    Thank mate for making this video.
    Of course I watched after changing window hinges. I realised I forgot to put the spacers in. So tomorrows job is to take the window out again and redo with the spacers.
    That was ground floor window. Feeling better about doing the upstairs ones after watching your video.

    Thank you for the video. I am going to have ago off the back of this.
    The vid was not clear one point tho, fitting the hinge to the double glazed unit what is the actual position of the plate to the bottom/top corner, there is overhang ‘claw’ so I’m not sure how much this overhangs or if there is a indication mark on the plate You referred to that you used the existing fixing points on yours. Apologies I don’t know the correct terminology for the parts……electricians for you 😁. Please advise the plate positions

    Good video, well done. One of my windows seems to have a bit of gap between the glass window frame and the frame on the inside of the house. So i can hear the wind a little. I tried changing the window seals but it's still there. So maybe it's this i need to do. Do you know any other reason for the gap i have? The gap is at the lower inside corner and basically the window isn't butting up good against the frame when closed. Thanks a lot

    • @TheRepairer
      @TheRepairer  Před rokem

      Yes I had the same problem it was on the side opposite the catch that’s why I replaced the window hinges and thought I would upgrade them to easy clean at the same time. The problem has now gone after replacing the hinges. Lubricating the window hinges should also help close up the gap but I found that correct sealing to be an exercise in pot luck every time I closed the window hence the new hinge replacement which eliminated the problem!

    Hi there. My window in my house is not closing correctly ,it's a side hung window now on the lock side it's fine but on the opposite end it has about 4mm gap now I have recently changed the hinges as the gap was alot worse before this . Now my question is have I done something wrong when put the new hinges on or is there an adjustment screw I need to alter to bring that side in. Thanks you hopefully you can get back to me as soon as you can .

    • @TheRepairer
      @TheRepairer  Před 2 lety

      It may be possible to slide the window in relation to the frame by 4mm by slackening the window hinge screws as there are two oval screw holes on the hinge for adjusting and one round hole for securing the hinge in the desired place.

  • @pauldeakin3413
    @pauldeakin3413 Před 3 lety +1

    Video is very good and you make that job look easy but I don't think I'd dare attempt that.
    Some of my windows have got a gap down the hinge side and it varies each time I close the windows.
    Sometimes the gaps ok and other times its about 6 or 8 mm too wide at the top or bottom or sometimes all the way down.
    When it happens, there's a big draught blowing in. Freezing this week at night.
    Could this be that the hinges just need cleaning and oiling?

    • @TheRepairer
      @TheRepairer  Před 3 lety +1

      It’s likely that the hinges need replacement, do try lubricant first as it easy to try and will likely improve them to some degree. This is the reason I upgraded the windows to easy clean hinges as I was forced to replace them anyway and thought I’d try to upgrade them in the process.If your window gaskets are less than supple they aren’t to difficult to replace just fiddly.

      @@TheRepairer Thanks for the reply. I’ll try that first in the morning. If I have to do the new hinges I’ll try to take the glass out. I wouldn’t dare try it with the glass in. I’d probably drop the lot and finish up with the biggest gap ever, no window at all lol.

    My window hinges were using rivets, how do i change it to screws? with the prebuilt holes from the rivets?

    • @TheRepairer
      @TheRepairer  Před 3 lety

      I’ve not experienced this, I suppose it could be a production cost cutting measure assuming rivets are cheaper than screws. Everything from stack height and hole spacing needs to be checked to prevent misalignment before drilling out the rivets.I think I’d tread carefully maybe drill one rivet out and find some suitable screws checking that the screw heads clear the hinge when closing the window as rivets are quite flush fit.

    Hi, My widows have a gap on the top corner above the handle. I can literally see sun light trough the gap, would that be caused by damaged hinges. Thanks great job there

    • @TheRepairer
      @TheRepairer  Před 2 lety +1

      Hinges could be worn, . It could also require adjustment or be a degenerated gasket as they shrink with age. difficult to say without seeing it.

      @@TheRepairer How would you adjust said gap, please? I've also got that gap (top on the side opposite the window handle) and can push the window in from the outside (thankfully ground-floor, despite the easy-clean!), but next time the window is opened, the gap reappears after closing it. I've tried to find a way of bringing the window deeper into the frame, but don't seem to get how to adjust it! Am now going to replace hinges in the hope that this will fix it, but even then I don't quite understand why new hinges would do a better job! The old ones aren't bent or anything - not sure where that much wear could come from, that there is a 5mm gap at the side at the top of the window. I clearly don't quite grasp the way this works yet! Anyway, nice video - thanks a lot.

      I know exactly where you are coming from I was in disbelief that my hinges were worn to that extent. I converted to easy clean so it justified the effort required. Prior to the conversation I found that if got the hinges Well lubricated, it took some of the gap up but this was hit and miss and provided a poor air seal.

    well done for screwing it back on again on your own.
    I have a little challenge as 2 windows dont seem to open at all as lock is all broken. It has a lock up and one down and in the middle I have no where to grab it from and open. I am stuck with 2 others I managed to open the others fine.

    • @TheRepairer
      @TheRepairer  Před 2 lety +1

      I take it your turning the handle for the two windows and nothing is happening. Sounds like a failed gearbox issue I had on another window. I managed to fit a small Allen key 2-3mm in the gap between the panels and override the gearbox mechanism using mole grips the grip the Allen key and some force and persistence . I bent the Allen key in the process (didn’t care) but managed to open the window and source and fit a replacement gearbox.

      If you only change one hinge but don't use the exact same brand and size hinge currently in then you may have issues with the opening of it as the different brands open slightly different and different angles so will have a crooked window when opening, they come as a pair for this reason so you replace together so they wear at the same time and there the same. 👍

    I just wanted to say for anyone that may be looking this up…
    This is actually a downgrade not an upgrade..
    The hinges you had on were Fire Escape window hinges, it allows for the window to open fully so you can escape through it.
    The ones fitted allow you to clean them but you may struggle to escape if the worse happens.
    Consider if you’d be able to clean the windows with a ladder and pole instead..

    • @TheRepairer
