  • My name is Richard Birchett and I'm an Award winning Wildlife & Nature Photographer, in this video my aim is to provide you with an in-depth look at the photo gear and equipment I take into the field with me to capture my wildlife images. Join me for my first Wildlife Photography How-To and get a look at my must have gear and some recommendations along the way.
    My Error: I picked up the 70-200 and said it was the 100-400, bit late to go back but wasn't an issue as I did a review on these side by side. And they look quite similar at first glance, the different lens hoods a giveaway. Thanks

      Hi Joe, thanks for your comment, seems like a lot but most is quite old, but still good glass 👍. And it’s taken me 16 years to put together.

    Thanks for the video. I have my 600mm for birds. I was trying to find a good zoom mostly for landscapes, so I bought the 70-300mm L lens. I think in retrospect I should have bought the 100-400mm version 2. Do you use the zoom a lot for birds? I’m debating selling the smaller zoom to get the 100-400 to cover more grounds

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 4 lety

      Hi Gary, my pleasure I hope some of it was useful to you. I love the 600mm as you probably guessed already and it's amazing for birds. Yes, I love the 100-400 Mk 2 for Birds and Mammals if I need to travel light, and when I'm out trekking it's my go to Lens, the newer version is sharper and the IS is a vast improvement over the Mk 1, which sometimes I found a little soft. Not sure what body you are using but if its a cropped sensor you can get that additional reach if needed. This is all based on my own findings but I have found many others who agree. ( 100-400 is also quite usable with the 1.4 Ext) The 70-200 F2.8 Ver 2 is great for Landscapes also:-) Not sure if you've subscribed if so thanks very much, if not I hope you might in the future as I'm going to do a sole review on the 100-400 Mk 2 with a detailed comparison. Kind regards Richard

      Richard Birchett thanks!! I’m actually using a 1d mark IV and it is still working well, but showing its age. I know the 1Dx Mark II would make a great combo with my 600mm II. I just need to budget for it and pick it up one day, perhaps used. I am just really weary of used camera bodies, more so than lenses which usually hold up well. As far as the 600mm, it’s awesome, but there are many times, where if I had the 100-400 zoom, I would be able to get a squirrel on a tree or quick moving small bird. By the time I swing my gimbal around it’s too late. I have a nice 400mm f 5.6 (my first serious bird lens), but not as useful because it lacks IS. I suppose the 70-300 still makes a great landscape lens, so I could always just sell the 400mm f 5.6 now that the version 2 of the zoom is about equal in optical quality to that lens, and get that.

    Just bought myself the 300 2.8 mk1 and will also look at buying 1.4x extender, is your extender the mk2 or 3 version?

    Hi richard just need your advise that i need only 1 lens for wildlife after 70-200 which i own with 5d mark iii which would be..?

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 4 lety +1

      Singh. H great to hear from you, and thanks for subscribing and contacting me. Personally I would go for the Canon 100-400 F4.5/5.6 L IS MK 1 or 2, the Mk 2 is the preferred choice but both great lenses. Great all rounder and has a great focal range and can be used in most Wildlife photographic situations. Tamron & Sigma do some great lenses at a reduced price but personally I’m Canon all the way. If you need anything else, please contact me. Regards Richard.

      @@RichardBirchett thank you very much for your reply and advise. Then length and size of sigma and tamron are too much, i also like canon for size and portability.

      They are indeed:-) Canon all the way! But for some and the budget they are a good option and pretty good glass! 👍

    Sorry, another question. I have the Lee 100 system also. I currently have the polarizer and some ND filters. Do you find the medium is better than the hard or soft filters? I currently have the big and little stoppers, a 2 stop soft and 3 stop hard. Do you have any suggestions of what filters I should add for landscapes? Thanks.

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 4 lety

      No problem Gary. When it comes to Landscape Photography I'm still learning myself so I'm not the best to ask. Although I use the .3 .6 .9 Medium as recommended to me by a good landscape chap, as a starter outfit, also with a Polarizer and a big stopper which is a 10 stop. I aim to do much more Landscape this year. Sorry I can't be of any more help, loads of good photographers on youtube who could help you further, Nigel Danson being one really good one. Richard

    • @MrGflan
      @MrGflan Před 4 lety

      Richard Birchett thanks. I have a bit of experience doing landscapes and the Lee system does work great. You just need to be sure to set your white balance on the warmer side because lee tends to give blue color cast. This is a good idea so that you can see your images come alive in the field. Yes, of course in Raw you can change that, but it helps you visualize things in real time. I follow a lot to Thomas Heaton landscape work and he is amazing. We are all learning here! I was just wondering your experiences with the mediums. I find the hard filters to be too dramatic in most cases, which require you to brighten too much later, like id you have jagged mountains. If it’s a wheat field or ocean with an even horizon, hard filters work awesome. I think I’ll pick up a medium or soft 3 stop. Still deciding.

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 4 lety

      Gary Michael Flanagan indeed I have heard the same from many and know what you mean regarding the WB settings. I steered away from the Hard filters due to the same reasons as you and have borrowed a friends before so decided to stick with the mediums as they are good for most situations I need. Mediums always a good bet:-) Nice to year your thoughts, all the best and best of luck. Regards Richard.
