The History of the Waluigi Stadium Ultra Shortcut

- GCN Waluigi Stadium had an ultra shortcut found back in July 2015. However, for a long time, this track was deemed TAS-exclusive to perform it, as beyond getting to the main area of the track to break it with getting the banner clip, the main method required 'rapid fire hop abuse' - hopping on every other frame (30 times per second in a 60fps game) to phase through a halfpipe zipper to land at the end of the track. Come 5 years later, in July 2020 we have successfully pulled off glitch runs using GCN Waluigi Stadium ultra shortcut.
This video details the road from the inception of the initial ultra shortcut to glitch for GCN Waluigi Stadium to all the theories tested and attempted from 2015 until 2020. I had a huge amount of help with ensuring the details and content of the video were factual and accurate and I'm very thankful! I actually wanted to make this video back in January 2020 when Benny confirmed the shroomless banner clip and the 3 shroom half pipe clip and I was trying that on stream. In a way, I'm happy that I hadn't made the video yet, as seeing this finally pulled off in real time made it all the more satisfying and enjoyable making the video highlighting the journey along the way. I hope you all enjoy this video.

What an incredible journey this has been over the past five years! This glitch's long history perfectly encapsulates what makes this community so great: two different worlds - the TAS and RTA communities - working together to bring their unique expertise into something only a large team effort could accomplish. This wasn't the work of a single individual, but of dozens of people working together toward a common goal, and this video does an amazing job at showing that my video from 2015 was just the tip of the iceberg, and that there was still a long road ahead if we ever wanted to see this pulled off RTA. Five years later, we've finally reached this goal, thanks to the hard work of countless people every step of the way. These history videos are just amazing to watch, and I'm so glad you're still in this community, offering this content for us all.

GCN Waluigi Stadium was one of those tracks for a very long time it seemed like it couldn't be broken RTA. This is the journey from the initial discovery by Blaze back in July 2015 with TAS until July 2020 where we have successfully glitched GCN Waluigi Stadium in real time.
I had a huge amount of help with ensuring the details and content of the video were factual and accurate and I'm very thankful! The current best known splits (all with Bullet Bike) currently give a time of 1:41.713, with laps 2 and 3 done by Justin, who did not do the turnskip, but did the shroomless mud shortcut. Although it's not ideal for someone to drive laps 2 and 3 at that caliber after making the glitch, it does show the potential the Bullet Bike has so far with this in RTA runs. For comparison, the best known splits for laps 2 and 3 with the Flame Runner are over a second faster than Justin's Bullet Bike laps.
The most recent development here was discovering the glitch can be done shroomless as well according to Ejay, who knows what could develop down the line...
I'm happy I didn't make this summary video back in January 2020 like I intended, as making this now with everything coming full circle was all the more satisfying and enjoyable making the video highlighting the journey along the way. I feel there's more strategies and glitches undiscovered in, for many of us, our favorite game. Thanks for watching.

That back kick or whatever you want to call it can also be pulled off in GCN DK Mountain. Not that itâs useful for anything, but if you wheelie during the mountain section after the second ramp, and lean as far back and hop when you hit the ground, you get the weirdest back kick, and it usually launches you into the wall. Itâs kinda funny. :P

I love this type of videos! I knew the general development of the ultra shortcut, but I didn't knew about all the details! Gorgeous video! Also,...wait! Actually, the current method requires just one mushroom, therefore it could be done three times in a run (even if it's so hard...), Making an RTA 1:25/1:20 theoretically possible! Anyway, as I said, amazing video, it was so much interesting!

The way to do the ultra on rainbow road is going to the left of the finish line and then jumping to the part of the track right before the U-Turn, but what if you could get to the right side of the finish line, use the pole to wallclip and land right after the U-Turn maybe using only one mushroom. Would that be possible? Has anybody tried yet?
The pole has no collision, and even if it did - you'd just be driving through the finish line backwards anyway, thus subtracting a lap. The reason rSL glitch works is because the finish line ends right at the pole and not any further, so when you clip that pole you aren't passing through the finish line backwards. Rainbow Road's finish line extends out a bit so that's why it's impossible.
this glitch motivates me to tt again... doubt i'll get a world record but i want to at least get a good time with this glitch

i wonder if it is possible to make the first half of the glitch with flame runner using only 1 shroom because i vaguely remember seeing the mach bike can clear the gap from the last jump without using shrooms in a TAF a few years ago.
Edit: I just thought about it and it likely wont happen because the bullet bike was barely able to make it with 1 shroom. Still a fun thought tho.
