    New World Record for Fastest Vehicles across Antarctica to The South Pole
    eon.businesswire.com/news/eon/...
    Two Arctic Trucks AT44 Expedition vehicles have set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest overland journey to the South Pole, crossing 2308km of the Antarctica High Plateau from Novo to the South Pole in 4.5 days.
    Arctic Trucks International (www.arctictrucks.com) announced today that a new world record of the fastest overland journey to the South Pole has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
    In December 2010 two Arctic Trucks vehicles crossed 2308km of the Antarctica High Plateau from Novolazarevskaya station (Novo) to the South Pole in 108 hours (4.5 days). The purpose-built AT Expedition vehicles, based around a Toyota Hilux platform, traveled at an average speed to South Pole of 21.4km/h and average fuel efficiency of 2.2km/per liter, with only a single refueling stop on the way. An unofficial improvement on the record itself was achieved for the return journey, which was faster still at only 3.5 days, averaging 27.5km/h. No comparable speed or fuel efficiency has ever been recorded for high plateau expeditions in Antarctica. Arctic Trucks built vehicles have now clocked over eighty thousand kilometers on the plateau, proving new benchmarks for speed, range, reliability and fuel efficiency for overland travel in this area.
    The two Arctic Trucks vehicles used for this round trip were both Arctic Trucks Expedition AT44 models. Arctic Trucks designs and builds these vehicles based around the Toyota Hilux 3.0 liter turbo diesel.

    And I thought we were the coolest crew. We camp out for weeks in the dessert. Take out my sand rail, quads and toyhauler trailer pulled by my big diesel f350. In summer we camp out in different places here in the US for weeks. We 4x4 across different terrains but you guys my friends are super cool its below zero and still camping. That is awesome. I take my hat off for you guys. The ladys remind me of my wife we been in the middle of no mans land turning wrenches at 1 AM. fun times.

These are the tires I grew up looking at in the late 80s. But I see them in Iceland on these Euro 4x4s. But they’re not in the USA no more? Anyone know how to purchase a set of four 44 inch DCs like these guys have?

  • @Sodiumreactor
    @Sodiumreactor Před 9 lety

    @Dwight Stewart They are using Jet Fuel for some reason. It has a freezing point comparable to gasoline, around -50F. Not sure why they did not just run it on gas. I am sure they have a block heater and the oil pan is insulated and kept warm. "Radiator fluid" AKA Anti-Freeze can be mixed to go below -60F. It took alot of work to get these trucks capable of roaming across Antartica.

    • @Sodiumreactor
      @Sodiumreactor Před 9 lety

      Tharn Berry I did not word it as specific as I should have. I was not implying that they run gasoline in a diesel engine. I was wondering why they did not just use a gas engine in the first place.

    • @danielalien
      @danielalien Před 9 lety

      Sodiumreactor Jet A1 is kerosene, not gasoline and is much more comparable to diesel than gasoline is. Also, the 3 liter commonrail Toyota diesel engines are much better suited to the hard labour these trucks were built for and Jet A1 is also more available.. Add to it that diesel engines can be run on just about anything, are less prone to screw up during water fording, etc etc etc.

    At those temperatures, how do you keep fuel, engine oil, radiator fluid, and similar from freezing? It’s just too cold for me. My idea of an “expedition” is a summer trip to the beach towing a boat or a campground towing a travel trailer.

      That's not new. Commercial truckers have been using flaps (vinyl, canvas, etc) in front of radiators for decades (in addition to the trucks I've driven, I've even occasionally used aluminum foil on car radiators), but even they'll tell that has limits.

    • @somemedic

      Hilux aren't really aussie rides. ISIS loves the shit out of em.
      These are built on Taco frames. I believe when this expedition show first came out was around 99 and the Tundra hadn't been a true proven platform yet. I'm sure the crew on the expedition would have killed for the extra room of a 1st gen tundra.
      Fun fact when Toyota was kicking around the idea of naming their line up of trucks T100 for tacos and t150s for tundras, ford went apeshit and immediately rallied their legal team to put a cease and desist order on that. So... toyota had to come up with another name for their new larger (mildly) big truck and their small 4x4. Tacoma won out for the small truck. This show was a huge success at the time. Makes you wonder how they came up with the name for the big truck....

      I mean you can modify a prius to be extremely durable and rugged. These trucks are so modified from the ground up, I wouldn't even consider them a toyota anymore. It's like if you had a monster truck and you put a chevy exterior chasis on it, or how in nascar they'll put a chevy logo on the front of their cars, it doesn't automatically make it a chevy. Once you start modifying everything, you can't really brag about how tough the brand name is. Nothing against toyota, If it was a chevy or ford or whatever I would have said the same exact thing

    • @tva8252
      @tva8252 Před 9 lety +1

      ArcticAstrophysics it is toyota frame and engine. Engine may be slightly tune to run in colder weather and have a fuel heater/block heater but that is probably it. Frame is stock with suspension modified to handle 35 and up because no stock suspension can handle that. Most likely rear and front lockers which I have installed on my rig.
      Their website is on the side of one of the truck give them a email and ask. The hilux 38 was alway on top gear.
