The correct answer to the question “How many guitars do I need?” Can be found in this simple equation:
(Current number of guitars) + 1 = the number of guitars you need.

Happy 57 and a Half Birthday Rick! 🍰
I started playing in 1991...I’ve purchased 3 guitars & I’ve received 2 as gifts over the decades.
1992 Randy Rhoads Jackson Offset V (purchased)
    2009 Les Paul Studio (purchased)
2012 Fender Jazzmaster (w Whammy bar) (purchased)
    1978 Les Paul Standard (gift)
    2018 Martin Acoustic/Electric OMC-15M (gift)
I’ve always preferred sponsoring music classrooms so children can have guitars and other instruments as my “needs” were met long ago and I’ve chosen to defer my “wants” to fulfill children’s “needs.”
I’d like to have many more guitars but I like children experiencing guitars more than adding to my collection.
I’m not sure if I’m doing the right or wrong thing but it’s the path I’ve chosen that makes me happy; however, I LOVE seeing other musicians with crazy guitar inventories like Rick. How fun would it be to spend a day in Rick’s studio playing so many beautiful instruments!! 🤘😊🤘

I just bought a Telecaster this week. I've bought and sold several over the years, this is a pretty nice one. So now for the first time I've got a Strat, Tele, and Les Paul all at once. I've also got a nice Taylor acoustic. I think I'm covered now. Except for something oddball like a Danelectro. But they're cheap. Maybe a Rickenbacker 12. They're not cheap, but I might need to do it. A Gretsch Duo Jet would be nice. And my Tele and Strat both have maple fingerboards, so I kind of need a Fender with a rosewood fingerboard. Or both. But that's it. Oh, except maybe a PRS, those things are SWEET!

I was trying to get a clean tone out of my strat, because I was just playing it and it was clean, now it was distorted; and there was this guy behind me ( this was outside) talking about a white lp custom, and how they age. I gave up on the strat, because I got hungry and got a sandwich, so I could listen to this guy and have a snack. Then I woke up and realized I was listening to youtube in my sleep. I just want you people to know that Rick still makes sense, and is quite compelling in many different realms. So, the next time you think he might be wandering and droning on and putting you to sleep, let him. You'll still learn something, and, enjoy it.

have to say - I was a bit of a gear head before, especially when I was an audio engineer, collecting gear,. and even now I have too many guitars and basses and too many drums. BUT with age, I have gradually moved away from that and now the biggest fan I am of Tommy Emmanuel, who has essentially one guitar (which he plays to destruction usually) - and every note he plays comes from his heart and soul. its like he massages your heart with his fingers. no effects. no backline. no big production. no quantising. just a beat up guitar and his playing. Love it.

You know, I found a way to make my G.A.S. more manageable. I try and find incredible deals, or at least have something to trade-in so I can bring the price down of the gear I want to acquire. I've set a price in my mind that is both reasonable and that does not put me into debt. If the gear I want is far out of my price range, then I do a ton of research to convince myself I don't need it. I check my budget, do the math. When I see that it is unreasonable, my mind tends to let go. This is how I counter the impulsivity. Another thing I do, is seek out more affordable alternatives. Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience. Cheers

Sweet PRS. Really wish they put out more solid finishes on their core models. Apparently, one of the pillars of that company has been about producing instruments that get treated like paintings more than tools to _make_ those proverbial paintings.
I’m glad to see more CZcamsrs break out of the gear addict mentality. Its encouraging for recovering gear junkies like me. When I realize I’ve worked to cut my stash of 14 instruments in half, it puts a smile on my face. Big weight off my shoulders.
Lastly, it’s a beautiful thing how technology keeps evolving in a way that empowers guitarists and bassists to make better and better quality recordings at home. In the 90’s, there wasn’t a multitude of DAWs, sims, attenuators, IR’s, plugins etc, as we have available now.

I go along with the theory of having different gear available for different sounds, but if having 20 Strats lining your walls is what floats your boat, have at it. I've had to downsize lately, partly out of space considerations, and partly to fund studio gear but it's all good. ( although if I had it to do over, I would have kept the vintage Hi-Watt 50 watt. Selling that stung a little bit....ouch.)

I think it's one thing if all this gear is part of your work as a producer because these are not toys they are tools and you know what you're doing with them. It's very obvious that you've worked very hard to be where you're at today and your tools are well-earned. I am really glad that you created this channel.

Great video, Rick. One thing I would say is this: For those of us in the real world, we don't get to expense gear on our tax return. One thing that makes me a bit jealous, is that as a studio owner, you probably get to depreciate (or section 179) your gear acquisitions. That means you get to buy items and take a tax break! Maybe I should start a studio on the side!!! Great vids, as always. Love your content.

Gorgeous color on that PRS. I'm holding a Kiesel CT3 with a Candy Red Metalic that is very similar. In my personal collection, which isn't huge, I cover many bases. The Fenders, several Kiesel/Carvins that cover the PRS style and Les Paul style. I don't play enough guitar live to justify more, but there are several I'd love to have.

After I got my Carvin, I couldn't believe that I had played anything else beforehand! The quality difference between a USA made, custom shop guitar and a Korean RG is remarkable... plus after hearing so many horror stories about Gibsons arriving exactly the way that one you ordered did! Makes me feel lucky that I've never been a fan of Gibsons lol I sold all my extra stuff and even stuff wasn't extra ... I do my own amp and guitar maintenance luckily... digital modeling is cool and all but it's not the same as the real tube amp tone and saturation with real celestions... nothing beats that for me personally

  •  Před 4 lety +1

Great advice there, Rick. Any chance you could do some demos of using tube amps with different load boxes? While we have options such as Kemper, AxeFX, DAW plug-in's etc, there will be loads of your readers with real amps (and looking to keep them) wondering what new (quiet) options are available for home recording.

I'm 3/4 through this video about g.a.s., and Rick is currently discussing several different speaker emulators he owns. Now we're discussing a custom pedal that you can add before everything else... LMAO, Rick, leave the minimalist discussion to 5 watt world. I love that when you discuss a particular player or style, you have the specific style or gear in your hand.
Gear is like partners. You just need the one, but if you want variety, and can keep them loved and properly maintained, who's to tell you how to live your life?!?
    Cheers, Rick!

Thomas Blug has videos where he goes in a studio and captures the sound of all their expensive guitar amplifiers by making adjustments on his Amp 1 guitar amplifier with a nanotube. More so now that he has his Mercury edition. Most guitarists go beyond their guitar amplifier's sound with pedals anyway. Universal Audio has plug-ins to capture the sound of the major guitar amplifiers when recording.

    Wsup Rick,
you mentioned that you have arthritis in your fingers or something of that nature. There's a book called, "Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method", written by Aaron L. Mattes. The republished book is blue with two pictures on the cover with a year "2000" copyright. It really helped me keep my fingers healthy over the last decade. And I'm an Army Vet who's practiced boxing, wall handstands, and many things with my fingers and hands over the last 8 to 10 years. So I'd give it a try to see if it works for you. They still sale it online.
So the exercises for for the fingers at least once a day for a while to see how that wotks for you. And it doesn't take long to do them.
    -Best of wishes bud

For me the path from novice to pro is the path of: "Bang for the buck" to "Buck for the bang". From multipurpose to modular, and as a prosumer without a revenue stream - yes - choice paralysis is very real. Slowly weeding out the less than stellar parts of the signal path. Starts adding up when you start looking at power conditioning, sonic treatment, patch cables, good stands/hardware, maintenance, etc. only as good as the weakest link.

This is the problem with any hobby type stuff. Golf Clubs, guitars, cars, motorcycles, swiss watches, etc. it is not a guitar/music specific problem. I think the thing is, you either have to be prudent, or regularly sell stuff. There is also a trader's concept called "scalping", which is a concept worth learning.
