We’ve decided to turn our back yard into our “urban farmstead”, so I appreciate this taste testing & facts about the different varieties. It’s very helpful to get names of various tomatoes to try. Is there a way to encourage ripening? I’ve got tons of beautiful tomatoes, but they’ve been green since July AND August! The heavy smoke blocking out the sun for over a month delayed things. I of course regularly prune off foliage around the fruit so the sun can get to them. So that’s not the issue! Starting to worry I’ll be stuck w/only green tomatoes come October! If you have any tips/tricks to help along ripening I’d be so grateful! Thanks again for sharing your wisdom. It’s this depth of knowledge that makes me feel we can have an urban backyard farm & be successful feeding ourselves. You encourage me & many others to do this!
Oh, wow, I just don't know if there is a substitute for sun. It seems like it's the only thing that activates ripening. I would have to do some research on that. I do hope the air clears for a good solid two weeks so you can get your harvest. Otherwise, you will have to preserve some of those green ones at the very least. Did you get my question about how far you are from Livermore? I'll be there on Saturday.

I am amazed at how many pests and diseases that you have to deal with! With all the varieties and strains of plants that you plant! Here in the South I plant many varieties of vegetables and many other gardener friends that I know do also and we never ever have any of the problems that you are experiencing. Once in a while a little blossom end rot, or blight, I Don’t know if we are just lucky or there is something else ( climate, zone , etc..) that explains the difference in disease and pests? Any way your videos are the ABSOLUTE BEST! Absolutely love them, your voice and the way you teach/ explain the hardships/ joys of gardening are THE BEST! IT APPARENTLY PAYS TO BE A LATE BLOOMER!!!!😬

Yes, it's pretty crazy, and if they had all produced, I would have tomatoes coming out of my ears, as it is, I only have more mildew spores than I know what to do with. Please share, Jean. I just have to get sustainable. I'm working way too hard for so little subscribers. Thank you!!
I really love okra I don't think I've seen you grow that. I made some from frozen whole okra boiled with water sweet cream butter garlic powder and Greek seasoning it was so good. I use to hate boiled okra until I cooked it that way Wow was it 👍 good
i have been watching you and so long, you encourage me to start. Only i don´t know how to start, i am to scared to fail. i have tried with a fresh tomato i bought from the store removed the seeds but after 2 weeks when i didn´t see any growth i gave up and enjoy the farming of others on you tube.

What a lovely array of tomato varieties. I only grew 5 varieties this year. We had both a rainy spring and summer. Despite that, no mildew. What is a greater challenge here is blight. We cover our ground around tomatoes with straw so the spores don't splash up on the leaves as readily. We also trim off leaves to about a 12 inch height. This simply delays it and last year I was able to harvest tomatoes through October. No such luck this year. All my vines are done for except several volunteer cherry tomatoes.

Afternoon Kaye, now I know you probably thought I did not watch your video that you stayed up so late to get out. But, that was not case, I just had to get up very early. In fact I was drinking my coffee when you sent it out, I took the time to watch it before I left out for an appointment up in North Alabama, but could not comment at that time. So today as I am in waiting for the heat to subside, I thought I would watch it again and send you my comment to show my appreciation for all your effort. I am still amazed at all the varieties and the amount of plants you can put in such a small place. There you had 42 plants, here I have 7. But I am still clearing off this old Home Place and can only plant as spaces of ground that are cleared. I only put in 4 varieties, Patio, Goliath, Celebrity and Cherokee Purple. All but the Patio are looking so green and vibrant here and it the first week of September.For one person 7 plants will provide me with more than enough to eat and freeze before frost finally comes to Deep South Bama at the end of November. I will be putting out my transplants of 4 Beef Steak tomatoes for fall. I will grow these throughout the winter as well. Now, you inspired me to also start my You Tube channel, Deep South Bama with Mr. Tom. I also wanted to document what I did here and how I did it. My kids are not much into gardening and growing their food now, but maybe in their future they will need to and I wanted to leave them something on how Daddy did it when he was around. Also my Grandson loves to watch Grandpa ! I do it with what I have and not what I can buy. I live a frugal life and hope to share that with them. Along the way I will share stories of my past, memories and stories once forgotten. Now my videos are not nothing in comparison to yours, but I am learning and in time I do hope to improve on them. I just added some music to my latest video, because yours always have such a good relaxing feel . I listened and watched mine and today watched yours again. Well, yours is so much better musical score. I may be able to grow a veggie in gravel, but you can sure grow more in less space and make a video that inspires one as well as makes them feel at home. Tomatoes are my favorite. Every year I hope for a great tomato harvest. That did not happen this year. Despite attempts to keep away Blight, it was awful this year which I'm sure is at least partly due to so much rain in the spring and through July. Caterpillars were the worst I have ever seen in my garden and not the pretty butterfly ones. Your tomato harvest looks gorgeous and so well deserved as you work so hard on it. No, if that's happened, it was by accident. I am saving seeds from that vine that produced the first tomato, even though I don't know what it is. Your should try the purple bumble bee next year, great texture meatiness, very juicy and great flavor for a cherry tomato, there are also the artisan tomato which baker creek sells them or botanical interest which also sells blends of artisan tomatoes such as tiger stripes blend really recommend them
I have found that even conventional gardeners who plant only in rows, etc. don’t understand a food forest. Takes time and patience. I get you, as I am a backyard gardener. We all have a slightly different approach. We love it, so we stick to it. Always some good surprises!

Tomatoes are my favourite crop, so that makes this video my favourite video of the year. We have lots of mildew too here in Bahrain. The air humidity is really high, about 60-80% range in growing season. I never grow in pots, since it's those plants that are the most susceptible to diseases, even with the best care given. I don't know your garden layout or your climate, but it's generally the lack of airflow that encourages mildew. Wood chips/sawdust help in regulating air moisture above the soil, since they have a smaller limit for water saturation and drains well, yet maintains good moisture levels. I don't know if this comment will make it to you, posting on an old video and all, but I hope it does. Also, I'm no expert, this is just my small experience. @@Latebloomershow you should try copper fungicide. I believe it's legally organic, in any case it's just a copper salt, nothing toxic or unnatural. It 100% stops all bacterial and fungal disease in its tracks. I don't grow a single tomato that I don't use copper fungicide on. I use it well before disease sets in and I have super healthy green tomato plants all season.
Micchorhizal fungus is for roots. Someone selling it to you for your leaves is probably just engaging in marketing. Spray your tomato leaves with sulfer to stop powdery mildew.
Is the blueberry cherry a wild boars farm? I hope so because I have some coming up in the green house. That kellogs yellow one looks like a ripe persimmon! I'm so craving fresh home grown tomatoes that I'm jealous watching this. And of course, the mystery ones are delicious lol
YEP! I wish the Kellogg's tasted as good as it looked. It was pretty good. I'm craving them so bad, I'm ready to pull out my frozen cherry tomatoes and do something with them. This year will be a lean tomato year as I did not seed for the first time in 6 years. Last year I got lucky and had 40 volunteers, this year I've got none. Only about four plants so far. We shall see if I manage to pick up a few plants this month.
Great video. The only thing is when you sped up the eating and arm waiving it made you look like something from a scary movie that moves at you faster than it should. Lol
my favorite for production is the sweet million, and for taste the lemon boy. i can't get enough of the lemon boys. also, for my meaty tomatoes, i find they get kinda pasty/mushy when they are in excessive heat for a long period of time
Yes, if you watch the Judy Fannin video, she was saying you have to pick them before they are ripe. I think if you let them go a day too long, they get pasty, which I think happened to some of these tomatoes. Because I spend most of the week editing and was saving these tomatoes for the video, haha, and waited too long.
well it should go south of us. my uncle is in virginia beach and has a mandatory evacuation but isn't leaving. anyways, we have out hurricane kit ready always just in case so hopefully it won't be to bad. if you go on you tube and look up ellicott city flood of 2016 and the one in 2018, you will see what my town went through. we are extremely worried about that and praying it won't happen again

I've really appreciated having the Monarchs in my life:-) My garden club President is putting me in touch with her dtr so that I can help them to develop an appreciation of the Monarch. I planted oats today. My oil seed radish came up so nicely. I did not anticipate the heatwave we had before the drought. Two have bolted, but what pretty lavender flowers and they did their job by aerating the soil. In the spring they will be gone from winterkill, not a trace of them, just improved soil! Oats also winterkill.
Haha, I know, right? Some people enjoy seeing me eat on camera and others, like my sound editor, cringes. I do wish I had a juicy tomato to eat right now, though. It will be slim pickins' here this summer as I did not seed nor have that enormous group of volunteers come up in the compost. Same here. Out of 20 remaining plants, there's one unripe tomato out there and it's had something chewing on it.

@@Latebloomershow you should try copper fungicide. I believe it's legally organic, in any case it's just a copper salt, nothing toxic or unnatural. It 100% stops all bacterial and fungal disease in its tracks. I don't grow a single tomato that I don't use copper fungicide on. I use it well before disease sets in and I have super healthy green tomato plants all season.
Micchorhizal fungus is for roots. Someone selling it to you for your leaves is probably just engaging in marketing. Spray your tomato leaves with sulfer to stop powdery mildew.
Is the blueberry cherry a wild boars farm? I hope so because I have some coming up in the green house. That kellogs yellow one looks like a ripe persimmon! I'm so craving fresh home grown tomatoes that I'm jealous watching this. And of course, the mystery ones are delicious lol
YEP! I wish the Kellogg's tasted as good as it looked. It was pretty good. I'm craving them so bad, I'm ready to pull out my frozen cherry tomatoes and do something with them. This year will be a lean tomato year as I did not seed for the first time in 6 years. Last year I got lucky and had 40 volunteers, this year I've got none. Only about four plants so far. We shall see if I manage to pick up a few plants this month.

They sound wonderful! And of all those I've only tried Black Krim, but the plants were consumed with mildew and didn't produce much.

my favorite for production is the sweet million, and for taste the lemon boy. i can't get enough of the lemon boys. also, for my meaty tomatoes, i find they get kinda pasty/mushy when they are in excessive heat for a long period of time
Yes, if you watch the Judy Fannin video, she was saying you have to pick them before they are ripe. I think if you let them go a day too long, they get pasty, which I think happened to some of these tomatoes. Because I spend most of the week editing and was saving these tomatoes for the video, haha, and waited too long.
Jack, what's the latest on the hurricane where you are??
well it should go south of us. my uncle is in virginia beach and has a mandatory evacuation but isn't leaving. anyways, we have out hurricane kit ready always just in case so hopefully it won't be to bad. if you go on you tube and look up ellicott city flood of 2016 and the one in 2018, you will see what my town went through. we are extremely worried about that and praying it won't happen again

we did ok, uncle did ok, all because it took a more southern track. thanks for asking. we have had some pretty intense storms the past 2 days though.

Yeah, Zachary is not a tomato fan, unfortunately, and tomatoes are done unless I get a late summer surprise. But, I can have Erick eat a pineapple guava maybe and compare to a Mexican pink guava...

I've really appreciated having the Monarchs in my life:-) My garden club President is putting me in touch with her dtr so that I can help them to develop an appreciation of the Monarch. I planted oats today. My oil seed radish came up so nicely. I did not anticipate the heatwave we had before the drought. Two have bolted, but what pretty lavender flowers and they did their job by aerating the soil. In the spring they will be gone from winterkill, not a trace of them, just improved soil! Oats also winterkill.

Haha, I know, right? Some people enjoy seeing me eat on camera and others, like my sound editor, cringes. I do wish I had a juicy tomato to eat right now, though. It will be slim pickins' here this summer as I did not seed nor have that enormous group of volunteers come up in the compost.
