In this segment of Rick Steves’ European Easter, we'll experience one of Europe's most bombastic Holy Week celebrations: the processions of Sevilla's Semana Santa. Beginning on Palm Sunday, neighborhood congregations around Sevilla adorn their floats with flowers and candles, as costaleros prepare to carry those floats through the streets on their backs, amid a parade of cloaked penitents.

i went to seville last easter for semana santa and really enjoyed it, seville is a beautiful city the people are so nice and all the parades were just amazing. I am not perticularly religious but was moved by the processions and the effect they had on everyone there.

El vídeo me ha parecido muy bueno corrigiendo algunos detalles de información .Los costaleros que ahora ya llevan los ""Pasos"" y no carrozas en casi todas partes antes solo salían en Sevilla incluso en muchos sitios iban con ruedas cosa que por suerte ya no existe El comienzo de la salida de las imágenes y como consecuencia el comienzo de la Semana santa es mucho más antiguo de tu información ya que en el 1521 ya salía en Sevilla el Cristo de la Vera Cruz . Y sobre finales del 1300 ya la Hermandad del Silencio estaba constituida .Para Sevilla es un orgullo tener esa historia y poderla disfrutar hasta nuestros días definiendo así una cultura que se ha ido extendiendo por toda España .Gracias por tu vídeo .......y los pestiños no son picantes son dulces de miel .Un saludo.

As a Sevillian I have to correct something you said. Costaleros aren´t only men. There are also "pasos" carried by women (costaleras) and other "pasos" where mixed women and men carry them, it´s demonstrated that women can do that job as well as men. In other parts of Spain and throughout Andalusia there are costaleras except in Seville, here are still many misogynists. Córdoba and Granada have many pasos carried by women and they are incredible and beautiful
