Sonic has always been relevant, but has he ever been this relevant and had this much focus on him since the 90's? I feel like my man is practically everywhere these days. If frontiers do good, the series may stay on the up and up. On another note, I'm curious. How would people feel if Sonic pulled another Mario (yes, I know) and retired the classic design (could still be used as ult costumes and stuff or be in spinoffs) and just made 2D Sonic games with updated Sonic advanced sprites. Also I really wish and hope sega brings Mighty (and I guess Ray-indifferent to him) to the modern games. Shoot if he needs a squad then just throw in Ray and honey and call it a day lol
My childhood took place in the 90s and I can tell you with some confidence that your questioning is on the right track. Sonic as popular as he was, he wasn't everywhere... But that's for the simple fact that video games weren't yet the media powerhouse it has become today. It was from the generation after 16-bit that video games became such a massive thing that they stopped being this gimmicky culture and became something that naturally began to influence other forms of entertainment. Needless to say, much of this was influenced by the internet.
To be honest ye he has been more relevant In the 2000s like shadow the hedgehog released in 2005 followed by sonic rush and sonic gems collection then sonic 06 in 2006 and while sonic 06 was being made sonic and the secret rings was being made and the riders series was getting started and I think they were getting the rights to Mario for the Olympic Games series sonic X the tv show was a started from 2003-2007 so that was still going on at the time and a sonic x game for the leapster and it goes without saying but the sonic comic books were still being made.
@@hanirehmani9613 haha, well sonic 4 had a lot of different issues. I was thinking something more along the lines of sonic mania, but just with modern sprites used instead. Same game play and style, just with different sprites.
It's kind of funny to think about how many Disney films Sonic has actually shown up in, and how in all of them it's the gross old movie design that actually saves the day. Truly a redemption arc, enough of one to make Anakin Skywalker run for his money.
I love how ugly sonic was used in this movie and the fact he had a redemption in the movie made it better. The fact ugly sonic is helping sonic more and the fact this version probably gonna be a good version now seems so unreal now.
I just realized, in-universe this guy got fired from the movie after the first trailer, so is the guy in the movie (Final design) also an actor? I mean, actual-Sonic is busy with his games and has to keep his trademark look, so it'd make sense.
When I first heard about Ugly Sonic being in the film, I was just expecting a cameo or a dedicated scene. However, it was a pleasant surprise to have him be this involved with the plot!
I think the movie was FINE, the bootlegging plot was certainly interesting and a good take on what can happen to animation in our society. But SOMETHING about the animation on Chip and other traditionally animated characters made it SO hard for me to get invested. I think it's literally just 3D but with different shading. And they're CALLING it TRADITIONALLY cell shaded animation when it just isn't. It feels like a slap in the face to traditionally created characters. Meanwhile the CGI characters don't look half bad. cell shaded 3D animation looks like sh*t.
It doesn't ruin the film - for me at least - but it does look distractingly cheap. It just lacks those subtle imperfections and stylistic choices that you simply can't achieve with a rendering effect on a perfect 3D model. "Cel shading", for lack of a better term, can look amazing, but not when it is trying to be a substitute for an already established style. Even the closest you can get will still fall into that uncanny valley where something looks off about it.
@@alfo2804 The thing is,it can totally be part of recreating other styles, look at any modern Arc System Works fighting game today and you can see how well they recreate an anime style in a 3D environment (Some people might be fooled),but that doesn't require only cel shading, but also a bunch of other stuff that im too lazy to mention (for the people reading, watch Funke's video on it if you haven't it's good.)
I just watched the movie. The amount of nostalgic references and callbacks to movies I had watched during my childhood and growing up had hit me so hard. Ugly Sonic was just the Icing on that sweet nostalgia cake. I hope Paramount releases a blu ray cut of the first Sonic Movie just before the third movie releases. I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea but it would be interesting.
First, Dude, calm the f**k down. Second, old movie Tails wouldn't fit in this story because 1, we never saw an old movie Tails for that to even work and 2, Ugly Sonic's role in the story feels more like a redemption for the character. Also, for the Old movie tails idea to work, they would had to release a cut of the first movie with the original design before the Chip and Dale movie ever released.
I was one of those people who didn't mind this design of Sonic, and I was focusing on how my boi was getting a movie. Don't get me wrong, the redesign is so much better, but there was still something inside me that wondered "Is that really it for the old design?" Well, nope. The Chip and Dale movie revived him, and made him probably the funniest part of this movie.
I think it's possible SEGA will use him more as his own character within the greater Sonic franchise because this movie redeemed him and made him more than just a one-off joke since the writers didn't see him as a bad version of the Sonic character, just badly designed _as Sonic_.
It was such a lovely surprise that ugly sonic got to play a role in this movie! Also, the original voice actor for Lumiere passed away in 04 (Jerry Orbach). Jeff Bennett does an amazing impression for this movie.
Lmfaooo, this really is too much. I didn't expect the movie to go THIS HARD, both regarding Ugly Sonic and just in general. Looks like I need Disney+, someone hook a fellow Ugly Sonic Turtloid Warrior up
Disney + is actually a pretty good purchase just in general, minus the premium BS (Seriously, $30 US just to watch one movie in theaters within a 24-hour period? Sorry, but I'd rather do HBO Max with that shit.), simply because of how much content it has outside of disney movies.
@@kenn_k Do it for Marvel, too. WandaVision and What if... are awesome and Loki is great and Falcon and the Winter Soldier are a'ight. Havent seen Hawkeye, but heard it's good
I heard the film was a pretty easy meta thing to watch while folding laundry and that’s it. I had no idea and this cameo hit me very hard and I actually had to pause the movie to laugh for 3 minutes.
Sonic fans are mocking Ugly Sonic but the dude had a chance at stardom and an entire fanbase rejected him. And despite it all, he still has a positive attitude. And he still wants to entertain. He's not given up. And that alone redeems the character. He needs a 2nd chance. And maybe even his own official game.
What's really funny is in the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Sonic mentioned The Rock (Dwayne Johnson), and Ugly Sonic is almost a parallel to The Rock. The Rock debut as Rocky Maivia and everybody hated him, so he rolled with the hate and he won everyone over, and became a movie star.
I just find it amazing and love how the original sonic design has changed the world so much…! It’s made such an impact even Disney wants in on the fun lol
I believe it's basically the fact the character doesn't take serious and it isn't take serious. That's what it hits, because it actually subvert the expectations. And the fact who is a separate entity makes it even better.
Who would of Thought that of all the places to learn proper lessons in the modern era we'd come to chip and dale for it. Since I want to be optimistic, I really hope SEGA and other companies watched this movie and learned that you can turn something bad into something worthwhile. Literally every artists starts off bad, yet companies try to act as if they're not the same, Embrace the bad and turn it into something good. (Just don't go all the memey way like Sonic Twitter does because it'll get stale) I'm glad Ugly Sonic was in the movie once I'm free I'mma watch this movie!
Am I the only one who likes the original design? This "Ugly Sonic" looks like an actual anthropromorphic hedgehog..... But I don't like the constant close ups to his mouth......
Actually, besides the fact that he looks like an actual anthropromorphic hedgehog, he also kinda reminds me of that live version of the Cat in the Hat.
I always wanted a sequel to Roger Rabbit, Space Jam 2 tried to pretend it with all those cameos over the place, but Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers is truly the spiritual successor. I thoght it was impossible for this times making something like that because of all the copyright crap and the rough competition between streming services, Disney really impressed me this time
He was never ugly, he was a legend in cinema history, he was perfect, he was the original…. Without him, there wouldn’t be a Sonic movie, or a sequel. We salute to “Ugly” Sonic. 🫃
Yes, reviews of other movies sounds cool from you! I barely ever watch TV or movies anymore, but I love to see people analyze them like you do. Only gotten into sonic media at all this year because I introduced a couple of my friends who share a mutual love for the franchise. And read some old comics the other week when visiting one of them. Was surprised I liked it so much then found and binged your IDW speed reading over the last few days. I love your style of review and how much you care about what makes sense for characters, how their actions relate to their motivations. If that’s something that’d carry over into reviews of movies outside of the sonic franchise, I’d watch them for sure! Unless I don’t care for the movie, who knows!?
To balance out some of these, really genuinely myopic takes from the perspective of a fanbase, he could do a series of reviews of ONLY these live-action remakes and just try to have some kind of a balanced and fair look to how "the fan reaction" is the be-all, end-all thing to focus on. What really has to happen is take good look at Woody Woodpecker, Peter Rabbit, THE CHIPMUNKS movies, and then try to come back to repeat some of the fanbase's grand statements in the context of the two Sonic movies. And that's only scratching the surface of even trying to point out what actually makes MOVIES good at all, other than taking a known IP and pandering with it. Don't even consider hard mode like figuring out what made Clockwork orange and Fight Club PREFERRED alternate takes according to the book authors. Or the big fat dumb Joaquin Phoneix managed to take on Joker without ruining the movie at all.
3:01 Voice actor nerd trivia: That's not the original Lumiere voice actor. That was Jerry Orbach, from Law and Order. This new guy, Jeff Bennett, has done tons of other recognizable voices over the years. His most famous voice role is Johnny Bravo.
I like how he doesn't even have his speed. It still belongs to the "other Sonic" lol 😆. I'm sorry, but I loved this stupid movie. Had a blast watching this
The movie seems fine though the villain they chose for this feels….wrong. Spoilers down below Peter Pan is the villain, and it feels very bad. Basically the reason is centered around what happened to the actual actor of Peter Pan back in the original film. Pretty much after his role in the Disney film he basically couldn’t really get anything else he was just left to rot with seemingly no support from Disney. His later life gets real depressing and comparing it to the way Peter Pan’s motive is handled in the movie is eerily similar except instead of being homeless and dying alone he becomes a mob boss. It feels a little disrespectful even though it obviously wasn’t intentional (or at least I hope to god it wasn’t actually intentional) one other weird thing along with this that happened before the movie’s release is a thing from Disney saying Tinkerbell and Captain Hook were considered problematic so having Peter Pan be the villain feels like they’re just trying to burn down the franchise to the ground and avoid needing to bring it up later

Needless to say I love the sonic movies cuz of the fact that it focuses on family and them as children
I just saw the clips of Ugly Sonic and it actually makes me want to see the movie. They were legit entertaining. I do certainly hope that's not the ONLY entertaining bit though. :/
I'm kinda over the current 'meta era' as I've heard it being called, in media where the new key to a cheep chuckle is to just throw in as many references as possible. So I'll probably still not give this film the time of day. That being said, good on Paramount for taking the joke in stride!! It's good to see them embrace the mistake rather than try and act like it never happened, which nobody would've blamed them if they did.
that super smash bros. spoof of the disney afternoon(would absolutely love a game like that just handled better/hope we see more revivals of the disney afternoon.:3) was my favorite part, especially the deep cut showing the ren and stimpy knock offs. while i like his actual intended movie way more than this/am so glad we got the tyson design,i thought it was really funny(what dc should be doing with teen tiatns just giving the og series another season and ending go keeping it to playful jabs at it.) and did like that playful joke with him being washed out just from being rejected art, dale just chatting with sonic and find it actually nice he saved chip and dale at the end.(honestly like it a bit more than his appearance in wreck it ralph/wish the game appearances in breaks the internet was more like this or mario mario was handled like that.) actually thought who framed roger rabbit with of all things roger's appearance(my favorite as i wish it was the 2 chipmunks in a buddy movie with him.) and while i still think it has the problem of being way too meta at times(unless if we see those series characters appear in person with a more major role if it continues.) but did think it was alright as a redemption to the ugly sonic design that kinda felt similar to sonic in the dark ages.(would rather infinite, mephiles outside runners, ken and shadow with a gun outside parodies stay gone but do love when sonic has fun laughing about the good & bad moments with it's history like in the boom cartoon.)
I flipped out the hardest when there was a cameo from "Mr. Natural" of all people. As far as I'm aware, he's mostly known for appearing in some very raunchy, very adult, very alternative indie comics in the 1970's. The fact they snuck him in to a Disney movie is completely insane. Like, to the point where, if you don't know the character, I'd genuinely be careful googling the comics! You may see something you REALLY aren't prepared for!

Or sonics fake crash
The Archie Sonic comics give us good Modern Mighty and Ray designs that they could potentially use
To be honest ye he has been more relevant
In the 2000s like shadow the hedgehog released in 2005 followed by sonic rush and sonic gems collection then sonic 06 in 2006 and while sonic 06 was being made sonic and the secret rings was being made and the riders series was getting started and I think they were getting the rights to Mario for the Olympic Games series sonic X the tv show was a started from 2003-2007 so that was still going on at the time and a sonic x game for the leapster and it goes without saying but the sonic comic books were still being made.
I believe they allready did that with sonic the hedgehog 4 parts 1 and 2. It... didnt go over that well compared to sonic 1,2,3&K,cd, and even mania
?
What's the other one?
@@ghhn4505 sonic appears in both of the wreck it ralph movies
@@2000sKingdomHeartzFudanshi he wasn't in his "old gross movie design" there though.
@@mmgmagic I was referring to Sonic's cameos overall.
Ugly Sonic *exists*
Shaggy: “Finally a worthy opponent”
DAU canon?
Our battle will be, like, LEGENDARY!
Yup
Precisely
Cell shaded 3D animation looks sick, but only when done right, this movie does not do it right
Yeah it didn't pop like it does in Jet Set Radio or Wind Waker
It doesn't ruin the film - for me at least - but it does look distractingly cheap.
It just lacks those subtle imperfections and stylistic choices that you simply can't achieve with a rendering effect on a perfect 3D model.
"Cel shading", for lack of a better term, can look amazing, but not when it is trying to be a substitute for an already established style. Even the closest you can get will still fall into that uncanny valley where something looks off about it.
If you want to see some amazing cel shading 3D,go play the anime video games. Those cel shading 3D we're amazing and capture the 2D looks in 3D.
I wanna see the unused version of _Tails_ more than Ugly Sonic in Sonic 1.
@@tcrpgfan First, What does that have to do with what I said? Second, that doesn't even f**cking make sense.
@@landontrahan5770 Everything, as a Yandere is categorized as an obsessive stalker.
@@tcrpgfan 🙂
It was such a lovely surprise that ugly sonic got to play a role in this movie! Also, the original voice actor for Lumiere passed away in 04 (Jerry Orbach). Jeff Bennett does an amazing impression for this movie.
This is the craziest live-action CGI hybrid I've ever seen.
honestly, if Sega approved of this, this is amazing, kinda sad they didn't have Ben to voice him though
Tim Robinson was a better fit
I can’t even, I prayed for Ugly Sonic to save the day at the end. God heard my prayers.
@@tcrpgfan I did actually have it for a brief period last year, definitely considering diving back in! I'm having 90's Simpsons withdrawals
@@kenn_k Do it for Marvel, too. WandaVision and What if... are awesome and Loki is great and Falcon and the Winter Soldier are a'ight. Havent seen Hawkeye, but heard it's good
This movie had no business being as good as it was. I really enjoyed it
I love it when memes are embraced
"Release your stupid comic."
I laughed way harder at this than I should have. 😆
It’s kinda amazing that we go two Sonic Movies in the same year. It’s also nice that “Ugly” Sonic got some closure.
I was waiting on you to cover this!
Shrek shampoo and Scrooge at the spa were my favorite references.
I dunno, asking Ken Penders to be a respectable human being is a bit too far.
So many people lost respect to him after the fall of Archie comics
Imagine if he had a cameo
@@am-asx1012 I think they lost respect towards him after the Archie reboot, not cancellation.
@Snaksi I agreed 🫥
I'm so glad we didnt get him in the sonic movies, BUT MAN AM I GLAD HE WAS IN THIS MOVIE, fucking loved ugly sonic
Glad to hear he's actually part of the FBI. Thats kinda wholesome.
I believe it's basically the fact the character doesn't take serious and it isn't take serious. That's what it hits, because it actually subvert the expectations. And the fact who is a separate entity makes it even better.
Dude the movie just came out and people are going crazy, I love this
Now that it's confirmed that he's a separate character, I expect him to be in the 3rd sonic movie or I will be extremely disappointed
This community is awesome. XD
Ugly Sonic was great but my favorite little set dressing piece was the bench advertising "Governor Butt-Head".
Finally, sonic is getting Ws after years of being a straight up L
This is just the weirdest thing and I love it
NO WAY- I’M STOPPING THE VIDEO TO WATCH THE MOVIE HOLD ON
IM BACK AND WHAT MADMAN MADE HIM A MAJOR CHARACTER I LOVE IT????
"I love how they used Gadget in this movie"
You are a sick, SICK man
I've waiting for your take since I knew this existed.
Three times have Sonic appeared in a Disney film. Two officially, and now as a parody.
Am I the only one who likes the original design? This "Ugly Sonic" looks like an actual anthropromorphic hedgehog.....
But I don't like the constant close ups to his mouth......
Yes, you are the only one.
Yea I like it just fine too. I wanna see a move with him in it. A full movie.
Actually, besides the fact that he looks like an actual anthropromorphic hedgehog, he also kinda reminds me of that live version of the Cat in the Hat.
Well is not bad as long as he gets his own persona and not Sonic the hedgehog
I like him too but I prefer the new sonic
I literally stopped watching the video and watched the entire movie first, I regret nothing
Too bad Disney didn’t make a deal with SEGA and paramount to make a dlc for sonic forces: battle and sonic dash featuring ugly sonic.
Pretty sure they wouldn't need Disney's help
I really wish, that in the scene at the end, when ugly Sonic appears, it played gangsters paradise. That would have been so perfect.
I always wanted a sequel to Roger Rabbit, Space Jam 2 tried to pretend it with all those cameos over the place, but Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers is truly the spiritual successor. I thoght it was impossible for this times making something like that because of all the copyright crap and the rough competition between streming services, Disney really impressed me this time
Imagine this Sonic having a sitcom show literally called "Ugly Sonic".
He was never ugly, he was a legend in cinema history, he was perfect, he was the original…. Without him, there wouldn’t be a Sonic movie, or a sequel. We salute to “Ugly” Sonic. 🫃
I don’t deny that but I feel this is like saying that the many deaths of the Black Plague is a good thing for helping us make medications.
Can you PLEASE explain the emoji at the end.
Ayo explain that emoji 🫣
Obviously
The emoji represents ugly Sonic’s beer belly lol.
I'm waiting for Disney to ask for the rights to Sonic, and Sega goes "you can have ugly Sonic"
" Deal, and in return, we'll help pay for the new Sonic Design "
I didn't like this movie, but using Sonic's old design in the movie literally gets me.🤣
I love how they made Ugly Sonic actually loved, to whoever made this movie… I’m really happy you had Ugly Sonic in it
3:01 Voice actor nerd trivia: That's not the original Lumiere voice actor. That was Jerry Orbach, from Law and Order. This new guy, Jeff Bennett, has done tons of other recognizable voices over the years. His most famous voice role is Johnny Bravo.
Despite his appearance, he seems like a pretty nice guy
doesn't need redemption. he was perfect to begin with
i think my favorite cameo was the whole scene with all the characters seth rogan voiced laughing
I like how he doesn't even have his speed. It still belongs to the "other Sonic" lol 😆. I'm sorry, but I loved this stupid movie. Had a blast watching this
The movie seems fine though the villain they chose for this feels….wrong. Spoilers down below
Peter Pan is the villain, and it feels very bad.
To be honest Peter Pan kinda fits as a villain
Peter Pan was a villain in the original material. He killed kids so they wouldn't grow up
Tinker bell and hook were “problematic” wtf? Everything is problematic nowadays
@@VelvetAura Didn’t he kill kids so the kids didn’t have to grow up? Not him killing the kids so he could stay young
Considering Tink "problematic" is rich, coming from the company that put out like 10 Tinker Bell movies during the 2000s and 2010s.
God fucking damnit, now I gotta add him to the sonic multiverse list...

Tho I really love the actual sonic movies, not exactly teenage action type but the fact that they’re children and the mf started calling Tom “Dad” just made me feel heart-warmed. Needless to say I love the sonic movies cuz of the fact that it focuses on family and them as children
Now I want ugly sonic now to have his own Disney + series now
I just saw the clips of Ugly Sonic and it actually makes me want to see the movie. They were legit entertaining. I do certainly hope that's not the ONLY entertaining bit though. :/
Its not!! This is a 80s and 90s nostalgia pop culture super fun ride or anything like that! Loved it!
Mark my words after this ugly sonic is gonna have a spring in popularity and will get a cult following him
This is my first knowledge of this - i need to watch this film now. I didn't realise how meta it was
I mean he is not ugly anymore when I first saw him I was mad about Sega but now he is good hope to see him again
I didn’t watch the movie, but because of this I’ll definitely watch it!
I'm kinda over the current 'meta era' as I've heard it being called, in media where the new key to a cheep chuckle is to just throw in as many references as possible. So I'll probably still not give this film the time of day. That being said, good on Paramount for taking the joke in stride!! It's good to see them embrace the mistake rather than try and act like it never happened, which nobody would've blamed them if they did.
that super smash bros. spoof of the disney afternoon(would absolutely love a game like that just handled better/hope we see more revivals of the disney afternoon.:3) was my favorite part, especially the deep cut showing the ren and stimpy knock offs.
while i like his actual intended movie way more than this/am so glad we got the tyson design,i thought it was really funny(what dc should be doing with teen tiatns just giving the og series another season and ending go keeping it to playful jabs at it.) and did like that playful joke with him being washed out just from being rejected art, dale just chatting with sonic and find it actually nice he saved chip and dale at the end.(honestly like it a bit more than his appearance in wreck it ralph/wish the game appearances in breaks the internet was more like this or mario mario was handled like that.)
actually thought who framed roger rabbit with of all things roger's appearance(my favorite as i wish it was the 2 chipmunks in a buddy movie with him.) and while i still think it has the problem of being way too meta at times(unless if we see those series characters appear in person with a more major role if it continues.) but did think it was alright as a redemption to the ugly sonic design that kinda felt similar to sonic in the dark ages.(would rather infinite, mephiles outside runners, ken and shadow with a gun outside parodies stay gone but do love when sonic has fun laughing about the good & bad moments with it's history like in the boom cartoon.)
Oh! I see! Now that another Sonic related topic appears you come out of the woodwork!
