stand out in its environment, it is not that unsympathetic to its surroundings. It is very nicely done.

I love the Venetian plaster accent walls in the house. That material is luminous and will subtly carry light through.

Why do the British insist on getting angry every time someone tries to build a house that looks like it came from the 21st century?
They like the colours grey and brown and on a human being red or white.
The British didn't get angry at the building,he said that some of the people in the area weren't happy and the area is Edinburgh which is in Scotland which means the Scottish people there where "angry" The only British person was the architect narrating the video who was pushing the idea

@@banaft1664 I recognize that there is a difference but the cultures are similar enough for the rule to apply generally to most of the British isles. The United Kingdom does not like anyone tampering with their Georgian aesthetic.

Marvelous. I bet the places next door are cold, poorly lit caves in comparison. It's not a pretty shoebox like so many modern things these days. It appears to have Japanese elements both functionally and aesthetically. I think it adds to the neighborhood.

The ceiling that closes off the skylight seems counterproductive. Would it even save energy? It seems like air still would flow from somewhere else upstairs into that space above anyways.
you need to close it so it easy to cool in summer.. it still a small house so yeah i would like it that way... this a man who put a bath next to his bed so i doubt he care much about logic.... the house seem to be most testing design and prove of concept....

That isn't a micro-bathtub. It is a normal sized.
And why not?
If you only take a bath a few times per year a "normal" location for the baththub would be a waste of space. That way it is out of the way, but you still have a bathtub.

frankly i think the bath in the bedroom gave it house of the year. imagine waking up and waiting for the bathtub to fill while you still lay curled up in bed under the blankets. This guy's a genius!
No there are a lot of details that they didn’t even touch on that makes it house of the year. However I’m not sure I agree with the judgement, this house is stuck about 20 - 50 years in the past. I like it but not house of the year. Perhaps it’s his connections that gave it this position.
