I missed the part where you tried doing the same to an aluminum bedside
Where is the aluminum?
look back at my video about 2 weeks ago
Some day soon we will be talking about how great aluminum is versus plastic.....
Steven Ruble I think aluminum and plastics are actually good for somethings, and they can be good materials for some parts of cars and trucks, but for truck beds, it's not the greatest idea.
emdec55 I disagree, most people that are serious about using their trucks will use heavy duty liners affixed the the bed. Once you put a tough liner on, it doesn’t matter anymore if it’s steel or aluminum. Infact when I got my pickup truck for my farm, first thing I had done, got the bed lined because doesn’t matter if the bed is steel or aluminum, I’m going to be throwing shit in the rear that would puncture both materials over time (like logging chains and shit) and driving my ATV and dirt bikes up on the back... to haul them to other locations to ride and explore. I’m really not brand loyal with pickup trucks. Infact I rather not own one, but I have to. I got a Ford 2015 F150 model with 8 foot bed it was apparently a special order that got canceled, something to to do with contracts (that’s what I was told) so I got a great deal on it. I couldn’t refuse it costed less than my Polaris Razorback UTV.
As for what metal is better, that depends how its constructed into the vehicle and how good it’s been engineered. Not about brand or raw material. It’s about how it’s put together. Infact having seen first hand some crashes with newer vehicles that made of plastics and aluminum and survival rate even with closing speeds nearing 100+ MPH head on I rather that! Sure it bends and deforms and explodes into 1000 prices but that’s that’s why survival rate is so high. The energy is leaving the vehicle not going into it, where you are.
Lol already using plastic in Ford Chevy and ram bearings
Ford made the beds for the step side F150's and Explorer Sport Trac out of SCM. Sheet Composite Materialm basically plastic.
If you're not abusive, steel, aluminum or plastic are all fine for constructing body panels or beds.
Saturn did it with their cars.
However, work trucks end up inadvertently in positions of abuse due to the nature of the industry's their operated in.
meehhhe Of You A bedliner being made of plastic is one thing, making the bed, the cab, etc. is something else. You can easily and cheaply replace a bedliner, but it's a lot more difficult and costly to repair or replace part of the body, which is why you want it to be as strong as possible and as economical as possible.
As for crash safety, there's no proof one material is better than another.
I'm gonna have to go out and test that on my '16 2500HD... Kidding. Another great video sir. Thank you
Super cool walk thru. Thanks.
If you want to see pretty good recovery videos check out Ron Pratt's channel. They have a Century 1150R Rolling Rotator From Miller Industries rated at 50 ton.
Cool stuff! That would be cool to see that project wrecker truck when he has it all done up!
Looks like steel is stronger.
Thanks for sharing this.
What a cool video👍🏼 definitely more like this
Awesome content you're giving out I just discovered you today and watch like 10 of your videos and then realised you live in the same city I do or close by. The one video that caught my eye was how to modify a jeep, looking to buying in the future would do any new jeep reviews?
ChaosChisei: thank you
Thanks I enjoyed this. I read a comment on Rv manufacturing and wondering if an rv plant tour would be something you would do?
that is something I'm planning
I have learned so much from your channel. Yes, I'm subscribed, keep up the great work!
Just a general question /statement , we see consumer reports testing and rating vehicles , sure wish they would do the same with rv's and travel trailers !
Would he impossible. Vehicles are made with an entirely different manufacturing and assembly process where the built can be managed to a sub-millimeter level of accuracy using robots. RVs (trailer type more so than motorhomes) are almost 100% made and assembled by hand. Though with skilled labor, you still have a HUGE margin of error when nailing, gluing, adhering, and stapling. Just no way to guarantee the one you get would be anywhere near the quality as the one that rolls of the assembly line after it. Makes testing almost impossible.
I had to sift through the cab of a truck involved in an accident for reconstruction of the fatal accident. The truck hit a bridge abutment, a steel pipe ripped through the fuel tank and made contact with the battery cables causing the fire. No, it was not fun and it looked similar to that cab in this video.
That must have been some hot fire! I hope the driver got out safely .
Still think you should look at the international MXT or AVS motors humvee.
7 minutes and 14 seconds that I'll never get back.
Good video the burnt tractor you were wondering how they moved it. The way we would do it is hook the cables on to the tractor. From the wrecker liftup the tractor then you back up under the tractor with a trailer. Lower the tractor on to the trailer and drive the trailer away.
Do a review on his T600 rotator.
Absolute world class channel , I love your content , I'm an avid follower ,I will spread the word of this great channel!
Val looks to be a great guy!
How much price for the silverado ?
@3:38 international for sale small fire damage. Lots of Putina. Small amount of work to be done. 30 000 obo no low ballers.
What gauge steel & aluminum bodies were they?
All these rust free trucks, here in Michigan most used trucks have rust on them. I seen 3 year old trucks with rust holes. I'm so jealous. They drop salt on the roads here like it's going out of style. I guess when you get 100+ inches of snow that happens.
I own 2004 Sierra, a deer hit the left side of the bed and put dints down the side. Steel or aluminum does not matter the complete bed side was replaced as with most body panles with dints that stretch the metal. If you're vehicle burns it doesn't matter what it's made of. They both have advantages and disadvantages. Plus down the road GM and Dodge will go to aluminum also.
How much is the 2017 Silverado
Cool video
Metal can be repaired, aluminum has to be replaced in most cases. Also, is the aftermarket places, like LMC Truck, going to reproduce aluminum panels for these new trucks when they become older? I doubt it.
Daniel C I just ordered a 2018 F350...but totally against my better judgment. I own a body shop, and I think aluminum is complete shit. Unfortunately, Ford (I'm a Ford guy) is all they offer. I'm hoping the rest of what ford offers out weights the aluminum headache. Wish me luck...
I'm pretty sure Aluminum is a metal
I think what you're referring to in these videos incorrectly is strength vs toughness. Strength in terms of material properties is the max force it takes before it deforms. Toughness is the maximum force it takes before it sheers. Fords thick aluminum seems plenty strong, but not as tough as steel. Your video should be titled toughness of aluminum vs steel. Just saying because it seems you know it all on the videos you post.
Are all your videos based on the valley?
yeah...which one will rust out first?
The point of using Aluminum is that the saved weight can be used to beef up other parts the make them stronger without adding weight to the truck. Plus, no one buys a new truck and beats on it with a crowbar to see if they can damage it.
Gregg Collins of course not. But if someone were to use these trucks on say, a construction site dings and dents will happen.
Sorry but saying any truck regardless of what it is made of will get dings, and dents on a construction sight is like saying "Tomorrow the sky will be full of air."
Edingburd tx? U all from the rgv
At 4:33 what can you tell me about it,if it’s for sale I’d be interested.
Rc Awesome: Msg me if you interested in getting in touch with him
How would I do that, my sons account.
I’m Disappointed with my F250 it’s a 2017 and had a lot of problems with it my rear passenger door hinges are loose my sunroof is leaking and trim pieces were falling apart I need a duly and thinking of going with a Chevy 4500
Sometimes the trucks they make are good, sometimes they can be complete lemons. In reality, they all can have problems. My Chevy 3500 was a lemon, even hired an attorney to resolve the issue with GM.
I have owned rams since 1996 they have all been great trucks to me. But I agree man fords are shit today. They made great work trucks back in the early 2000s but I have to say I’m very disappointed in ford. My company just got a new fleet of f2/350s 3 trucks in the first couple months back to the dealer that ridiculous to me. Never since I have worked here have so many new trucks failed
My 2016 f250 was a good solid truck I got this 2017 right when they where released and been having bad luck want to get a f450 not a doge fan to rough of a ride for me Chevy I like but I don’t know their trucks are very bland next to a f250
homer1869 NEVER buy first model year. You’re almost guaranteed to have problems with any brand
Ford broke my heart when they started using aluminum. They turned it from a tough pickup-truck into a hipster car with a bed that looks like a truck :-(
you should buy that arsoned silverado for and just have it to do a bunch of tests on like see if it can tow your 5th wheel, see if the steel is thicker than fords, see how much weight you can pout in the bed and have it still drive
If I am not mistaken when tearing the aluminum only one edge was being torn here the steel is being torn on 2 edges
Have you seen the twist and flex video dodge put out against Ford? Curious how dodge body bend dent or tear compares to that steel F150.
White F-150 for sale. Low mileage. Slightly used. Coupled dings. Normal wear and tear
You can tear pieces off the bed of my steel-body F-150 because of the rust lol. I guess that’s one of the plus sides of living in Texas.
Well I’ve never really have had to peel my truck apart
I think everyone has really missed the concept of the new aluminum ford trucks. Its not a matter of strength, it's a matter of IT WON'T RUST OUT FROM UNDER YOU, THAT WAS THE POINT. Its for those of us who live where it snows, where they use salt and calcium on the roads. People are sick of paying $60,000+ for a truck, and through 6-8 winter the truck looks like its 20 years old, wheel wells, rocker panels, floor pans, fenders, floor of the bed rotted out. It don't matter how well you wash it, its gonna happen to a steel truck.
If you don't like the new ford, don't buy it. Simple as that.
John Jones II Einstein aluminum corrodes wait till your truck is 5 years to 10 years old hahaha
I must say I mentioned to you in the last video where you are hyping up the aluminum in that Ford truck that was in the accident, that steel didn't peel anywhere near as easy as the aluminum and you shunned me then I'm sure you will again!!! Steel is Superior in strength over the aluminum however aluminum quite obviously has some fantastic characteristics as well, for its weight it is quite strong however it doesn't rust but it does corrode!! I've seen transmissions and transfer cases made of aluminum completely corroded away to nothing here in New England ,as I have seen Steel completely rust away to nothing on frames of every manufacturer!!
J Patt Yeah it remember that video where he said I'm sure steel would peel as easy as this aluminum, I would run away from aluminum trucks, just coat the crap out of my steel truck and it should last a life time.
Im not shunning you. The steel was much harder to peel. When I'm wrong I'll admit it. Otherwise I wouldn't have made this video. I don't think Aluminum is a bad material (crash tests prove it), but I will agree it's easier to tear and puncture.
Big Truck Big RV I would agree aluminum isn't a bad material I think it's a fantastic material it has a lot of uses and works out well in most all of them but the fact that people make believe it fixes the problem with corrosion is completely incorrect once again I will speak for up in the Northeast because this is my world I constantly see A/C condensers completely corroded radiators that are completely corroded from the chemicals and salt up here in New England..... It does drive me a bit crazy that Ford has suddenly got all this credit for using aluminum when GM (as well as other manufacturers)has been using aluminum for many years as a matter of fact GM has used it in subframes on the Impala cars for a decade!........ I do realize that it is because of Fords ingenius marketing strategy that the aluminum hype is here they are the best at marketing for sure!!
2005llyduramax I'm not really afraid of aluminum.... it just drives me crazy all the hype with Ford! many manufacturers have been using it for years in various components on vehicles it's not new!!! I do agree with coating it once a year not sure where you're from but a product like New Hampshire oil undercoating is a fantastic option it protects everything not only the frame but all the pinch seams on the bottom of the doors in the rocker panels in the hood and tailgate of trucks it's a great product !that's not talked about enough!!
J Patt but how many a/c condensors and radiators have automotive paint with clear coat? As long as the paint is taken care of with regular washing/waxing, it should outlast steel by a long shot.
Grabs crowbar says " here, hold my beer" lol
The aluminum is great here in the northeast due to the snow and salt on the roads. No Rust!
I bet my mostly aluminum and plastic dirtbike could handle that crowbar just fine. That thing would just bend and flex and bounce right back.
Of course there's a difference between a bike and the hollow panels of a truck bed. It does make me wonder how an aluminum bed would hold up if it had some structure behind it.
Ahh there nothing like a good science experiment...and this is nothing like it. 🤣
WOW because thats what i bought my truck for was to punch holes in it
And the point of that is what? that if even a Toyota corolla broadsides the box of a pickup at 40 miles an hour the steel box will be .... fine? gee at least make it really interesting !! run at it head first now that I'd watch : )
What better ? Big trucks, or big rv. You tell me
So, my dads F-350 with the Aluminum body had what I call a happy little accident.
We were moving his 37ft trailer house and the hitch came undone when moving forward and the entire thing was resting on his tailgate. Like it was bent in a U-Shape. So upon lifting the trailer, guess what? The tailgate went right back to shape. Only popped the rivets which were replaced. I was skeptical about the aluminum at first, but after that, I’ve gained much confidence in Ford’s decision. But people will always try to crap on it even though Chevy is following suit....
Why can’t we all agree every truck nowadays is the same?
Chevy is steel except for tailgate...doors and hood..
The rest is all steel..ford is 💩💩💩
that was awsome
Who the fuck cares about strength, when you look that good.
Thanks for doing this! So now when I take a crow bar or a pair of Chanel locks to my 2017 f150 I’ll know how bad it will dent. 🤦🏼♂️
If a rusty steel truck and an aluminum truck have an accident will it make a termite fire ? ;)
So yes I will be keeping my 95 f150
AMAZING!!! Now we know that steel is harder to puncture and tear than aluminum. . . who'd have thunk it????????
gac914 Welcome to the engineering thunkers who claim to know more than we do..
crash tests are a far better judge of overall engineering and strength. How well the truck protects the occupants in various accidents. I didn't check, do you know which truck does best?
To be honest, I looked for a test that you may have done on aluminum, and didn't see one, (at least recently.) I would venture to say that this might be a fooler -- the aluminum may offer better crumple zones and energy absorption than the steel, but that's just my guess. One great thing about aluminum is no rust, although you have to be careful for galvanic corrosion of whatever fasteners they would have used!
Oh my gosh ..... Really??? no way...... Gasp.. Lol
Oh my gosh ..... Really??? no way...... Gasp.. Lol
I'd still choose aluminum, saves on gas, dont need to worry about body rust.
Rather have aluminum. Had a 95 1500 Chevy z71 cab corners was gone an the bumper was starting.
6061 T6 Alum isn't good for body skins of cars or trucks unless it has plastic (Steel together with Alum touching will corrode steel faster than salt baths) reinforement between layers of alum. Steel is far superior than Alum but way heavier, but solid 7073 grade Alum which is Aerospace (NASA) is almost as strong as steel.
Stephen Bradley: I could care less about what people believe is the best skin for a vehicle. I care about which vehicle I am more likely to walk away from uninjured in a serious crash. At the end of the day that should be all that matters.
but no rust rot on a aluminum truck
I live in the Midwest, and all my friends with 10+ year old Chevy/ GM trucks have rusted out rocker panels.
Due to the cab design on a lot of older GM trucks, you need to wash the rocker panels to prevent moisture buildup.
I live in the Midwest as well, near KC. And the funny thing is my 90' Dodge has some normal rust around the wheel wells. But it's bed is PERFECT. It was used as a farm truck. Not half bad for a near 30 year old truck
5 year old chevy rockers are rusting out
What did we learn here !
Wear is the Comparison between the two.
U only showed steel?
Says steel vs aluminum.
Actually aluminum is stronger then steel if its cooled under compression. Which I am sure adds more cost.
aluminum is brittle
The only benefit of aluminum is its rust resistant but other wise I would rather have a steel bodied pick up truck.
Graveltrucking it's also lighter too
renge99O9 true especially up north with salt all over the roads
Actually it will still corrode.
sailingjacobe ya you will get a white powder residue. But I believe it will rust a lot less than steel down the road. It used to be the drivetrain will last longer than the truck. Now it will be the body that outlast the drivetrain haha.
It's much lighter and more resistant to dents and dings
A steel sheet metal body is more durable plain and simple. The better question is can we make it thinner to loose weight but holds it's durability.
Sad to see the older f150 like that.
Watching this video hurts because I drive that generation F150
What’s the lesson here don’t swing a crowbar at your alumi truck??
No Aluminum Trucks for this cowboy. As long as I have a choice.
First off, who would actually take a steel rod and try to put a hole in their truck? There's a better chance that you'll have a rust hole in the steel, than one from a screwdriver. Second, the new aluminum body F:150 will never rust, with the exception of the frame. Conclusion: the new aluminum F:150 is lighter thus increasing fuel economy and guarunteeing a rust free body. So what's not to like?
They did a crash test in 2014 with the steel F150 and the Aluminum F150..
The Aluminum truck disintegrated!! They had views from top, side, front etc as it was an official test..
The only reason they say the Aluminum F150 now 250 etc is strong is because they know where the test crash hits and they reinforced that part of the trucks structure with steel..
This isn't b.s,this was a test you can search on youtube it is still up,but I haven't looked for awhile, easy to find..
I actually like the F250 but the aluminum scares me..Ever notice Semi Trucks and Fords melt to nothing because they are aluminum only frame, engine block if cast iron survive, pretty funny actually..People think Semi Trucks are steel and get confused when they melt to nothing..If you know, you know!
Please share the link
Really! I didn’t need or don’t need to see vids on the strengths of steel versus aluminum to know the difference. I don’t understand. At the end of the day! You’ve got a truck. Had the 2016 f150 lariat, great truck no problems. I knew it was aluminum so i was a little more cautious but it held up good didn’t smack it with a crobar or anything, but liked it. Liked it so much i stuck with it (aluminum body)when i bought a 2017 f350. Don’t knock it trucks are supposed to get holes and dents and yes. an occasional crowbar or bat (those crazy x old lady’s hmmph!). Yah you guys that have that problem with women.... yah stick with the steel. It’s a choice and or a preference. We ford guys know but we still buy them why? Hmm idk, great truck maybe. Well my 2 cents
Not a Good Day for a Ford Super Duty Aluminum - lets just call this the video before this one ok? Here is the link to compare Steel To Aluminum - czcams.com/video/zb5VVX5EHAw/video.html - It was made 2 weeks ago.
So steel is harder than aluminum? Wow thanks for the info. I wonder why they make trucks out of aluminum? Could it be because aluminum is lighter and gets better fuel economy.
Every truck bed that's made now days is Impractical in shity. That's why you throw that shit away and put a flatbed on it.
I'm glad Chevy's are still steal
Where’s the aluminum?
I'll stick with my 95 ranger
What the hell was this video supposed to be.?
If they can make steel lighter and not rust then it'll be the perfect metal
Galvanised AHSS
Why I wont buy new computer trucks 🤘
where is d comparison? Story telling was happen
Id rather have aluminum it’s plenty strong as long as u don’t decide to smack ur truck with various junkyard tools and don’t run into stuff all over town and it won’t rust
Great video! No offense to all the Ford guy's out there, but I don't see the advantage of having an aluminum body! The weight savings that Ford announced before the 15 F-150 came out was nothing IMO! Not to mention your insurance is probably a bit more on one of these trucks due to more expensive labor and materials to repair one of these! When a manufacturer can tout 1000 lbs of weight savings or more, I'll be impressed! Until then, the aluminum is simply adding cost to an already over priced truck! Keep up the good work sir!
I live in the midwest, and the rust resistance would be a big advantage to me.
Advantage is lighter body= heavier frame and suspension components. That how Ford is able to lead both payload and towing capabilitys. Insurances have been proven time and time again to be equivalent regardless of body type, whether you cave in your bedside on an aluminum or a steel truck it's going to be replaced versus repaired 99% of the time. Most damages to come to any vehicle is going to be minor dings and dents and in those cases aluminum shows a much higher resistance due to the greater elasticity and thicker gauge of the body panels.
R Shiery all very true points
steel is stronger
Dose it do what it intended ,you really shouldn't hit any thing with the point of any thing much less a crowbar num nuts
Aluminum has greater strength than steel where used in structural section stamped out section to form safety cells etc sheet strength is poor it easy punctured or dented and the metal stretch so removing dents is difficult compared to steel wheel chrystaline structure is sheet for is much stronger. But outside dufurce do not need to be super strong as they are just cladding over the strengthen pressed sections.
Alu, is a softer metal but a strong metal when formed into a shape. It absorbs energy on impact much better than steel i do not think fair to compare in this way the could stamp a pattern into 5he side panels giving more strength but customer want smooth sides so it a compromise . The both do the same job equally well the Alu body will last longer it will not rust as much giving a longer life span.
Composite material will be used next
Of course steel is stronger. But it’s also heavier. And I don’t plan to punch holes in my truck. 😁
What if I plan to punch holes in your truck?
For 100k go rock crawling in your super duty
would be a short video.
Well there's 7 minutes I'll never get back. You didn't even do the aluminum truck. Your opinion is just that, your opinion. I saw a video where a guy took a sledgehammer to a 2015 truck. It bounced off 3 times. If it where steel it would've went through. People seemed to forget Ford uses military grade aluminum. Clearly your a GMC guy or something. Be blessed
I have a Dodge Ram, and paper machete is stronger than that rusted out POS!
QUIT HITTING THAT BABY YOU MONSTER I'M CALLING THE COPS
Even the manufacturers know that steel is stronger.... they only switched to aluminum to save weight....
Aluminum is the way to go. Im not going around hitting my pick up with a sledgehammer or dropping pavers into my bed from 7 feet above the ground. If that's how you treat your vehicles buy a Chevy they're already junk.
Jump up on the good of an old 75 ford. Highly ? Now jump up on the hood of any of these new trucks ? Again game over "! Argument over y'all have a nice day boy ya hear!
Obviously steel will hold up more than aluminum
To be a prick you puncture and rip a fella's 'AlumiDuty' but just 4 inch rip in his blinker tubes.
