Violence breaks out in chaotic Taiwanese parliament

  • Taiwan’s parliament descended into a brawl on Friday just days before the inauguration of Lai Ching-te, the new president.
    Politicians pushed, hit and tackled each other, clambering across tables as they swarmed around the speaker’s seat in the legislative chamber after tempers became heated in a bitter dispute about parliamentary reforms.
    The argument broke out over a push by the main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), and its allies, to give parliament greater powers of scrutiny over the government.
    This includes a controversial move to criminalise officials who are deemed to make false statements in parliament - a proposal which has been rejected by Mr Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as “an unconstitutional abuse of power”.
    The unruly scenes are likely to add to speculation that Mr Lai will face a tougher challenge than President Tsai Ing-wen, his predecessor, in gaining support for his legislative policies after he takes office.

      KMT and TPP parties hold the majority in parliament. They always collaborate to propose bills that are favor a certain foreign power(China) and not based on the interests of the Taiwanese people.
      The content of yesterday's bills has not been made public, and there has been no discussion;
      KMT and TPP were trying to force the bills through.This is not democracy.
      They caused a conflict because DPP were trying to block the passage of the unreasonable bill.
      As Taiwanese, we want to safeguard the hard-earned democracy. We do not want anyone to betray democracy and collude with foreign political forces(China) to undermine the values of democratic governance.

    Don’t like the KMT either but over the last eight years, the Democratic DPP has committed numerous disgraceful acts, and they've tried everything to prevent the bill from being passed. Those who have closely followed recent party negotiations know that DPP legislators never seriously read the provisions but merely delayed proceedings with the aim of obstructing the bill's passage. They even proposed 80 different versions of the bill, with each version differing only in punctuation and a few words. Despite their majority in Congress, the DPP failed to deliver on the reforms promised over the past eight years. It's clear that there's no bill that can't be passed, only those that the DPP doesn't want to pass. Holding all the power, they have allowed Taiwan's wealth gap to reach 66 times while deceiving the international community with claims that only the DPP can protect Taiwan's sovereignty, resulting in severe hardship for the people of Taiwan.

      Some Chinese Communist Party legislators are sponsoring black-box legislation within Taiwan's Legislative Yuan. They force the bill to be filed without content and discussion. This is unacceptable to the people. On May 24, 100,000 people took to the streets to protest against the black-box legislation, which has no content and no discussion. , forced voting, shameful opposition party!

  • @user-oz9wn1if7t
    @user-oz9wn1if7t Před 14 dny +6

    The fight began with procedural justice concerns. The opposition parties united and passed a law involving congressional reforms, including the criminalization of false statements and the enforcement of presidential hearings. The law was approved without scrutiny of each clause, and its contents were kept confidential until the vote was held in Congress. There were no public hearings or suggestions from the ruling party. Legislators from the ruling party were very upset and fought back. It's difficult to judge who is more right because, while I believe this law is good, I understand the opposition parties felt they needed to vote first to prevent the ruling party from delaying it. However, I also believe procedural justice is a crucial mechanism to prevent arbitrariness.

      I doubt that's the reason, from what I got from Western media, the bill criminalizes members of parliament for lying and chamber reform which gives greater scrutiny power over the government. it's obvious that the current ruling party is not going to like that.

    KMT and TPP parties hold the majority in parliament. They always collaborate to propose bills that are favor a certain foreign power(China) and not based on the interests of the Taiwanese people.
    The content of yesterday's bills has not been made public, and there has been no discussion;

      DPP’s former President Tsai still showed up in a cuisine exposition and said nothing when Taiwan was surround by China jet fighters in 2022. Most of her campaign contributions are from real estate developers, let alone the China-funded Shopee shopping site registered in Singapore. Google “wikileaks Taiwan” to know DPP’s politicians have been using anti-China and independence (which US does not allow) as tools for election purposes (Taiwan’s Netanyahu?).

    To give some insight behind the video. According to the DDP male legislator, at first he claimed that he did not remember that he had tackled a female legislator from an opponent party and knocked her off a "stadium" by grabbing her ankles! After people told him it's all caught on the video, he then explained that he accidentally "slipped on a piece of paper" which caused him to leap in the air and bumped into her 🤣 Now the DDP social media, news, TV stations are painting him as a hero to saving Taiwan's democracy.
