Amey were given a 10-year contract to maintain the roads in the City of Plymouth. They did anything but and, not surprisingly, had the contract terminated and were replaced by South West Highways (SWH) who are part of Devon County Council. So far, SWH are doing the job they are being paid to do and Plymouth's roads are being maintained. SWH also has a civil engineering arm, named SWH Civils, which built the new Plymouth Coach Station. Okay, the canopy resembles two pizza slices and have been affectionately nicknamed The Flying Pizza Slices, but the job was carried out within contract and the quality of workmanship is very good indeed. Just goes to show that private is not always best and that when the public sector is allowed to compete on a level playing field with the private sector, they can win contracts and do a good job of it. SCC need to answer some serious questions about what is going on in Sheffield and the people of Sheffield need to hold those who purport to represent them to account whether the elected representatives like it or not. And as for the council officers who feel they can defame, intimidate, vilify and threaten Sheffield residents who object to public funds being used to enrich a corporation, they are not beyond the reach of the law, although they may feel they are, and justice will catch up with them.
