Reading these lyrics, it seems like it was the Biblical Uriah speaking. He was a loyal soldier (officer in the army) of King David who was in the battlefield while David stayed in his palace banging Batsheba, Uriah’s wife. To cover a possible scandal, David called Uriah to come home and make love to his wife Bathseba in case David impregnated her in their fling. Uriah stayed in the battlefield because of his loyalty to fight for Israel. David then ordered his men to put Uriah in front of the battlefield and abandon him for an easy killing by the enemy army. Uriah was killed and King David took Bathsheba as his 8th wife. The fruit of their dark love affair? , King Solomon, who had 700 wives and 300 concubines in his lifetime. What a freaking messed-up sinful story. Uriah probably knew what was going and in his dying moment he was probably bitter, questioning the purpose of God or even his existence. He knew he became a pawn, to die so David can continue his “greatness”. in spite of his evil deeds. What an injustice to Uriah!

For those who wants to know the meaning of the lyrics, the song is being singed from the perspective of a soldier from Israel, whose wife was having an affair with king David, at the moment king David of the kingdom of Israel, Before starting the affair, the king David was able to see the soldiers wife from the window of hes room while she was showering at night (From here comes: you saw her bathing on the roof, the beauty and the moonlight overthrew you), from this moment the king David fell in love with her, and started to hit on her,) then ahead soldier says( and remember when i moved in you? the holly dark was moving too) which means sexually, she was being banged by her Husband and the king David too, and it describes how the passion of the wife for the soldier was dying while he was happy with her (Holly Dark) the big problem comes when King David fears the soldier is aware of the affair, and given to the laws of older Israel, the women who haves a affair when having a husband was condemned to be killed, so to avoid this, king David sent the husband (Soldier) to the front lines of a war they were having at the moment with another kingdom so that he was killed quickly and the king David in this way could continue hes romance with the women...very sad story

For me I believe its about all the temptations that come in our lives to destroy us, yes its talking about David but also talks about Samson when he fell in love with a evil woman that later betrayed him he told her what was the reason of his strength which was his hair and she ended it up cutting it off for money. Its all about the temptation that is suppose to destroy us, but in the end we become stronger and learn to put all our trust in God.

Actually if you read The Word (Bible) it is in reference to King David and his repentance. The Bible states, David was a man after God’s own heart...and then he does this... He committed a sin worthy of death in those days..(adultery) He slept with a married mans wife and then killed him because the shame and guilt was great. It’s a cry towards mercy. So it is about God. “Hallelujah” is the highest praise, therefore when one sins, as an act of reverence to God almighty who deserves our highest praise and repented heart we confess our downfalls and struggles and as an acceptance of frailty and a need for a savior.

I'm now thankfully almost a year into recovery from addiction and I played this song a lot during active addiction. I felt miserable just to feel normal and was in the midst of losing my wife to divorce because I couldn't stop. I wasn't a good father to my daughter either..I was literally broken and this song used to bring me to tears in hopes of a different life. Now after finally getting the help I needed and have been blessed enough to make it right with my wife and have since done everything I can to be a great father to my 4 year old I like to listen to this and it's amazing how different the song feels. It used to bring sad thoughts and feelings. Now it brings what I think this song was meant to bring. And for me that's in a word....victory.

Entire song is from Books of the Bible.
King David's wife hated him playing music for the Lord, said he looked like a fool. He was baffled why she so hated him playing for God. This is the part where the bring the Arc of the Covenant into town and play music and dance as they do so.
King David stealing the soldier's wife (saw her on rooftop bathing), and sending him (the soldier) into the front lines so he would get killed and David could have his wife to himself).
Samson and Delilah, where Delilah had him tied to the chair, then gave up his secret that his hair was the the secret to his strength.
The part about living here before and the flag on the Marble arch may be referring to Elijah who was said to have come back multiple times as different people (some thought John the Baptist was Elijah reincarnated
    - OR -
That part could be referring to the writer of Ecclesiastes, who calls himself the Teacher, was the man who had it all-rich, wise, powerful, and possessed of everything he needed to be happy. Except he wasn’t, and he took a whole book to write about all the things in life that couldn’t give him a sense of purpose.
I also think the part about moving inside her could be talking about the baby Jesus in Mary before he was born (sharing the Holy darkness).
    - OR -
Is the rather descriptive (and for the time graphic) love story of Solomon and a pheasant girl from Shulam (The Song of Solomon)

Its so crazy, Ive heard this songs so many times over the years. I liked the sound of it but never knew the words until today. And honestly, i was confused because I always thought it was a worship and praise type song. But understanding its true meaning now,(thanks to another commentor-awesome), definitly gave me a whole different perspective for me.
On one hand, I was dissapointed that its not the worship and praise song I believed it to be, But on the other hand it made those people and thier situation so relatable to. I think this is the only song ever heard from the Bible days that wasnt directly about God. No disrespect to God, but its kinda interesting to hear about something different from that period of time.

+Morgan Smith Yeah. most of the song, he could just be making biblical references and relating them to his life, but the last verse kinda ruins that. Don't forget what the word "Hallelujah" means, it means "praise the lord". The last verse goes like this:
I did my best, it wasn't much (I tried to do the right thing, but didn't really)
I couldn't feel so I tried to touch ("touching"; was what I did, the wrong thing from the previous verse)
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya (I am reasserting to the listener that I did the wrong thing, and I am admitting it)
And even though it wall went wrong (Even though what happened wasn't what should have happened)
I'll stand before the lord of song with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah (I will make myself vulnerable to "the lord of song" and all I will be saying is "praise you")
The only things you have to decide on are, what does "touch" mean, and who is "the lord of song". He says he could not feel, that's why he touched. Most people see this as emotional vs physical. Or, spiritual vs flesh for the more religious approach. We'll leave that for now, but moving on to "the lord of song". This person has to be some powerful person, I suppose it could be a parent or maybe an idol or someone you look up to. Whoever this person is, they find "touching" to be wrong.
So do they find being physical over emotional to be wrong, or being worried about the flesh versus the spirit to be wrong? I think most people would agree that being concerned with physical only is bad, but this isn't something you would really have to apologize to anyone but yourself and your partner for. So, if your partner or yourself are "the lord of song", then that works. But, I don't think that makes sense to many people. Therefore it has to be flesh vs spirit, and therefore it has to be, at the very lest, some sort of god, most likely the christian one. This is reasserted by the line "Hallelujah". Who would you say that to? A god.

And maybe I'm not ready for a forever distance but I'm getting there with help from the person I can be forever close with, from myself, and from you. From you staying a forever distance away.

Just to clarify about the lyrics: Cohen's lyrical poetry and his view that "many different hallelujahs exist" is reflected in wide-ranging covers with very different intents or tones, allowing the song to be "melancholic, fragile, uplifting [or] joyous" depending on the performer: The Welsh singer-songwriter John Cale, the first person to record a cover version of the song (in 1991), promoted a message of "soberness and sincerity" in contrast to Cohen's dispassionate tone; The cover by Jeff Buckley, an American singer-songwriter, is more sorrowful and was described by Buckley as "a hallelujah to the orgasm". Crowe interpreted the song as a "very sexual" composition that discussed relationships; Wainwright offered a "purifying and almost liturgical" interpretation;and Guy Garvey of the British band Elbow made the hallelujah a "stately creature" and incorporated his religious interpretation of the song into his band's recordings. Ref: Wikipedia.

This song is perfect for when you've gone through having a friendship go up in smoke & you find yourself wondering what went wrong. A perfect Hallelujah is a friendship that works for everyone involved & where everyone is happy with each other. A broken Hallelujah is when you start asking yourself why the people who broke off their friendship with you acted the way they did, why they feel no remorse for doing so & why they quit trusting you, even if you never gave them a reason not to trust you in the first place.
