I’m glad you talked about the original story. Most people have no idea the ballet was based on a book first.

As someone who knew next to nothing about the Nutcracker I found this super interesting and accessible. Great job!

May I suggest the book called Raising the Barre by Lauren Kessler? It's about a woman who has loved the Nutcracker for years and finally gets the chance to dance it. Quite the interesting adventure!

My personal connection to the Nutcracker began with Fantasia and the gorgeous animation of the delicate and colorful Sugar Plum Fairies has inspired me for years. I see the ballet as an ultimately escapist work of art that opens a window into what I was dreaming about as a child, so I can at least understand why I and many others love it so much.

I’m very pleased to have found this video. Fantasia and the animated Keither Sutherland movie were my first exposure to the Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The music and iconography bewitched me as a child and even as an adult I still play the Tchaikovsky score every Christmas. I’ve never been into the ballet myself as I found it a bit boring but it was really cool to see a well researched and well interviewed piece on the stories history. Thumbs up from me.

Molly--I'm just re-watching because I'm putting your movie in my university C.V. and found myself admiring it again! You really cover a lot of the history and the popularity as a phenomenon, such an accomplishment. I did some media interviews in the COVID season, when Nutcrackers almost disappeared, but this year, I'm sure they'll come roaring back! Cheers, hope you're well, Jennifer Fisher

My personal favourite is the Royal Ballet version, with the ending of the Nutcracker being turned back into a human and reuniting with Drosselmeyer. It starts and ends in Drosselmeyer's workshop and has a nice rounded storytelling from his pov.
Also grew up dancing ballet and being in our local production of the Nutcracker, I've danced most parts except Klara and the Sugarplumfairy (wasn't good enough for that haha)

I was very little when I first heard the story of The Nutcracker. Late one cold December night, I sat out in the family room with my Mom, wrapped myself in a blanket, and listened to her read a number of Christmas stories to me, some which I remember well, some which I vaguely remember, and likely some that I've forgotten. One of these stories was the original The Nutcracker. I heard it before I knew the ballet even existed (but I had heard the music, but didn't know what it was from), and I absolutely loved the story. I thought it was such a lovely story, and I have re-read it almost every year since then. As you can imagine, I actually found the ballet pretty underwhelming, though I still love it (especially the music).

4:34. "The ending that she wakes up at the end, and it's all a dream -- I'm quite sure that that came from The Wizard of Oz." No, it was Bolshoi choreographer Alexander Gorsky who actually came up with that plot twist, for the 1919 revival of the ballet.

I was first introduced to The Nutcracker when my 4th grade teacher introduced it to my class. Her daughter was in a production, which she showed us a VHS tape of. It was a bit of a revelation. At that point, I thought ballet shows were dances without a narrative. What I got was like a silent film performed on stage.
Speaking of The Wizard of Oz, the original Nutcracker book seems like the kind of story L. Frank Baum would write.

Molly, I enjoyed watching your video about the Nutcracker history. In December 2019, watching the ballet on CZcams became my newer holiday season tradition. I more likely love the traditional ballet, like the 2017 one from Tampa, Fla., and the 1993 movie. Marie is my favorite character, but I didn't know she was also known as Clara. The classical songs are in my head, making me wanna sing ("la-la") to 'em. I need to watch the 2018 movie called "The Nutcracker & the Four Realms". I spotted the adult Clara in the trailer. I've heard of the Nutcracker dolls, but I wonder if there are the Clara dolls because I wish I could collect one of 'em. I came on over to your channel and watch this video about how the Nutcracker novel started and why it turned into a more modern ballet. I've heard of the metallic nutcrackers. If you have one of 'em, then you need to squeeze the handle to break some shells and have some nuts. Happy holidays! 🎄🎅🌨❄⛄🎊🎉

First off, The Pacific Northwest/Maurice Sendak version of the Nutcracker is my favorite version of the story.
Second, I wish Tim Burton or The Muppets did the Nutcracker.
There was also a 1973 Soviet Russian Nutcracker short cartoon.
Nutcracker The Motion Picture is my must watch holiday film.
