How a Stihl EDT 8 Tachometer works and how to use it with a little chainsaw talk mixed in. If you want to see the EDT 8 in action go to the end of this video about chainsaws.
My wife wasn't impressed by the inductive tach, but she did comment on how nicely your garage was arranged and how well you keep your equipment including a 10 year old chainsaw.
Thanks for the good video! You did a great job of staying on the subject and being very clear of what the purpose of this is! Hopefully it will prevent someone from blowing up their engine from being too lean!!!
the L speed screw adjusts the air fuel ratio at idle, and helps provide enough fuel for proper acceleration. The high speed screw adjusts air fuel ratio at fuel throttle. If you don't understand how to tune a saw by ear, or in the cut, a tachometer can be a valuable tool. However you can never dial in the tuning by simply tuning to a set rpm.
WRONG!!........High Screw controls the RPM limit only!!........you SET based on that......there is no "mixture" for High Side......You are setting based on the Manufacturer's Max RPM.....preferably a tad less.
@@94SexyStang The rpm limit on saws without a revlimiting coil at wide open throttle, is controlled by the amount of fuel allowed by the high speed mixture. What do you think that screw does? it controls the amount of fuel at fuel throttle. Every saw do to manufacture variances will reach proper air fuel ratio at a different rpm, tuning to the manufactures recommended rpm is safe, but you will leave performance on the table, and 9 times out of ten the engine will be tuned rich. Before you state something as fact, or say someone is wrong, at least do modicum amount of research on the subject, as you clearly do not even know the basics of how a small engine carburetor works.
@@94SexyStang ?? Really? Lean mixture clockwise turn of high screw will increase rpm and counter clockwise richening will lower rpm, the h screw has no connection or effect on the venturi butterfly throttle opening!
Great video. I am a huge believer in CRC 556/Briggs& Stratton Lube Spray to loosen all manner of things, rather than brute force in the first instance. A little spray and 5 minutes (ie patience) saves breakages and time in the long run. Cheers and KEEP SAFE at all times Dude. From Down Under. JP PS: Hope you use PPE on the job my friend.
HI just bought EDT 8.for my Stihl saws. when time comes to change the battery there must be a way,.someone must have done it.?Best regards from Wales UK
I have other Stihl products like gas power blower and weed whip and yes chainsaw my problem is I can’t find what the RPM’s are on each of these items in my owner’s manual could help me by directing to some site that I would be able to find the RPM’s for my stihl equipment?
My guess would be it could be used on any motor the ignites fuel with a sparkplug. So gasoline, mixed with oil, or not. Also propane, Alcohol, Nat Gas, whatever. There may be a way to use with diesal too, I don't know where you would hook it up though. I have a tach I got off eBay, and I been using them for at least 10 years. They cost between 8, and $20. This looks like a very nice unit, and I may consider one depending on cost. If it runs over $25, I'll stick with my $8 model. They last about 5years, as the battery is not changeable. Though I have changed them in a couple. You can pop them open and swap it, and tape back up but they don't last an additional 5 years. Others they dip the entire electronics in epoxy, so if you manage to open it up, it is destroyed by swapping battery out. The cheaper ones seem easier to get at the battery. After 5 years, it is easier just to buy another. One thing that is too bad, is that the cheapies are also hour meters. So you know how many hours you've ran. I guess becuase of this, there is no way to turn the unit off. It is just on for 5years.
DON'T count on that working, otherwise professionals would use it.....you don't see people flying planes with their Iphone Tiltometer, or building houses with iphone leveling apps.......
Would really find one of these useful but over here in the UK they are silly money. Will have to track down a reliable cheap alternative that is capable of reading the high rpm of a chainsaw.
Hi, nice vid about the edt 8, just purchased one myself to tune my ms 361, worked fine for 4 minutes or so and then the display showed me "none" and the edt 8 switched off by itself and now i can't make it work again, tried to hold it against the running chainsaw expecting it to turn back on again but nothing happened, do you perhaps know how to make the edt8 work again, i can't find the anwer on Google or anywhere else, many thanks in advance......Arnaud , the Netherlands
***** I bought it on Ebay at a Stihl dealer in Germany, might be difficult to get a replacement, i'll send him an email anyway. I got the idle rpm adjusted in time before it switched off and that was actually the main reason for buying the tach......many thanks for your quick response, it's much appreciated and i'll be checking your videos now and then.....
induction tachs will work on any gasoline engine. They sense the spark plug electro magnetic field. The will not work on diesel engines (no spark plug)
They don't make these anymore. No demand for them. Find one that shuts off and you can replace batteries ( hardly any). The best one nowadays is the fast tach or tiny tach. The wired induction that you attach to the ignition cable is by far the best and more accurate. American made and has an hour meter. Good quality. You pay a bit more for it but wired is the best way to go.
I have only ones I had problems with are the newer Stihl MS+ saws. The ones from the 90's will last forever as long as you use non ethanol gas and run them dry before storage.
L screw is the gasoline and H screw is the air .When you set H screw to high the mixture is too lean. When you set the H screw too low the mixt is too reach .Hope this will help you
Wrong wrong wrong, why comment gilyan82 if you do not know? You may just comment and someone may damage their saw from your poor commenting. They are both fuel jets.

that's awesome that your deal turn screws for free. I took mine back to the dealer they had to adjust the mixture and they gave me I've $35 bill.
Thanks your video helped me a lot. I didn't know how to use the Tachometer until now.
Have been looking for the older EDT 7 because of it's simplicity. Now I see from your video that the EDT 8 is just as good. Thank you for the video.

You're welcome Matt. Thanks for commenting.

ill put a vid these days so you can see exactlly.Unfortunate will be in Romanian language but we can discuss on facebook
Can it be used as a tach on a two stroke boat engine?

Dose it do two cylinder engines like a v twin i wanna get one for my chainsaws weed eaters four wheelers and motorcycles
Just bought a Tach app for my iPhone and had it listen to the speaker. Was within 100 rpm of your readings.

Where would I find out the proper rpm targets for my particular chainsaw? Stihl MS 261
very nice thank you. regards
If you open the flap below 50 and close it above 70, what do you do when it's 51 to 69 degrees?
Don't use it ! Its time to drink a case of beer !!!
Stop with the negative waves Moriarty!! Always with the negative waves!! LOL!!

Thats the zone where it'll run good no matter how the shutter is set

Go for Rpm meter app for Android
Does this only work on stihl saws?

I can’t believe you marked up your saw with a note that could have been posted on anything other than the saw. Put the note on the lid of a tool box.

If there is no need for the wire, why do they put one on
In case of interference on multi cylinder motors you wrap the wire around one spark plug lead.
What made you buy a stihl?

You need practice on filling up a chainsaw A real lumberjack makes sure he spills a cup of gas every time he fills up. Just saying. 😜
