Can you imagine the strength of the manager to put up a brave face and defend the team and management in spite of the immense pressure he was juggling. That's exactly why ten hag is the right man for the job, atleast short term. Imagine Jose at this point, he would have ripped into everyone, the players medical, media, everyone! Same with conte or tuchel.. Ole was completely out of his depth by then. Ten Hag, on the other hand, had character enough to maintain discipline on how he himself conducted thru the situation. He might need to learn to adapt or else get replaced, but short term, I 100% back him for it

I remember at the start of the season when Varane and Casemiro were fit but not playing, people were saying ten Hag can't manage big players. But now reports are coming out that Varane and Casemiro were challenging his instructions. Here lies the problem, players who think they are too big to learn something new. They were great players and they were good for United to a point, but if you won't follow your manager's instruction, please feel free to walk out the door. And the worst part of it is that in front of the press, Ten Hag kept making himself look like a fool while defending these players. There is no greater disloyalty a player can show, that a manager backs you to the detriment of that manager's reputation, and the faith is never repaid.

Good on you guys for discussing this article and dispelling a ton of myths that Player FC have been using against Ten Hag.
One thing you missed though was Erik's rationale for not changing his system. In one interview a few months back (might have been with the Dutch newspaper), he explained that if he changed his system with so many players injured then the players who *have* been playing will need a new system coached into them, and then when the injured players return they will need to be coached to do the opposite again, while playing with returning players who have only known one system. In other words, you got half the current squad playing under one system and the returning players playing under a different one.
So I feel that context is important because it makes sense, ESPECIALLY when we now know that it wasn't player's who couldn't play the right system, they just didn't want to (Ronaldo, Sancho, Casemiro, Varane, and all the younger players they were influencing).

For many, its a way to get some dopamine hit and forget the hardships of their life. Its a real psychological effect of being dependent on external factors to drive your mood. There is no point arguing with them, because they'll never accept the grey areas of truly managing man utd. If you see some of those comments, its always highlighting the negatives, because that's what their brain is wired to focus on unless the team wins. That's why these people (mostly kids i presume) keep coming back to every public forum and saying the same things. Add to it, you got the media like sun and dailymirror who survive of crisis clickbaits that further fuel this chaos. Also rival fans pose as utd fans for a bit of fun, and that's the fuel for it. I swear I’ve been defending ten Hag all season. I told people over and over he said United couldn’t play his style of play.
SERIOUSLY: asking players to play basic tactical football in the midfield and having them not even attempt to do so is solely on THE PLAYERS.
Look, if everyone holds their lines, moves in tandem according to the given structure and where the ball is -- it takes LESS EFFORT to carry out a basic press. For people who do not get this, if you watch basketball it’s literally the same thing when a team press their opposition in their opposition’s half. It only takes one player to fail to position themselves correctly for the entire press to fall apart. And for United, that player was -- Casemiro.
This was an EFFORT issue, not. ten Hag issue.
AND: the claim about lack of flexibility is bs. Obviously ten Jags was flexible… ask Cristiano Ronaldo. Oh, WAIT! Don’t because he’ll lie through his teeth and say it didn’t happen.

Maguire, to me, comes across as the kind of player who listens to his manager and does what they ask. This backs up Laurie's claim that it was some of the defenders dropping too deep rather than the manager telling them to play deep. I'm looking at Varane and Lindelof mainly. It’s difficult to get a decent large number of this fanbase to understand. You will hear ‘it’s Ten Hags job to get control of these players’. It’s a valid point if this hasn’t already happened with 3/4 previous managers. There comes a point where you have to start putting the blame on the right people. For a very long time we haven’t been. And I would say it is probably the main issue as to why we have been so unsuccessful for so long.

The football philosophy of the likes of Ten Hag and Pep are similar where players are allowed to do 2 or 3 things on the pitch. This is means that players are never allowed to fully express themselves - unless they’re Messi of course. This is the case with most modern managers and in stark contrast to Real Madrid’s philosophy and Carlo Ancelotti in particular where players are encouraged to take more ownership on the tactics and own their position and make decisions before the game and during the game about how they should play there.
It’s easier for players to play for Pep / Eth as they’re told exactly what to do and they just need to stick that, while playing for Ancelotti requires higher footballing IQ from players and decision making skills. Players like
Ronaldo NEEDED his coaches to trust his football IQ and involve him in the tactics formulation which would never happen under Ten Hag and that’s why their relationship was doomed from the beginning.

Sancho didn't want to play on the right but played as a false 9? Meanwhile Rashford was asked to play center forward and move a bit to the right, he threw his tools down and went to party and yet he starts every game and plays shit in all?? There is no sense here

As always, thx guys for wonderfully honest content! Pls ponder this list of players......Pogba, Sancho, Antony, Ronaldo, Martial, Greenwood, Rashford, Shaw, Lukaku, Eriksen, Lingard, Varane, Casemiro, etc etc etc. How can players be termed Top Professionals or World Class if they lack Commitment to give sincere effort for the team and teammates, refuse to work within unfavored formations deemed beneficial for the team, fail to find the character necessary to graft out success, fail to understand that successful group endeavors require de-emphasis on personal brands, etc etc etc. We remark for years with shocked surprise that "at the moment" the attitudes and behaviors of the players is "shocking", yet the consistently displayed attitudes and behaviors of the players could be described as Self-consumed or Narcissistic? All these players...and others unnamed....must be ACCOMODATED by others, regarding field positioning and effort. How can players be World Class if they require special accomodation ? I left Fernandes off the list so i could address him here......hmmm, imagine being a midfielder required to "play with Bruno". Imagine that. Wandering around without Positional Responsibility, leaving massive holes in a midfield that has been overrun a thousand times, often unavailable as a source of potential distribution unless the distributor might be named Scholes or Pirlo. Lolol. When Bruno is playing above the #9, I would choose to kick the ball over the touchline and berate him publicly. This team of Overpraised, Overpaid, Overaccomodated Prats is not just unsuccessful but they are unlikeable, showing zero of the effort and graft that the United Fanbase put in every day of their lives. But we idolize these adolescents, demanding nothing....ultimately meaning that we will be disappointed as we Hope for everything. Surprise!....wasnt it obvious to anyone ever witnessing successful or unsuccessful families or workplaces, etc...that Ralf Rangnick was 100% correct? Open Heart Surgery!!

Sorry to add more but pls consider this unattactive idea.....that YOU play, as I do, on a self-respecting Over-50 Mens league team, and that the minimum requirements are Effort, Communication, Cooperation. Roll those together and it comprises Responsibility in service of team goals. None of us are Professionals paid quite highly by a team which can expect a professional commitment in return for a massive paycheck. Yet, those responsibilities are universally emitted by every player. No Coercive Elicitation is ever required. Win or lost, the team is fully satisfied with our internal state. Ronaldo condescendingly rolling his eyes at a physical miscue or pouting at players not doing his work for him? Pogba deliberately displaying a lack of concern, in hopes that someone may become concerned about His Internal Happiness? lolol. This group of Prats would find hard consequences, and certainly prior to halftime. Wake up, United Fans.....the lack of commitment and effort are not anomalies.....these have become Club Standards. Out With The Children!

Myself and others were saying theres no way the manager isn’t telling them to do things differently and if we can see at large points in the season that the players were not doing simple things like attacking 50/50 balls and second chance balls and closing down passing lanes and if they aren’t doing the simple things that everyone who has played at any competitive level knows to do and still gets told to do then they certainly aren’t doing other things they are being told that are harder or higher level things either.

The purchase of Ronaldo was a mistake that derailed all the progress that had been made by OGS in starting to build an exciting young squad that was feared by all the big teams and played very exciting football.

A tactician needs more young players with less ego than some of the experienced players like Ronaldo. That way he can mold players into his plan. He is looking to build and army. It needs to have decipline and ability to adjust. More importantly, needs players to fit the roles and not the other way.

the truth is from here in Uganda we dont rate English football thinkers highly.. we saw what he (Ten Hag)was all about but the English especially Jimmy and many of those stupid pundits preffer to put all there lack of knowledge and impartiality.
the truth is when he changes to dit the players he is blamed when he is trying his style they still blame him.
England will never be anything greater than their clubs even this English club will tank untill England changes

Having read the Athletic article it is clear Ten Hag has been a terrible man manager since day 1.
Wanting to change the way one of the best footballers ever, Ronaldo played, after he had just scored 18 goals in an awful United team/season was foolish.
Wanting to change the way big money signings, Varane and Casemiro played was equally foolish.
This is NOT player power, after all Cantona got away with so much more because of what he could do on the pitch. Ronaldo, Varane, Caemiro, that is an important part of the starting XI.
His bad man management is highlighted by how he handled Sancho.
Ten Hag chose Antony over Gapko, it seems, because United could not afford them both, same as they could not afford Kane, however could they? Keep De Gea, do not sign Mount or Onana and there is the money for Kane and his wages
It is annoying to read that Internally it was agreed that signing Hojlund meant United adjusted their expectations for last season
The Athletic article should be read as a lesson by Ten Hag.
Ten Haag clearly has struggled with man management, he has big name stars to handle, he never had that at Ajax
He changed his process before the cup final, but,
with some of the best ever man managers on his door step, Alex Ferguson, Jim Ratcliffe and Dave Brailsford, Ten Hag would be wise to seek their advice and learn from his mistakes.
No one can disagree with Brailsford when, the Athletic says, he feels athletes should be excited at getting to their place of work, that is the same in every place of employment.

But why did ten Hag allow this to happen ALL season!?
And please don’t give me injuries as an excuse. We lost FOUR of our opening SIX games with virtually a full strength team/ squad!
It happened in the very first game at home to Wolves and nothing changed thereafter!
Where was ten Hag’s coaching skills then!
He coached us once, THE CUP FINAL!
    Nuff said!
