  • Just in case I forgot to mention this in previous videos (and I probably did) Here's a quick spec sheet:
Carisma SCA-1E Prairie Wolf (The Vanimal)
    Motor/ESC: Ruddog 16T 5-slot 550, Hobbywing 1080WP
    Servo: AGFRC A73CHLW
Tires/Wheels: Class 1 JConcepts Landmines, Injora 6-spoke alloy beadlocks
    Radio: Radiolink RC4GS
...and I don't know If I confirmed it in the video, but the shocks are indeed fitted with 63mm Element springs, blue (2.09lbs/in) in the front and grey (1.49lbs/in) in the rear. The shock oil is Losi 35wt.

LOVE this! I am happy the iconic name stuck 😁. If you can imagine a 48 year-old man-child driving this ridiculous van through the Rubicon and taking it to MX parks with bikes in the back next to his bed roll. That was the owner of the Vanimal 🙌. I can't believe how much better the Carisma performs too. I'm liking the TE37 copies and it's great those Landmines are performing well with the stock foams. I have a set of those earmarked for my Class1 build That tree cutting quote looks like numbers that would have me working the chainsaw myself for a few days.

With regards to the steering blocks on the front axle, we normally turn the housing 180 degrees so they're facing the rear. It improves the steering angle for sure. One issue is the retainer spring on the driveshafts. Put some heat shrink over them and shrink, stops them catching etc. The shocks need a little green slime inside around the seals too.
I've recently found your channel and am loving your style and content. Thank you fella.

These take a beating! They seem “cheap” but are super tough

You've got some great results there. As you say it does need a bit more steering though. The brushless motor snob in us does make you more aware of lack of brushed drag brake especially small throttle input roll on... well done to you sir and is awesome to see a fairly decent looking van body for a change of style.
    Cheers mate 👍

Just did some wheeling with the Banana today, one of the only rigs here on a brushed 540, and honestly, it feels like almost no drag brake at all. The Castle Slates have ruined me.

Just got one of these and I put in a 45t Hackmoto brushed motor and a 1080 in it, the drag brake is great and nice modulation. Also installed 100mm axial shocks that I had leftover from the straight axle conversion kit, way better than stock. I used what I had laying around for upgrading and I am quite pleased with the results so far.

The van is just fun, isn't it? Horrendous departure angle, but we allow it.

Great video, I love your dry commentary and the cat. I'm also waiting on a shipment from Hong Kong. They tell me the carrier is waiting on space availability.

I brought one of these after watching your videos I put class 1 hyrax on and changed motor esc and it goes more places than my brothers element

Carisma is criminally under-represented here in the US. I still want to get a Coyote so I can try one out on Class 2 tires.

To get more steering flip your c-hubs & the aluminum steering link from hot racing for original scx10 fits perfect to replace that plastic link

I’m curious how Vanimal performs side hilling against Blue Sky

  • @polishguywithhardtospellna8227

I wonder how surpass 540 plus will hold brake and will it be even smoother by being 4pole 5slot with neodymium magnets. I won't have any comparison smoothwise, as i'm not entirely convinced still if i wanna get back to hobby and into crawlers :-/
Did order some parts already though and it's almost here. Got ultra cheap all metal and carbon scx10 clone prior, but not sure it was a good choice, thinking to swap to rgt 86100 pro kit, which is great value on banggood too.
Got that 540 plus for around $45 from Ali

For whatever reason, it seems like all of those Surpass motors are 2S max, and I don't run 2S in any of my crawlers-- it's just 3S and 4S.

@@CrawlerCanyon 540 plus(shiny cnc can) 20t and 25t specifically are capable of 3S in the table on surpass hobby site, and i got 20t just cause it was cheaper, but only 20&25t were available in the listing i got it from. While 13t and 16t were sold out at that ~$45 price. Normally they go around $55 if one wants full choice. So i have 3s lipo, and got compatible motor by luck of unavailability :-) (planned on lower T)
John Holmes said on forum about surpass 540 plus: "Its a split two pole, not four. Four pole brushed would require two brushes at 90 degree angle , or four equally spaced.
Stronger magnets than what I use have lower temp rating. I use the highest temp neo magnets, and tune the airgap based on flux density of the grade. Both methods work, but its cheaper to use high strength low temp magnets, and the performance fades quickly as the motor warms up."
Soo maybe it wasn't such a bargain? However, it's power is a lot more than surpass 550 5 slot at same turn, so maybe temp fading will still be worth it for shorter, lighter motor?
Regarding 550 5slot, you're right specs are saying 2S, but i'm pretty sure loads of people run them with 3S and complete disregard to that spec, never mention it, so i'm boggled.

My inner cheapskate blanches at the notion of "risking" on a motor at that pricepoint-- because in that $50-60 range live some genuinely good brushed motors (HH Torquemaster Expert, Tekin HD) that are known quantities. This is the same reason I don't own a "fancy" brushed ESC like a Holmes BR-XL-- by the time I get that ESC and a decent motor for it, I could just buy another Castle Copperhead + Slate. Those Slate motors have drag brake on par with throwing out an anchor.

      @polishguywithhardtospellna8227 Před 2 lety

@@CrawlerCanyon i have asked surpass hobby direct store (if we can trust it's direct) and reply was a bit..., but generally they confirmed 550 5 slot can run 3S, then added all theirs 540 and 550 can run 3S(replied to my 3 questions). And while i have healthy distance approach, i did always think their spec tables were all showing 7,4V just for consistency and easy comparison, cause there is so many surpass motor videos running 3S on YT it'd be hard to believe they weren't capable. But then 540 plus spec table came with 2 faster motors stating different V than 2 slower variations. So you should be able to embrace inner cheapskate :-) with standard 5 slots @ ~$20
Availability in Poland is totally different story though, so 540 plus looks like promising performance & budget option in one. But it may be dud too :-/

Nice video. I too have a problem getting the camera out when doing mods. I prefer to just get to work and then discuss afterwards. New subscriber here. Thanks.

Carisma parts in stock in the UK. Could probably send you the steering kit?

    • @CrawlerCanyon

I'm looking for the steering kit, Carisma part #16267. If you can get ahold of one, and the price isn't too absurd, I'd be very interested. You can send me a message with any info through the contact form on my website (doctorisotope.com) as CZcams doesn't seem to think that we need a PM/DM function. 😑
