    This really sounds like it'd be right up my alley. Japanese authors have a very interesting writing style. Great review Larry!

    I love Sayaka Murata. She is my kinda author. I think I prefered Convenience Store Woman, but this one was great too. It feels like one I might enjoy even more upon reread. The theme of collectivism/alienation in Japanese Lit, is lit 🔥

      Has she written anything else (that has been translated)?

    I'm not surprised it's a weird book. _Convenience Store Woman_ was also weird, but I liked it. Now knowing it isn't sci-fi I might actually pick it up at some point.

    Great hearing your thoughts on this. Yep, *very dark* and a strong stomach needed! I was engrossed by it (or maybe just grossed out by it) and definitely agree it's getting readers to think about all the larger issues you mention but I think in retrospect it felt to me like it was going more for shock value than trying to say something meaningful.

      I can see how it's getting really close to that line, thanks for watching Eric :-)

    Ahh, I keep meaning to read this and Convenience Store Woman! I like what you said about the group vs individual identities- I’d be fascinated to see how that works in the book itself.
    Great video as always!

    But the cover looks so sweet. Wow… such a different book than I would have expected! Great discussion!

    Oh yes. I was looking at either reading this or “Heaven” by Kawakami soon on my upcoming vacation

    This has been on my tbr for a while - think I'm either gonna love this or hate this lol..
    In your opinion should I read this first or convenience store woman? If CSW is more 'conventional' thinking I should start with that one

    • @LarryHasOpinions
      @LarryHasOpinions  Před 2 lety

      Difficult to say, this is definitely more memorable, if you definitely plan on reading both then yes probably start with csw
