Buckley's is in my opinion, this one is great too, but his... I donno, it's just heavy, what was to come shortly after that adds to the weight. I dont think any covers of this are bad really, except country ones lol..... But no, Fuck country for real though.
The 'heaviness' is what makes this cover so damn good. All broken hallelujahs resonate in it, every word feels so true. Unlike all the other covers I've listened to so far - for me, they go over the edge, are too whiny, packed with excess, fake emotions. My opinion only, you don't need to agree; yet, 'heavy Wainwright' is the only cover of the song I can enjoy or even stand. ;)
With the greatest respect to both Leonard Cohen who wrote this song and also Jeff Buckley who created an amazing cover of this beautiful song, I have to admit that for me personally, something about Rufus Wainwright's version just really resonates with me above the rest.. Well done.

This song reminds of the word hiraeth. A homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past. Whenever I drink a few beers, I find myself back at this song and shedding a tear.
That is exactly what I feel, but I was never able to put words to it. The place I grieve is my life before my husband died. 26 years this month. Thank you for giving me the words.

“And it’s not a cry you can hear at night, it’s not somebody who’s seen the light, it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah...” I don’t have a favorite part because I love the whole song 👑❤️😇
None of the other versions actually touch me emotionally like this one does. I can't listen to it unless I'm alone because whenever I listen to it it makes me cry, even when I was a little kid it made me cry
A lot of people say that's god touching your heart, I have those sometimes with certain songs, the first time my parents brought me into church and I understood what they where saying I started crying, not because I was sad but I just got hit with this big feeling on me and couldn't stop crying
Regardless of your views of religion, the main message given by this song is about human perseverance and the resilience that people carry threw every step of there lives and the fact that people can survey any hardship and overcome difficulty after difficulty is what make this song resonate so strongly with any person.
Geoffrey Robb Also depends on who does the cover. The lyrics are ambiguous enough that anyone can portray anything regardless of authorial intent. But yeah I think what you said is what Cohen said, however I might need to check that. For example this cover is going for a more somber tone.
For those who care for analyzation, think this song is Definetly special and set apart from the rest, some songs lures the sad out of you in a peaceful way. Like it's okay to feel something or anything. Also there's a beautiful comfort about this song aswell. It draws aggression and depth but in such a state that it brings you tears and a release. Overall, it kind of hugs your ears and understands you for a few minutes. Music doesn't judge. True love is priceless and never corrodes or looses its value. It is eternal. It may be pitchblack and the hurricane may be so strong it seems like judgement day, but the love still remains. The circumstance doesn't change its value, despite not always being able to see it or forgetting that despite the storm it is in the palm of your hands. And loving someone perfectly is not seeing someone through rosecolored glasses and certainly not seeing them through pitchblack shades. It is loving them for no more and no less than what they are, and not assuming you know everything about them when you dont, but loving them for exactly what you know themvto be, and passionately wanting to know more. Not all that glitters is gold, and the sweetest music isn't always the loudest.

This was my oldest daughter;s favorite songs. Now she is paradise with the lord. Every time I hear this music I know she is in a better place and has no more pain in her little body. Just fort myself and my wife I wish the sorry we have would ease up a little.
Out of the hundreds of songs i 've heard in my life, no other song tears me apart like this version of this song. I don't believe that anyone will ever sing it as perfectly as Rufus. My tears start to flow and i start shaking within 30 seconds. Every. single. time. My cheeks become soaking wet. I choke up so much i find it hard to breathe. My chest stings where my heart is. Its frightening. And English isn't even my native language! For some reason, i have connected this song with the tragic marriage of my parents more than anything else. To all future parents out there, please always keep in mind, a failed marriage is not simply a bad call with serious consequences in your personal life only. It can be a soul-shattering experience to any children you bring into this world. Do not take marriage and parenting lightly. A 45 year old who never got over it, begs you.
I can't listen to this song without crying. It was my Grandma's favorite song and they played it for her while she was dying. I had to sing it at her funeral and I still hate that I could only make it half-way through without breaking down. I finally thought I could handle listening to it two years later, but I can't. It's a beautiful song, but it's one I've tried to erase from my memory. Show the people you love that you love them before it's too late everyone. Maybe then you won't be broken down by a song.
The best version. His raspy guttural voice and emotion has me in tears. Beautiful, absolutely superb. And it's almost as if he lets his voice lag behind the music and gets pulled along by the music? Has a kind of lazy sound lol but it works
Let's make this clear for everyone wondering. No, this song is not bashing religion, it simply uses religious references to tell a story. Its melancholy undertones imply that the song is about a failed marriage.
I think the reason for the extreme liking to this song is that Rufus Wainwright stays heartbreakingly consistent throughout the entire song and we can follow it so easily all which make it easy to listen to. It is clean, concise and we don't have to struggle to hear the lyrics we already know them and it becomes us just as great song must.

[Verse 1] Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing "Hallelujah" [Chorus] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Verse 2] Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah [Chorus] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Verse 3] Baby I've been here before I know this room, I've walked this floor I used to live alone before I knew you And I've seen your flag on the marble arch Love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah [Chorus] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Verse 4] There was a time you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show it to me, do you? And remember when I moved in you The holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah [Chorus] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Verse 5] You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light in every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah [Chorus] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Verse 6] Maybe there's a God above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah [Chorus] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah [Verse 7] I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah [Chorus] Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah
@@scintillam_dei -- Leonard Cohen wrote many, many verses, and sang at least two versions himself, while other artists have picked and chosen which verses to sing. It's quite a versatile song.
I second Molly's comment below. No one can sing this song, quite like Rufus does. There is a quiet yet poignant way that Rufus has of singing this song that is hauntingly beyond beautiful. Thank you. ❤
Adam Henderly I'm going to commit suicide on February 15th and I'm going to play this song along with "How could this happen to me". Farewell and have a happy Valentine's day.
lenovotny keep ur head up buddy, no matter what ur facing , never give up, no matter what happens , don't get discouraged, everyone has obstacles to overcome , the night is darkest before the dawn, and pain is weakness leaving the body, we're all in this together, I wish u the best, good luck, and keep on pushing
It's about the futility of human romantic relationships and definitely has sex it.... He literally talks "moving in" someone and "every breath (they) drew was hallelujah." Do people really think this is a religious song?
Even though I don't think I fully understand the meaning of this song, I have some ideas, from my own personal understanding. But I still think it's so beautiful. It makes me feel so.. Melancholia
The song is about King David and his third wife, Bathsheba. She was married to another general at the time but David fell in love with her and purposely ordered Bathsheba's husband to take part in a suicide mission, thus making her available.
To me, its about an individual's spiritual journey which varies from individual to individual. The first verses are of course the spiritual journeys of Biblical figures, but the last is that of the writer of the song, the profound thing that he learned from life through the pain of experience. My two cents anyway.
This songs means so much to my family. It was the song that played at my Great Grandma funeral. I sing it every time I'm baking. She is the reason I love music so much. She was always humming and singing in the kitchen. Her being apart of my life is the sweetest treat this world could give me.
Blake Ledger This version of the song is not about religion, but the original version is. Not that it's religious exactly, but Leonard Cohen is definitely playing around with the concepts of God and the divine. I love these lyrics too, which are more about a lost relationship.
A million covers of this song. No one sings it like he does.

Sending prayers your way, dear
"All I ever learned from love was how to shoot at someone who out-drew you". Sooo profound. So true.
Rip Leonard cohen you wrote one of the saddest songs that makes me cry whenever I listen to it.
Pray for you👍😭😭

BEST version ever.
Heard it first time in Shrek :)
Me too :)
The first Shrek movie was the best :D
Shrek is love, Shrek is life.

Annabcoolforever I heard on a video of Supernatural

This song will forever remind me of my grampa who sadly passed away 1 week ago. I love you so much grampa.
It only means you care and there isn't anything wrong with that my friend nothing at all.
We all broken by the beauty of what touchsr our human souls . We are meant to be broken, in the best way, not through lack of love but because of it.
This makes me want to watch the first shrek movie over again.
Right!
me too
I am gonna do that too
I listened to this and watched all the Shrek Movies 2 has to be my favorite
Be grateful I gave your comment the 69th like
Ahhhhhhhh.......Like caramel, so smooth and sweet, and always right on the money. Perfection and grace. Thank you.
The best version. His raspy guttural voice and emotion has me in tears. Beautiful, absolutely superb. And it's almost as if he lets his voice lag behind the music and gets pulled along by the music? Has a kind of lazy sound lol but it works
Anybody listening to this song in December 2020?
Everyone says that Jeff Buckley's is the best, but I prefer this.
Same
same.
agreed
I rly don't know I listen to both of them so many times and I honestly can't say which one I like more but they are both amazing at singing it
Wainwright sounds way too monotone.... Jeff Buckley absolutely perfected this song. No question.
Beautiful song

I’m suppose to be singing this song at my moms aunts funeral. So this is the best version I could find
Did you sing it? Sorry for your loss.
@@mattd9692 I did
I’m Christian but it’s the blessing of god HALLELUJAH
Rufus Wainwright you own this song!
Let's make this clear for everyone wondering. No, this song is not bashing religion, it simply uses religious references to tell a story. Its melancholy undertones imply that the song is about a failed marriage.
"melancholy imdertones"
Your writing style reminds me of that of a shitty indie artist.
Nice stalking
I'm in your garden.
+Jake M. a beautiful curse.
+Ibuix LastName To be fair, the latter half of the OT seems to be a weird failed marriage between Israel and a crazy Yahweh. Sorry to be redundant.
A fallen hero, the one who we wanted, faded away, had a chance, but all hope was lost, and the last we heard of him was WAH
This is the best cover, period.
Exactly he is a professional with a fantastic voice knowing such an emotional song needs minimum added emotion.
Most people: beautiful!!!!!
Me: YES SHREK DADDY!!!!!
Even though this wasn't the version of the song used in Shrek, AGREED!!
Rufus Wainwright did indeed sing the "Hallelujah" that was in Shrek. I don't know where you got that info but it's incorrect.
+Kolbe Tucker no John Cale sings the version from Shrek

Look at the tenth song in the Shrek soundtrack and then look at the artist. Who told you it was John Cale?
+Kolbe Tucker in the actual movie that's who is singing it. Watch the movie I guarantee that it's John Cale
Simply, stunningly, exquisitely sung by the one and only Rufus! ❤
This song playing at my funeral. I love this song & my beautiful husband sang it solo in the Harvest church Christmas show.. love and miss you Johnny 💐🐊.. Joanie
Did anybody come here because they actually like this song (I'm looking at you shrek memers..)

I like the song too.

I finna cry everytime i listen to this. I love you shrek🥺😔
[Verse 1]
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing "Hallelujah"
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
[Verse 2]
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
[Verse 3]
Baby I've been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
[Verse 4]
There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
[Verse 5]
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
[Verse 6]
Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
[Verse 7]
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
[Chorus]
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Or I could just look at the screen
@@sogondesnuts780 Nice to have a condensed version.
@@scintillam_dei -- Leonard Cohen wrote many, many verses, and sang at least two versions himself, while other artists have picked and chosen which verses to sing. It's quite a versatile song.
..... Hallelujah !! La plus belle interprétation, pour moi ..... Celle qui me parle et me touche le plus. MERCI
This song is beautiful and meaningful!

I second Molly's comment below. No one can sing this song, quite like Rufus does. There is a quiet yet poignant way that Rufus has of singing this song that is hauntingly beyond beautiful. Thank you. ❤
This is the best version hands down, and I love the song in general because it's the only song that actually makes me teary-eyed every time I hear it
They sung this at my Grandma's funeral. I cried when I listened to this.
Adam Henderly 😭😭😭😭😭😭😥😢 I feel really bad for u
I appreciate it very much. It was the lowest point in my life. I lost both of my Grandma's that same year and my rabbit.

It's about the futility of human romantic relationships and definitely has sex it.... He literally talks "moving in" someone and "every breath (they) drew was hallelujah."
Do people really think this is a religious song?
PRAISE AND HONOR TO THE MOST HIGH FOREVER AND EVER ❤
Don't be silly.
I think a lot more people like this cover because the melody is so soft with the piano and the way he carries the notes is just amazing.
@@mikesexton3426 no it's actually about sex. It uses religious imagery, but it is actually about sex and a failed relationship.
shrek is love
shrek is life
To me, its about an individual's spiritual journey which varies from individual to individual. The first verses are of course the spiritual journeys of Biblical figures, but the last is that of the writer of the song, the profound thing that he learned from life through the pain of experience. My two cents anyway.
Rest In Peace Danny
This song reminds me of you

My favourite rendition of this song.
This songs means so much to my family. It was the song that played at my Great Grandma funeral. I sing it every time I'm baking. She is the reason I love music so much. She was always humming and singing in the kitchen. Her being apart of my life is the sweetest treat this world could give me.
This was my best friend's favorite song ever, we'd sing it together all the time. He was only in his early 30s. RIP Aaron 🙏 😔 💙
Im an atheist but i love this song. love and beauty. thats all the world needs.
Well, this song isn't really about religion.
Blake Ledger This version of the song is not about religion, but the original version is. Not that it's religious exactly, but Leonard Cohen is definitely playing around with the concepts of God and the divine.
I love these lyrics too, which are more about a lost relationship.
