“Why” is a curiosity question, but often comes across as a shaming question. Instead of “why,” I prefer “tell me more about that” or “what about ____ made you feel____,” or “how did you come to that decision,” or “what was your process like to arrive at that conclusion…” Basically changing out “why” with “what” or “how” can create a safer environment and lead to a Deeper connection and story.
This is amazing and seems like it would be better received. Thank you for that.
1. Tell me about a time when...
2. Mirror your guest by repeating the last few words of his or her statement.
3. How or what were you feeling in this moment / when this happened?
4. What happened next?
5. Why
Remember: be genuinely curious and listen actively.
Great questions and very helpful content. Thanks Pat!

Thank you very much 🤝🙏🏻
Thank you. 🙏🏽
Wow! This is exactly the same steps we use in our coaching sessions and I've never thought about it could be implemented in interviews ! Great to know I'll be starting to use them! Thank you Pat 🙏🙏
Thank you for these tips! I love all of the questions and especially the variety on asking how they felt (feeling/emotional), what went through their mind (thinking/logical), and what they felt in their gut (feeling/physical). Hits the different thinking styles!
Great video Pat! What I like about these kinds of questions is that they delve a little deeper and can lead to deeper conversations, something that I think society really needs. I’m getting ready to start my own podcast so I’m thankful for the information!
HOW TIMELY that this video popped up on YT. I am conducting my first podcast interview in 3 days. Pat, your suggestions will take what I have written to ask the interviewee to the next level. Thank you🤩
I love all the suggestions you make, Pat, especially the mirroring technique and creating emotion in an interview
This is excellent. And as you mentioned, these are techniques that can be used in a "regular" conversation as well. It will make you a better listener and make people have much more meaningful conversations with you.
Thanks, Pat! I write interview blogs: that include video, text, and audio. Love your questions--simple, adventurous, and straight to the point!
Thank you for this great value! I am going to start implementing all these into my podcast but the one I find that will be most powerful is, "Tell me about a time when..." This is going to help me get to that next level of value! Thank you again for your content.
Glad to know I’m on the right path with my question asking on my VERY niche podcast. Thank you Pat, after many years, your vids continue to inspire me.
Starting to interview local business owners along with promotion videos, this content is super helpful when starting out!!!
I love these questions because it "humanizes" the entire experience.
The " tell me about a time when" blew me away! So appreciate this! TFS!
Thank you Pat for all of your amazing videos, I’m two weeks in here podcasting in Spain and loving it.
Loved this. I've done a lot of interviewing for writing jobs in my career but these questions are particularly great for a podcast conversation. I especially loved the "mirroring" tip. I started doing this with you on the podcast, and I saw how easy it was. So cool! I'm going to try it with my family and friends - get some practice in before launching my podcast. :-) Thank you!
Brilliant as always .These questions are so useful in a number of topics and instances. ...I’ve even seen some of them used to create rapport in job interviews.
Pat, thank you so much for these tips. You are a master at your craft, and you were very generous to teach others to be as well. Thank you
So timely. I haven't used these but I will have guests on my upcoming CZcams lives. I will be pulling these into rotation. Thanks Pat.
The ASK PAT of CZcams I'm glad someone asked this question and I'm so grateful you answered!
This is an excellent video. I appreciate to it straightforwardness and not giving silly examples! It was super helpful!
Thanks, Pat! Framing questions for your guest is indeed very important to keep the conversation interesting.
Talking about emotions, it’s so true, I asked a Dad on my show the other day how he was feeling (as you know first time dads are often sleep deprived, he gave such a genuine answer that I think resinate will all fathers out there, he said he’s dying to get some sleep but instead of crying he burst out laughing 😅😂😂 Thank you Pat for all of the inspiration 🎉
Love #1. Everybody has a story. Help them to pass it along. Mirroring an interesting strategy as well. Will try that tonight at dinner!!
Love this! "How where you feeling when...???
"Tell me about a time when..."
Mirroring! All so valuable thanks Pat!
Great stuff Pat😎
I'll apply all of them next Wednesday when I'll have a friend of mine on the show who just quit his job after hustling for a few years ...
... and next week he'll become his own boss!🍺🍺🍺
Thanks Pat for these awesome ideas. I belive the hardest one for me will be the "mirroring". We'll see how it goes.💪
I am only at my third CZcams episode as an Interviewer and I needed this so much. Thank you for sharing.
Really helpful suggestions - thank you! I will try applying them all in my upcoming interview.
Great insights, really helps with gaining perspective on interviews. Thanks for sharing!!
I’m definitely trying all of these thank you!

-Tuan
I love "tell me about a time _____?" I can't wait to implement this into my interviews. I will definitely be using my family to practice!!!
How did it go? Did it work as well as you hoped?
You keep delivering! Thanks for the help.
That 5th question is GOLD. I am so using this.
Love your videos. You are very helpful. I appreciate you. I am now subscribed!
These are great Pat ^^ thanks, I will certainly use it from today ^^
Starting my podcast. This video definitely gave me a lot of guidance 🙏
I’m finally diving into to Pat’s book SUPERFAN’S today. It’s been great. Popped over the watch this video, commented and then he responded to me...which is what Pat preaches in the book’s chapter “Return Every Handshake”. I’m always thankful for Pat’s kindness, and was very impressed that Pat continues to practice what he preaches. Thanks again Pat. You inspire us all.
Thanks Chris! I appreciate you!
Hey Pat great Tips, A few i have tried already but i definitely learned a few more from this video.
Btw "Never Split The Difference" is an awesome book. One hilarious tip I remember is coming to a job interview with an extremely precise number for your expected salary, not 100 000$ a year, go for 97 879$ for example, to show you've done your research and this was a calculated number. I don't know why but I found this tip hilarious and at the same time I see how this can be useful to keep in mind. Be precise, and ask for what you want.
Great video Pat, I got the point about EMOTION! It will make the podcast really GREAT. Thank you!
Thank you Pat🎉 so helpful .
Really great tips Pat, thank you for sharing!
Thank you. I really enjoyed listemimg to the video.
Im going to try out mirroring! I have read Never split the difference and IDK WHY I never thought of applying his strategies!!! Thank you #TEAMFLYNNFORTHEWIN :)
Golden advice. To elicit stories I like to ask, tell me the story how...
Also to get more flavor out of a story, I like to ask "But what made you think you could..."
And finally, to add more depth to a story, I like to ask, "But what did X think or say..."
Great questions to ask. On my channel, I talk to people in the software industry and I know the feeling of trying to listen, but also prepare to ask the next question. Having these 5 questions in my tool belt should help bring out the best in my guest. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Awesome content. Thank you Pat!
Thank you! Very informative!
Always high value, thank you sir
Intelligent questions all. Thank you for sharing them
Pat, my favorite communicator on the planet is Andy Stanley. However, as I listen and watch your videos I'm beginning to shift Andy to second place, just behind you. Well done.

1) Why
2) if you like the story that's being told and you want to learn more in addition to asking questions like why if that makes sense ask this what happened next
3) how are you really feeling in this moment what were you feeling when this was happening what was going through your mind
4) repeat the same few last words that a person just said when they finish their thought and by doing that and actually creating an intonation
5) tell me about a time when
I will use all! Thanks!!
This is the best and easy strategy for me as a bigger. I just recorded my very two episodes.
It’s great learning ❤
You need to be more famous. Amazing tips! Thank you
Thank you!

Love it. I always ask "why", but will definitely incorporate the other four now. Thanks Pat!
For a second I thought you meant the other 4 "whys": Why? Why? Why? Why? 😂
@@patflynn Bwawawawawa!!! I can see "why" you would think that.
