  • Frustrated because you watch perspective videos and understand them until you go to draw, and then have no idea how to connect what you've learnt with the scene you're drawing? The very good news is it's not your fault! Discover the reasons this happens over and over to so many people and regain your confidence to draw the architecture you enjoy so much.

    After reading 50 pages of a perspective book and watching a boat load of YT, I am so ready for this journey with you on perspective. I have learned a lot in only a few videos of yours. I can say even watching you draw a picture of gravel was not a waste of time! Thank you.

    This was really helpful because when I try to draw something I can’t figure out how to draw it since the vanishing point is way off the page and I can’t figure out how to draw something especially interior drawings because most tutorials are very right angled and parallel like you said

    Just found this video. I am someone who has struggled with perspective for ages, tried multiple times to learn it from different sources. None of them ever stick. I will try giving your videos a watch, as I feel like I related to a lot of what you said here. That said, the editing on this vid seems a bit choppy and fragmented. I can understand what you are saying, but its feels a bit sloppy which might put people off. Just figured I would mention that,

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Před rokem +2

      Thanks. Yes, I realise the editing can be a bit erratic, but I have a number of limiting factors, one of them being doing everything on my phone with a free app which is getting glitchy. I hope being a better artist and teacher than I am video presenter and editor will help. 😀

    Another great video Stephen! I saw someone criticized your editing of this video. I didn’t notice any of that because I’m interested in drawing, not editing videos. What I appreciate is all of the research, thought, and scripting you have done before you made this video. I know that you put many hours into it and CZcams pays you very little. Thank you so much for all your time and effort to help others. You are brilliant and kind. Thank you.

    There are two books I would recommend for those having trouble with perspective tutorials: Perspective for Comic Book Artists and its sequel: Extreme Perspective. While these books do intentionally invoke technical concepts from the world of architecture, it is done from the point of view of an artist who must use these ideas in a practical setting, to solve the real problems artists face. For example the first book does a great job of visualizing what the "horizon" line really is and how to imagine it in relation to perspective in an illustrated scene.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Před rokem +3

    Wow! I am watching all your videos and deeply appreciate the insight you share. This summer I will be living on a boat and plan on doing a lot of sketching at marinas. The problem is I have trouble drawing boats of all sizes. So after seeing this video, I brought a photo of our 33 ft boat into Photoshop and marked off rectangular sections with Photoshop’s rubber band tool. This resulted in a perspective framework I understood! I will be sketching lots of boats in the coming weeks so I get the hang of their shapes by summer. The task no longer seems impossible.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Před rokem +1

      Sounds great Karen. My big Instagram drawings are done with a 4x4 grid, It’s a great method. But if you want to draw freehand on locations over the summer, can I suggest you practice that as well. working with a grid can help us develop observation skills, which is great, but it’s still a jump to drawing whole objects freehand. My principle is to practice what you want to get better at. But also go with what you feel is working for you. All the best. Sounds a great experience. 😀

      In perspective videos, yes. But horizon is used differently in a more general way as well as where the land meets the sky, which makes it confusing for perspective purposes. 😀

    The vanishing points being waaaay off the page is something that drives me especially nuts. Like I do not have the space to perfectly measure points 3 feet from each side of my page, and I definitely can't apply it to my digital program!!!
