I respect Joan for her grit and courage. Flipping off men of power along the way. This woman is a fighter from the jump. You need a strong stubborn mind to compete in Hollywood. Can you imagine if they both were friends? They could've started their own studio.
She was a hero!!! Back then it was unheard of to go against men especially in their careers. But, she refused to be pushed around! I adore her!!!!! What strength and courage. Simply fabulous ❤
this "thing" is plagued with mistakes .... in 1952 Crawford had a huge hit Sudden Fear , big box office and critically acclaimed movie , third Oscar nomination .... and she produced it .
No mention of Joan's 1950s films Johnny Guitar, Sudden Fear, Autumn Leaves, The Best of Everything, Queen Bee, The Story of Esther Costello and Torch Song all successful with Crawford fans.
I heard Crawford was extremely professional in her career. Not really difficult. Even Bette Davis said she was always on time, knew her lines, and was a professional.
This is what Bette stated in her interview with Larry King "Well, she [Christina] was a pretty destitute girl living in a motel out in the valley, and Joan did not give her anything. And it really was a book about an adopted child looking for love all her life. That was more important than the actual things Joan did. It's possible maybe it shouldn't have been done."
I absolutely agree! The quality in actors and movies were at it's best! It's is so difficult to find a movie I really like today. I myself am a actress and my inspirations are the actors of the Silver Screen.
Enjoyed this very much! Baby Jane is one of my favorite movies. My ex husband and I still text each other crazy scene lines from this macabre movie and we laugh so hard.
I think both Joan and Betty had an understanding of how each other were. They may have clashed because they were both dominate women with how serious they took their careers. Both having children who spoke out about their mothers showed that. I love them both. What amazing women they really were. They would have been able to achieve alot more in what they wanted in their careers if writers would not have 2nd class stereotyped them. Women in acting then was not very wide ranged as today. In today's time they would have outshine every one of today.
these 2women are &will always be a legend that no others will ever meager up to! Hollywood in them days would have been the place to be! oh I do love that era in time how glamorous how fun the nights out dancing ( you know minus all the pills and alcohol lol ) what I'd do to just get one day 24hours somewhere anywhere in the years between 1935 & 1945 I'd be a very happy girl! 💖💖
Can you imagine if Bette and Joan both had been nominated for "Baby Jane," and Joan had won? Bette would have ripped out every seat in the theatre, not to mention what she would have done to Joan.
Miriam Hopkins was the only Actress not afraid of Bette Davis. Miriam Hopkins had the right as she was a Star much longer than Bette Davis, as was Joan Crawford.
I think Joan Crawford wanted to get along with Bette Davis however I feel Bette Davis was the one who was nasty to her. Even during Baby Jane, Davis never acknowledged Crawford and that may have tipped her off to campaign against Bette for the Oscars.
I just realized how similar are the themes of Sunset Boulevard and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. "Sunset" being made about 7 years before "Jane." both are really good films! I was always more partial to Davis than Crawford. but Crawford was excellent in The Women and Davis is unsurpassable in All About Eve. thanks for the upload.
@@timsuppes9163 And being nominated for awards in 1947's Possessed and the early 1950s for Sudden Fear. Joan Crawford was a great actress, and I loved her performances in most of her films.
One of the things I remembered back when my Mom was still alive she would read anything memoirs of anyone from Hollywood of the golden age and before. She always had books especially if it was about these two women. She didn't think of using the term good or bad in this search through those people there. I feel like that has been something I've also followed while going through history as well.
Whatever Happened top Baby Jane and Sunset Boulevard being two movies, along with Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte were movies my Mom thought was the ultimate in well written well directed and played roles. Other than Sunset being ones that had a perfection that was something that just can't be equaled today.
Joan Crawford was Brilliant in the Night Gallery segment 'Eyes' in 1969...but this doest't get mention much they seem to remember Trog and Berserk......her last acting experience was in 1972 on the tv series The Sixth Sense
I can't wait to watch this series on t.v ..both fantastic actresses but boy did they hate each other...Jessica Lang and Susan Sarandon perfect both great actresses too I can't think of two better people to play them
Great stuff. Thanks as always for your great Joan Crawford random's and rarities that I have almost come to expect from your channel! :) One of the few channels i genuinely get excited to see a new video from. Keep up the good work.
This "documentary", like Ryan Murphy's Feud and Considine's book Bette and Joan: The Divine Feud, is based on nothing but gossip and rumors started by the Hollywood publicity machine. Bette and Joan weren't friends, but they weren't enemies either. Of course, we'll never know the real story. And fans are still pitting them against each other, comparing them, insulting them. Just look at the comments below. Do yourselves a favor- read their memoirs, watch their films between 1938 and 1958 (their best years), enjoy Baby Jane for what it is, and let this feud business die. If i may suggest these films: Bette- Jezebel, Dark Victory, Now Voyager, A Stolen Life, All About Eve. Joan- A Woman's Face, Mildred Pierce, Harriet Craig, Sudden Fear, Autumn Leaves.
Thanks for uploading all of this information and it was very well organized. I am a lifelong fan of both actresses and thru this I learned facts and rumors that I had never heard of. Concluding Chapter of Crawford. So thanks again for posting, I have several questions about many of the things this documentary brought up. I have read many biographies and both rumors and facts about both and had never heard of Concluding Chapter of Crawford. Thanks again for uploading 🤓🤓🤓I love to learn about Hollywood actors and actresses from the era where scandals and even rumors could be career ending. Now in this age of Donald Trump being president and our culture changing it's nice to remember the glitz and glamour before Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook brought every little thing into the light and go back to remember the days when a divorce could end your career.
Very informative doc. Thanks for posting this vid. I learned way more info about these two legendary actresses. It seems like Hollywood cranked out more films back n the day, but I could b wrong. Today with all of the cable networks and Internet websites, it is harder to lock down a true movie star. People get famous for sex tapes and crappy reality tv. Where is the talent factor? Nothing compares to Hollywood's golden era. Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts & George Clooney r all way over paid actors.
I wish The Miracle Worker was not made in the same time. I would of loved Joan and Bette to win awards for Baby Jane. But I was crazy about The Miracle Worker! i loved both films...but The Miracle Worker/subject matter, and performances were intensely more engrossing to me!
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane isn't any kind of black comedy. What a peculiar thing to say. They were seen as jokes as actresses because of their age and the attitudes to ageing women in Hollywood. While make actors' careers didn't suffer as they got older, women's parts declined. This film started the much derided genre of so called "hagsploitation" films in the 60's. They weren't taken seriously. This film is wonderful but it isn't a comedy, it's a poignant tragedy. What a shame the studios didn't treat it with the care it deserved. It was made on a shoestring. The production values were low. It's still an unforgettable classic movie though. The two stars are incandescent in it.
Such bizarrely similar lives yet total opposite people. Joan was more real on screen but was the movie star off screen, always. Bette was opposite of that. But Bette did seem very petty towards Joan. I know that any girl entering Hollywood at the time she did would have been wary of Joan's stardom as she already had her name in concrete but aside from the Franchot Tone thing, there is no known incident to make Bette dislike Joan and start the rivalry. And it probably wasn't that much of a rivalry anyhow. Two people who truly dislike one another, let alone hate one another, are not going to do a movie together. And there was litterally zero feud on that movie set. But Bette cerrianly never missed an opportunity to shit on Joan. And she gets away with it, somehow.
I can see the jealousy coming more from Betty Davis. Joan Crawford pretty much carried her refinement to the end. Joan was by far the best actress, and even the crack Betty made about Joan being a crier, was part true. It was that talking sometimes sounding like she was crying is what I found so good about Joan's acting, making it sound so realistic. ✌❤🙏🎵
"Whatever happened to Baby Janel" scared me so much when it came out but I was just a kid. Idk If you should watch it or not because it's so disgusting plus could and I'm sure has happened before. Okay. I warned you!!! Now, Go watch it lol
"They both found thier careers sagging quite low" Bet he wlould nat have made that sediment about male actors. But of course that would be a compliment for a man .
Some of the best work has come from feuds historically, whether in music, acting, art or science. As has some of the most unnecessary friction & sabotage. Clearly this one didn't get to the point of violence but some resulted in that or worse. Other famous feuds are clearly faked for publicity.
They really weren't Rivals it takes two to tango, Bette Davis was just terribly insecure she basically fought with all her female colleagues .Joan Crawford actually liked her.
@1:49....Bette Davis was such a liar.....there is NO scene in WHTBJ ; where Jane pushes Blanche down the stairs! Man....she was so delusional, jealous and obsessed with Joan Crawford!
beautiful documentary, anyway Bette a very overrated actress, great only in the same role of psycho woman while Joan very underrated actress, much more complete in all kind of roles
These two actresses were great. They cannot be duplicated by any other actor.
this "thing" is plagued with mistakes .... in 1952 Crawford had a huge hit Sudden Fear , big box office and critically acclaimed movie , third Oscar nomination .... and she produced it .
Gosh, Crawford really was stunning in her time.
No mention of Joan's 1950s films Johnny Guitar, Sudden Fear, Autumn Leaves, The Best of Everything, Queen Bee, The Story of Esther Costello and Torch Song all successful with Crawford fans.
Can't help but to love these women.
Both are talented actress. You have to be talented if people are still watching your movies today.
I heard Crawford was extremely professional in her career. Not really difficult. Even Bette Davis said she was always on time, knew her lines, and was a professional.
I never knew my two favorites were rivals at their best.
I did like how Bette Davis defended Joan Crawford against the book Christina wrote.
I saw her do that, too…
Yes she did! That is classy!!! I love both of them so much!
This is what Bette stated in her interview with Larry King
"Well, she [Christina] was a pretty destitute girl living in a motel out in the valley, and Joan did not give her anything. And it really was a book about an adopted child looking for love all her life. That was more important than the actual things Joan did. It's possible maybe it shouldn't have been done."
I like them both. Real professional actresses during their time.
Joan Crawford was a Star at MGM for years before Bette Davis even reached Hollywood.
Two great actresses ! Loved their movies, still watch them . That’s when Hollywood was at its best! Now it’s Hollywierd!

Awesome STARS from the golden age of Hollywood, I love both of them.
You Mean All This This Time They Could Have Been Friends?
Two Aries women competitive with each other? Difficult? Arrogant? Impossible!!! Lol
Can't wait for Ryan Murphy's series "Feud" to start. Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis. Should be good!
Joan Crawford is great in "Rain", and it holds up imho.
Long Live The Queens of Hollywood

I worked w/Bette Davis in a TV movie - A PIANO FOR MRS CIMINO

Joan Crawford for me.

That's incorrect, Sunset Blvd came out 12 years before Baby Jane
In 1950
Joan Crawford was a fox! Holy shit! Beautiful woman!
I used to live a few blocks from Bette's house in Lowell. It's a great little city :)
Wow, they are just both such interesting gentlemen. Guys these days don't hold a candle to these fine actors.

I've seen several docs on JC with Anita Page shading her. I think she was jealous and bitter of JC's beauty and success.
I enjoyed this. Thank you for posting.
I think Bette Davis&Joan Crawford were the same kind of women.

I love Joan! She's so obviously a STAR on the screen. Bette is fine. She just over-acts her parts for my taste!

Thanks for uploading. I would like to have known the names of the less well known movies they made between 45 and 50
Interesting..since Bette Davis slammed Christina's book of Joanne.
Love it, thanks.
They were not really rivals. They belonged to different studios the majority of the time and was not in competition for roles.
Well done.
That was interesting, but proved that there was no feud.
Fabulous x
Very interesting
I don't remember Bette Davis forgiving B.D. for that book?!
